PRESS RELEASE 27 November 2025 Ioannis Liapakis from Crete European Region of Gastronomy 2026 was awarded European Young Chef for 2025 on 27 November. With the dish Erevinthos, Ioannis impressed the international jury, chaired by Xavier Pellicer - a leading figure in plant-based fine dining, from Catalonia, World Region of Gastronomy awarded 2025.

PRESS RELEASE Nordland recommended for the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2028 14 November 2025

An international jury comprising of four international experts, accompanied by IGCAT’s President, Diane Dodd PhD considered the application of Nordland region for the title European Region of Gastronomy 2028. After reviewing the bid book: Nordland: Seasons Under The Light, submitted on 17 April 2025, the jury visited the region from 10-14 November 2025. The aim of the visit was to assess the region’s appropriateness and readiness to host the title in 2028.The jury will prepare a comprehensive report with recommendations to support the region’s journey.

PRESS RELEASE Celebrating Food Stories Across the Globe Food Film Menu 2025 27 October 2025 The Food Film Menu 2025 winners were officially announced at an inspiring Award Ceremony held in Gozo, Malta, on 27 October 2025, hosted by Gozo, European Region of Gastronomy 2026. The event gathered representatives from the Regions of Gastronomy, filmmakers, local and international experts at Ta’ Frenc Restaurant to celebrate the power of food, culture, and film in connecting communities. The ceremony was accompanied by a program of gastronomic and cultural experiences organised by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning. Participants enjoyed a rich cultural itinerary, including a visit to the Cittadella Visitors’ Centre, wine tasting at Tal-Massar Winery, and an excursion to Ta’ Pinu Basilica, DwejraInl and Sea, and the Xwejni Salt pans, showcasing Gozo’s deep connection between land, heritage, and cuisine.

As Vice-President of IGCAT, I feel privileged to have witnessed and supported our organisation’s and our community’s evolution for over a decade. This year we celebrate ten years of the European Regions of Gastronomy, the World Regions of Gastronomy established as a global movement, and more than a decade since the Mediterranean Diet was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. From the very beginning, IGCAT was right to insist that culture is a key element when talking about food and gastronomy.

The term regenerative has emerged as a powerful global benchmark, an aspirational standard that forward-thinking stewards of our planet are striving to understand, embody, and weave into their lives, work, and worldview. From chef to farmer, the connection completes the circle - a non-extractive cycle of giving, receiving, and restoring. Though I wasn’t consciously aware of it in my youth, the values of a regenerative life were instinctively woven into my upbringing, nurtured by the spirit of the Northern Rivers in Australia.

Imagine a region of lush volcanic landscapes, where mountains meet the sea, giving rise to nutrient-rich soils, pristine rivers, and thriving ecosystems filled with diverse flora and fauna - all living in harmony. This is my home. The Northern Rivers, at Australia's most easterly point, meets the Pacific Ocean and welcomes millions of travellers each year. Our community works diligently to preserve this natural beauty through shared values and mindful choices, embracing a regenerative connection between agriculture, gastronomy, and agritourism.

PRESS RELEASE IGCAT’s 2025 World Food Gift Challenge Awards 12 Outstanding Products in Sicily 9 May 2025 In celebration of food heritage and cultural identity, IGCAT’s 6th World Food Gift Challenge recognised 12 exceptional food and food-related craft products, selected by an international jury of experts. Hosted by Sicily, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2025, the competition brought international recognition to artisanal producers whose unique gifts represent the culinary and cultural richness of their territories. Held in the historic city of Catania, the World Food Gift Challenge 2025 took place on 9 May at the magnificent Palazzo Biscari. The competition gathered 34 food and craft gifts from acclaimed Regions of Gastronomy, including: Aseer World Region of Gastronomy 2024; Catalonia World Region of Gastronomy 2025; Manabí World Region of Gastronomy 2026; Menorca European Region of Gastronomy 2022; Trondheim-Trøndelag European Region of Gastronomy 2022; Saimaa European Region of Gastronomy 2024; Sicily European Region of Gastronomy 2025; Gozo European Region of Gastronomy 2026; Kvarner European Region of Gastronomy 2026; Crete European Region of Gastronomy 2026; Harghita European Region of Gastronomy 2027; and Dobrogea candidate European Region of Gastronomy 2029.

