Statement by the Prime Minister on Rosh Hashanah

October 2, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Rosh Hashanah:

“Tonight, at sunset, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

“The first of the High Holidays, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the 10 ‘Days of Awe’. Jewish communities will reflect on past challenges and hope for a better future. Families and friends gather to pray, share traditional meals, eat apples and honey, and listen to the sound of the shofar.

“Jewish Canadians have played an incredibly important role throughout Canada’s history. On Rosh Hashanah, we take the opportunity to recognize the immeasurable contributions of Jewish Canadians and their leadership in helping us build a more prosperous country.

“This Rosh Hashanah will be the first since last year’s horrific terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, which continues to impact Jewish communities around the world. We mourn and remember the lives lost during this heinous act of terror, including the Canadians murdered. We stand with the survivors and support Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law. We unequivocally condemn Hamas – a brutal terrorist organization – and we demand the immediate release of the remaining hostages.

“Canada is also committed to holding the Iranian regime accountable for its actions, including yesterday’s large-scale missile attack. This attack is yet another destabilizing action by the regime and should not – and cannot – be tolerated by the international community. Canada unequivocally condemns this reckless attack targeting innocent civilians, and we fully support Israel’s right to defend itself against this and any other attack from Iran. We once again call for de-escalation across the region.

“The disgusting increase in antisemitism across Canada must stop. The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Jewish communities and to building a country where everyone feels safe to practise their culture and faith. Whether it’s at a synagogue or a Jewish-owned business or school; whether it’s wearing the Star of David or a Kippah – Jewish Canadians have the right to live proudly and openly Jewish lives, without intimidation or fear.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah a healthy, peaceful, and prosperous New Year.

“Shana Tova U’metuka!”

Statement by the Prime Minister welcoming the new Prime Minister of Japan

October 1, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to welcome the new Prime Minister of Japan, Ishiba Shigeru:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Ishiba Shigeru on becoming Prime Minister of Japan.

“Canada and Japan’s relationship is rooted in shared values and deep economic and cultural ties. As strong allies on the world stage, we work together as part of the G7, the G20, the United Nations, and as dialogue partners of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

“As friends and partners, we are moving forward on shared priorities under the Canada-Japan Action Plan, including by supporting humanitarian efforts, promoting free trade, defending peace and security, and fighting climate change. Canada remains committed to building on this partnership through our Indo-Pacific Strategy, which benefits people on both sides of the Pacific with greater progress, prosperity, and opportunity.

“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Ishiba as our countries deepen our friendship. Together, Canada and Japan will defend democracy around the world, grow our economies, and make life better for Canadians and Japanese people alike.

“I thank former Prime Minister Kishida Fumio for his partnership and friendship over the past years. We got a lot done together and the relationship between Canada and Japan is stronger because of it. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on National Seniors Day

October 1, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on National Seniors Day:

“Seniors built this country. As leaders in local communities. As trailblazers in sport and science. As role models for younger generations. They embody Canada’s promise, potential, and prosperity. And our government is making sure they can age with dignity.

“We increased Old Age Security payments for seniors when they turn 75. We raised the Guaranteed Income Supplement by up to $947 annually for single, low-income seniors. We enhanced the Canada Pension Plan.

“We are investing close to $200 billion to improve health care across the country, which includes expanding access to primary care, long-term care, home care, and family help services. We introduced legislation that will make insulin and other diabetes medications completely free. And because of our Canadian Dental Care Plan, three quarters of a million Canadians, including seniors, have got the dental care they need.

“There’s so much more to do. We need to keep expanding dental care. We need to pass pharmacare. We need to protect pensions.

“Seniors have been fighting to make Canada better for decades. They took out loans to create the family-owned businesses that still thrive today. They worked multiple jobs so their kids could get the best start in life. They answered the call to serve and defend the freedoms we enjoy today. They struggled and succeeded – but never stopped believing in Canada’s potential. That’s the legacy we stand on and that’s why we give back to support seniors.

“On National Seniors Day, we recommit to helping them age in good health and with dignity – because a fairer future for every generation includes seniors.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Women’s History Month

October 1, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Women’s History Month:

“From one generation to the next, women have made Canada what it is today – often without the recognition they deserve. Each year, during Women’s History Month, we honour their resilience, celebrate their progress, and work to make Canada fairer for everyone.

