Prime Minister welcomes fourth report from Canada-United States Council for Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to welcome the fourth report from the Canada-United States Council for Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders:

“Today, I welcome the fourth report from the Canada-United States Council for Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders, which focuses on increasing women’s access to capital.

“I thank the Council for their work to explore how we can improve access to capital, an issue identified in the Council’s last report as a key barrier facing women entrepreneurs. This report looks at concrete steps we can take – as capital providers, women entrepreneurs, and governments – to ensure that all entrepreneurs have access to the capital and financing they need to turn their ideas into successful businesses.

“We know that governments can promote economic growth that works for everyone by providing targeted support for women-owned and women-led businesses. The report highlights the $1.4 billion in new financing available for women entrepreneurs through the Business Development Bank of Canada and the capital available to increase women’s participation in traditionally male-dominated industries. We are also providing financing and insurance solutions for those looking to export to global markets, as well as new lending for women entrepreneurs in agriculture.

“In addition to these measures, Canada remains committed to improve the representation of women in leadership positions in venture capital firms. We also committed to increase the proportion of procurement for women-led businesses, and we are advancing gender equality in Canada’s boardrooms thanks to Bill C-25. These measures represent important steps toward making sure women entrepreneurs have access to the capital they need to grow thriving businesses.

“When women entrepreneurs succeed, all of us benefit – and it is vital that we work together to remove the barriers that limit the potential of women-led companies. We welcome these recommendations, and will continue our efforts to support women entrepreneurs and business leaders. Statement by the Prime Minister on violence in Gaza Strip

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the violence in the Gaza Strip:

“Canada deplores and is gravely concerned by the violence in the Gaza Strip that has led to a tragic loss of life and injured countless people. We are appalled that Dr. Tarek Loubani, a Canadian citizen, is among the wounded – along with so many unarmed people, including civilians, members of the media, first responders, and children.

“We are doing everything we can to assist Dr. Loubani and his family, and to determine how a Canadian citizen came to be injured. We are engaging with Israeli officials to get to the bottom of these events.

“Reported use of excessive force and live ammunition is inexcusable. It is imperative we establish the facts of what is happening in Gaza. Canada calls for an immediate independent investigation to thoroughly examine the facts on the ground – including any incitement, violence, and the excessive use of force.

“Canada stands ready to assist in such an endeavour. We will work closely with our international partners and through international institutions to address this serious situation.”

Ποιος Θυμάται το Ναυάγιο του Sea Diamond;



Την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα ολοκληρώθηκε στη Σαντορίνη ένας νέος κύκλος δειγματοληψιών από το Ινστιτούτο Θαλάσσιας Προστασίας «Αρχιπέλαγος» στην περιοχή του ναυαγίου του Sea Diamond. Στόχος είναι η εκτίμηση του βαθμού συσσώρευσης τοξικών ρύπων στα οικοσυστήματα της περιοχής. Η δειγματοληψία έγινε σε συνεργασία με τη «Συντονιστική Επιτροπή Αγώνα Θηραίων Πολιτών για την Ανέλκυση του Κ/Ζ Sea Diamond» και με το Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης (Σχολή Μηχανικών Περιβάλλοντος, Εργαστήριο Διαχείρισης Τοξικών και Επικίνδυνων Αποβλήτων).
Έχουν περάσει 11 χρόνια από τη βύθιση και εγκατάλειψη του ναυαγίου στο βυθό της Καλντέρας και εκτός από τα πετρελαιοειδή, εξακολουθείται η διαρροή τοξικών και επικίνδυνων ουσιών στα θαλάσσια οικοσυστήματα. Καθώς το κουφάρι του πλοίου διαβρώνεται, ο ρυθμός ρύπανσης αναμένεται να είναι ολοένα αυξανόμενος.





Η ανέλκυση του ναυαγίου, που αποτελεί καθιερωμένη προεκλογική υπόσχεση κάθε νέας κυβέρνησης προς τους κατοίκους του νησιού, γρήγορα ξεχνιέται, παρ’ όλο που αυτό έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως εγκαταλελειμμένο απόβλητο και παρά την καταδίκη των φυσικών προσώπων και της εταιρείας που προξένησε το ναυάγιο.
Το Ινστιτούτο Αρχιπέλαγος που βρέθηκε στην περιοχή αμέσως μετά τη βύθιση και έκτοτε παρακολουθεί στενά το ζήτημα, έχει εξ’ αρχής επισημάνει τον κίνδυνο της αναπόφευκτης τοξικής ρύπανσης σε περίπτωση μη-ανέλκυσης, ενώ εκπρόσωποι του Ινστιτούτου έχουν κληθεί να καταθέσουν ως μάρτυρες σε πολυάριθμες δίκες για το ζήτημα αυτό.