PRESS RELEASE 25 March 2025 Do you have a compelling food story to tell? IGCAT (International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts, and Tourism) invites filmmakers from around the world to submit their short films for the Food Film Menu 2025, an international competition celebrating the rich diversity of food cultures, traditions, and regional gastronomic heritage. Each year, the Food Film Menu showcases up to 14 outstanding winning short films that capture the deep connections between food, heritage, and local identity. These films serve as a powerful medium to highlight the importance of preserving food traditions, promoting sustainability, and fostering a greater appreciation of regional gastronomy. Submissions are open to all filmmakers, from professionals to enthusiasts, who can creatively convey the stories of food producers, culinary traditions, sustainable practices, and the cultural significance of food. The selected films will receive international recognition and will be promoted across IGCAT’s website, social media channels, and global partner networks, as well as featured in international film festivals. Unveiled at a gala event held on 6 February in Miercurea Ciuc, hosted by Harghita, European Region of Gastronomy Awarded 2027, IGCAT’s Top 10 Websites for Foodie Travelers 2025 present a selection of exceptional, creative, and culturally rich gastronomic experiences from around the world. From food and wine tastings, farm or factory tours, cookery classes to craft-focused experiences, food and wine routes, markets, fairs, to museums dedicated to food heritage - just some of the exciting activities you’ll find on the awarded websites! All, striving to promote local gastronomy, support producers, and celebrate unique food cultures. Moderated by IGCAT Board Member, Jaume Gomila reported that “we believe that food is a gateway to understanding the soul of a place. Through these Awards, we recognize the outstanding websites that connect travelers with authentic, creative and sustainable culinary experiences while supporting micro-businesses and regional development. The Jury applauded all participating websites for their commitment to nurturing more meaningful relationships between locals and international visitors.” In the presence of international guests and local stakeholders attending Harghita's official Award Ceremony, the top 10 websites selected from global submissions were announced, providing a most tantalizing list. The jury, with their diverse perspectives and deep knowledge, noted that these websites stood apart for their exceptional values related to supporting circular economies and their creativity. IGCAT’s international jury and criteria The websites submitted to the 4th edition of the Top Websites for Foodie Travelers competition, were evaluated by an international jury of experts from IGCAT who assessed them according to a series of criteria such as usability, sustainability and creativity of the experiences offered, as well as their connection with the regions they promote. The jury included: Dr. Edith M. Szivas (Spain), Vice-President of IGCAT and expert in sustainable tourism; Orazio Bellettini (Ecuador), Social entrepreneur, Co-founder and Executive Director of FUEGOS; Mayada Badr (Saudi Arabia), CEO of the Culinary Arts Commission and one of the leading Saudi names specialized in Culinary Arts; Pepe Fassos (Australia), qualified Chef, certified organic farmer, owner of Five Sixty Farms, and founder of Fusion Agrifood; Ana Paula Sançana (Portugal), Technical responsible for the beekeeping in Lousamel Beekeepers Cooperative; and Bilel Aboudi (Tunisia), national coordinator for major international programmes (EU), Head of cultural industries’ development, international negotiator and Regional culture policy expert (Arab and North Africa regions). A Gala night to crown the winning websites! In a grand celebration held at the Hotel Fenyő in Miercurea Ciuc/Csíkszereda, the Top Websites for Foodie Travelers 2025 Award Ceremony took centre stage, bringing together international guests, local stakeholders, and tourism experts. Organized by IGCAT and Visit Harghita, the event was hosted as part of the award celebrations for Harghita, European Region of Gastronomy 2027. The Award Ceremony was moderated by Günther Ottó, Radio and Television Presenter, and counted with the presence of President of the Harghita County Council, Barna-Botond Bíró; General Consul of the Hungarian Consulate in Miercurea ciuc/Csíkszereda, László Percze (online) and Consultant in tourism marketing, Pascu Răzvan. Earlier in the day, participants embarked on an exciting snow-filled adventure to Harghita Băi, where they explored the stunning winter landscapes during a guided trip to the Pálos Monastery. This was followed by a delicious lunch at the Castor Restaurant, offering a delightful showcase of the region’s culinary traditions. The evening concluded with a festive dinner at Hotel Fenyő, hosted by Visit Harghita, where guests enjoyed Harghita’s warm hospitality and rich culinary offerings, proving just how valuable food-related visitor experiences are.