“This year’s theme, ‘Women at Work: Economic Growth, Past, Present, and Future’, highlights the important work of women to build a more prosperous Canada. Whether it’s as local business owners, startup founders, policy experts, tradeswomen, corporate CEOs, health care workers, or researchers, women from all backgrounds across our country are leaders and innovators who create opportunities for others and a better future for everyone.

“Despite the progress, women still face inequalities and injustices today. With the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, the federal government is breaking barriers and helping women entrepreneurs start up, scale up, and succeed. With our Canada-wide $10-a-day early learning and child care system, we are helping parents build their careers while giving their kids the best start in life. Because of this program, we are seeing record-high levels of women’s participation in the workforce. And through initiatives such as our Equi’Vision tool, we are encouraging Canadian businesses to address pay gaps and underrepresentation in workplaces. Our message is clear – when women succeed, our economy succeeds, and Canada succeeds.

“We’re also taking action to expand sexual and reproductive health care across the country. With the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund, we are removing barriers, increasing access to these critical services, and supporting community organizations across Canada to help deliver care.

“We are addressing inequities through the first National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, as well as programs and initiatives that provide funding to support Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQI+ people, and other marginalized groups. We are also accelerating our efforts through the Federal Pathway to address the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people. And beyond our borders, Canada remains an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights through our Feminist International Assistance Policy.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage Canadians to celebrate the women who have shaped Canada into the thriving, diverse, and prosperous country we call home today.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on the appointment of Mark Rutte as the new NATO Secretary General

October 1, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the appointment of Mark Rutte as the new NATO Secretary General:

“A cornerstone of transatlantic security for 75 years, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) upholds democracy, peace, security, and the rules-based international order. As a founding member, Canada has been part of almost every NATO mission.

“Today, as the Alliance stands more united than ever, I congratulate Mark Rutte on his appointment as the new NATO Secretary General. His extensive experience and leadership on the international stage will be an asset to the Alliance as we work to preserve peace and prosperity around the world.

“In response to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, NATO Allies have come together for the greatest collective defence effort in a generation to promote security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. Canada is committed to building on this critical work, including with our leadership of the NATO Battlegroup in Latvia.

“As Russia continues its war of aggression and the world faces new security threats, NATO remains resolute. I look forward to working with Secretary General Rutte to uphold Euro-Atlantic security, deepen Canada’s role within NATO, and bring the Alliance even closer.

“I thank former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for his leadership and partnership with Canada over the past 10 years. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

October 3, 2024

“For those celebrating, the next nine nights will see families and friends come together with prayer, music, and to spend time with loved ones.

“Hindu Canadians are an integral part of Canada. Their festivals and celebrations, like Navratri, are also our festivals. The joy, celebration, and diversity that Hindu Canadians exemplify, makes us stronger as a country.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my warmest wishes of happiness and prosperity to all those celebrating Navratri.”

G7 Leaders’ Statement on recent developments in the Middle East

October 3, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

We, the Leaders of the G7, express deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and condemn in the strongest terms Iran’s direct military attack against Israel, which constitutes a serious threat to regional stability.

We unequivocally reiterate our commitment to the security of Israel. Iran’s seriously destabilizing actions throughout the Middle East through terrorist proxies and armed groups—including the Houthis, Hezbollah, and Hamas—as well as Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq, must stop. Yesterday we discussed coordinated efforts and actions to avoid escalation in the area.

A dangerous cycle of attacks and retaliation risks fuelling uncontrollable escalation in the Middle East, which is in no one’s interest. Therefore, we call on all regional players to act responsibly and with restraint. We encourage all parties to engage constructively to de-escalate the current tensions. International humanitarian law must be respected.

On the eve of the tragic anniversary of Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023, we condemn once again in the strongest possible terms such unjustified acts of deliberate violence and stand with the families of the victims and the hostages taken by Hamas.

We also reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of all hostages, a significant and sustained increase in the flow of humanitarian assistance, and an end to the conflict. We fully endorse the efforts by the US, Qatar and Egypt to reach such a comprehensive deal, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735. The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and tens of thousands of innocent lives have been lost. We reiterate the absolute need for the civilian population to be protected and that there must be full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access, as a matter of absolute priority. We will continue working to set the conditions for a durable peace, leading to a two States solution, where Israel and Palestine coexist side-by-side in peace, with security for both.

We are also deeply concerned about the situation in Lebanon. We recall the need for a cessation of hostilities as soon as possible to create space for a diplomatic solution along the Blue Line, consistent with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. This is the only path to durably de-escalate tensions, stabilize the Israel-Lebanon border, fully restore the sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability of Lebanon, and return displaced citizens to their homes with safety and security on both sides. We urge all actors to protect civilian populations. We are committed to providing humanitarian assistance to address the urgent needs of civilians in Lebanon.

We also express our deep condolences to the families of the civilian victims in Israel, Gaza and Lebanon.

We underscore the importance of the United Nations in resolving armed conflict and mitigating the humanitarian impact in the Middle East. In this regard, we acknowledge the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to restore peace and security. We are committed to reinforce our support to the mission, pursuant to applicable UN resolutions.

We will continue to be in close contact with all actors to this end.

Statement by the Prime Minister on World Teachers’ Day

October 5, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Teachers’ Day:

“Teachers are the best. They help us learn and grow. They encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. They pick us up when we fall. And they’re our guides and mentors when we need that extra push to succeed.

“We all have a favourite teacher. The one who comforted us when we didn’t feel confident. The one who, despite being asked a thousand questions, would happily answer all of them. The one who made learning fun.

“This year’s theme – ‘Valuing teachers’ voices: towards a new social contract for education’ – highlights the critical role of educators in supporting and shaping our future. Whether it’s in the classroom or in extracurricular programs, as early childhood educators or counsellors, or as coaches or mentors, teachers build the foundations to help every generation reach its full potential.

“With the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, Teaching Excellence in STEM, and Excellence in Early Childhood Education, we thank the outstanding educators across the country for their dedication to their students and communities. Today, I am pleased to launch the call for nominations for the 2025 awards. I invite Canadians to nominate an outstanding educator from their community who has made a real difference in their life, or in the life of one of their children.

“The federal government is making sure teachers and students have what they need to succeed. With programs like CanCode, we are providing professional development opportunities for 100,000 teachers. This will help over nine million students gain skills in areas such as coding and artificial intelligence over the next two years. With our new National School Food Program, we will get healthy meals for up to 400,000 more kids in school – because teachers know that students learn better on a full stomach.

“Beyond our borders, initiatives such as the Global Partnership for Education and the Simameni project are increasing access to quality education, particularly in low-income and crisis-affected countries. And as part of our work toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Canada is playing its part in making learning more inclusive for young students, no matter where they come from.

“Some of my best memories are from my time as a teacher. I was proud to be a teacher. And I know the hard work and sacrifice that the thousands of teachers across the country put in every single day.

“So, on behalf of the Government of Canada – thank you. For the late nights marking papers. For the weekends spent creating course materials so your students are engaged. For the moments where you feel like a parent, guardian, mentor, guide, and coach – all at once. For the often-unsung contributions you make to help others succeed.

“Today, on World Teachers’ Day, and every day, let’s show our gratitude and give thanks to our teachers and educators. They make the world better and more prosperous.”

Prime Minister strengthens our ties with Francophone countries at the Sommet de la Francophonie

October 5, 2024
Paris, France

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today concluded his participation at the 19th Sommet de la Francophonie in Villers-Cotterêts and Paris, France. This visit was an opportunity for him to promote the French language, strengthen Canada’s relations with other member states and governments of La Francophonie, and advance our shared values, including peace, democracy, human rights, and inclusion.

At the Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau underlined Canada’s commitment to promoting development, security, and inclusion in Francophone Africa. He announced more than $11 million to support initiatives that focus on improved access to education, the empowerment of women and girls, youth nutrition and health, and the safety and security of communities, while strengthening our relations with French-speaking countries in Africa.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting governance modernization at the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) so it can fulfill its mandate transparently and as effectively as possible, especially with respect to promoting our shared values and the French language. He noted the work underway to map and identify workforce needs for the teaching of French and instruction in French. Prime Minister Trudeau also reiterated Canada’s support for La Francophonie’s operators and institutions by announcing a federal investment of nearly $1.6 million. This funding will support scientific research in French as well as student mobility and youth employability, while helping expand the diversity of French-language content on the TV5MONDEplus platform. It will also support research on promoting the French language and Francophone identities in cities across La Francophonie and foster the participation of women in parliaments in the Francophone world.

In the Villers-Cotterêts Call, Canada and the other OIF member states and governments invited digital platforms to strengthen their commitments to create a safer and fairer digital space. They also agreed on the importance of promoting the responsible use and development of artificial intelligence and countering disinformation. To support this goal, Prime Minister Trudeau underscored the importance of continuing to build strong relationships with our partners in La Francophonie to create a safer and more prosperous future for our peoples.

As a founding member of the OIF and its second-largest donor, Canada is firmly committed to supporting the OIF’s mandate and initiatives, in particular to protect and promote the French language as well as cultural and linguistic diversity. To that end, Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Cité internationale de la langue française, which seeks to promote the richness and diversity of the French language and its role in the world. By supporting this project, Canada is highlighting the importance of its Francophone minority communities, deepening exchanges between Francophones in Canada and abroad, and showcasing the diversity of the Canadian Francophonie to Cité visitors.

Building on the progress made during President Macron’s visit to Canada last month, Prime Minister Trudeau also reiterated his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Canada and France.

At the Summit, the Prime Minister met with international counterparts to discuss current geopolitical challenges with wide-ranging impacts, including in the Francophone world, especially the situation in Haiti, as well as tensions in the Middle East and along Lebanon’s southern border. He emphasized the importance of working together, as OIF partners, to preserve peace and security in the world.

Quote

“During the Sommet de la Francophonie, I renewed Canada’s commitment to promoting and protecting the French language. In collaboration with the OIF and the other member states and governments, we can create new opportunities for Francophone people around the world.”

— The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Prime Minister to participate in ASEAN Summit and the 25th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group

October 6, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that he will participate in the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, and the 25th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at the U.S. air base in Ramstein, Germany.

For almost half a century, Canada and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have been partners in promoting peace, prosperity, and progress. As we create good-paying jobs, fight climate change, and grow our economies, Canada and ASEAN stand united to make life better for people in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

At the Summit, from October 10 to 11, 2024, Prime Minister Trudeau will highlight Canada and ASEAN’s long-standing commitment toward building a fairer, more prosperous future for people on both sides of the Pacific. As work toward a Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement continues, the Prime Minister will note progress on last year’s ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership and underscore the importance of sustainable long-term growth that works for everyone, empowers women and girls, and is anchored in the clean energy transition.

ASEAN is one of the world’s fastest growing economic regions. That’s why Canada is increasing trade and investment with ASEAN and putting Canadians at the forefront of this immense opportunity. As a group, ASEAN member states represented Canada’s fourth largest merchandise trading partner in 2023, with increased progress in agriculture, agrifood, and digital trade between our peoples. Greater trade and investment mean more jobs, more innovation, and more growth.

Building on Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy, Prime Minister Trudeau will also meet with ASEAN partners at the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit to enhance collaboration so we can effectively support prosperity and stability throughout the region. He will emphasize Canada’s constructive role in addressing new and emerging challenges to peace and security, including malicious cyber activity and threats from cybercrime.

This visit will mark the first official visit of a Canadian Prime Minister to Laos. As Canada and Laos celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations this year, Prime Minister Trudeau will work to advance shared interests and forge even stronger ties between our two countries.

The Prime Minister will then participate in the 25th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at the U.S. air base in Ramstein, Germany, on October 12, 2024.

Hosted by the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, leaders from the international community will reaffirm global solidarity with Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s unjustifiable war of aggression. Building on the progress made at the NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., United States of America, earlier this year, Prime Minister Trudeau will emphasize the importance of sustained international support for Ukraine and a just and lasting peace for Ukrainians.

The Prime Minister will highlight the importance of addressing Ukraine’s immediate defence and security needs, including the provision of military equipment, security assistance and training, and economic support. He will also highlight Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s long-term security, as evidenced by the Agreement on security cooperation between Canada and Ukraine, which was concluded earlier this year.

Canada will continue to work closely with its international partners to support Ukraine and Ukrainians as they continue to fight for their freedom, independence, and democracy.

Quote

“Shared challenges require shared solutions – that’s what the ASEAN Summit and the Ukraine Defense Contact Group are all about. Whether it’s fighting climate change, creating good-paying jobs, or strengthening democracy, Canada is playing a leadership role in creating a better, safer, and fairer future for people across the world.”

— The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