Το παράδοξο με την υπόθεση του Sea Diamond είναι ότι επί 11 χρόνια η πολιτεία δεν πράττει το αυτονόητο. Δεν εφαρμόζει το νόμο περί ανέλκυσης ναυαγίων που ορίζει την υποχρέωση της ασφαλούς απομάκρυνσης με έξοδα του πλοιοκτήτη και του ασφαλιστικού του οργανισμού. Επίσης παράδοξο είναι ότι χρειάστηκαν 9 χρόνια για να ολοκληρωθεί η δίκη για τις ποινικές ευθύνες του ναυαγίου του Sea Diamond, όπου και αποφασίστηκε τελεσίδικά η ενοχή του Πλοιάρχου και των πλοιοκτητών.

Ως μέτρο σύγκρισης για τη διαχείριση του ναυαγίου σε ένα ευνομούμενο κράτος, χαρακτηριστικό είναι το παράδειγμα του κρουαζιερόπλοιου Costa Concordia το 2012 στην Ιταλία. Στην περίπτωση αυτή, οι ιταλικές αρχές τηρώντας απαράκλητα όλους τους κανόνες αποφυγής πρόκλησης ρύπανσης, υποχρέωσαν την πλοιοκτήτρια εταιρεία να ανελκύσει το ναυάγιο μέσα σε 14 μήνες και να πληρώσει περισσότερο από 1 δις ευρώ έως και την ανακύκλωσή του σε ναυπηγείo της Γένοβα.

Η υπόθεση του Sea Diamond αποδεικνύει για άλλη μία φορά ότι η προάσπιση του δημόσιου συμφέροντος διαχρονικά δεν αποτελεί προτεραιότητα για την εκάστοτε πολιτική ηγεσία στην Ελλάδα. Άλλοτε προτεραιότητα παραμένει η προάσπιση συγκεκριμένων συμφερόντων, ενώ άλλοτε διαπιστώνουμε ότι οι αρμόδιοι, ανεξάρτητα πολιτικής απόχρωσης, δεν είναι σε θέση να αντιληφθούν, άρα ούτε και να διαχειριστούν, τα σοβαρά ζητήματα που σχετίζονται με το περιβάλλον και τη δημόσια υγεία.

Dmitry Medvedev speaks at the 8th St Petersburg International Legal Forum

The St Petersburg International Legal Forum was launched in 2011 and is a major platform for dialogue between politicians, lawyers, economists and researchers representing all the main economic and legal systems.

The forum seeks to promote ways to modernise the law in the changing global environment, including ways to optimise cooperation between legal systems and work out common approaches to developing law in today’s world, to modernise Russian law by using the best international practices for drafting and administering laws, and to assist in the development of modern legal sciences and legal education in Russia and throughout the world.

The forum’s agenda this year focuses on the latest developments in the legal world, changes in international and Russian law, as well as international cooperation. The theme of the plenary session is Future of the Legal Profession.

The award ceremony of the of the St Petersburg International Legal Forum Private Law Prize 2018 was held for the first time on the sidelines of the event.  This law prize, which has no analogues either in Russia or in the world, was established in 2017.

The award recognises the laureate’s high academic profile. The world’s top-ranking universities were given the right to propose candidates for the prize. Based on publicly available academic rankings, a list of leading law schools and R&D centres was drawn up and 82 deans of legal departments on five continents received invitations to nominate academic works. Among the criteria for awarding the prize was the international significance of the nominated work. The award’s expert council included world-class legal scholars who are trend setters in today’s legal research and whose works inspired several generations of legal experts.

The forum expands its audience every year, attracting more and more legal experts from across the world. Our forum is unique in that it brings together representatives from various sectors of the legal profession. This year, more than 4,000 people from 90 countries are attending the forum. Many are those watching live broadcasts online.

What are the main tasks that the legal professionals will have to face, whether they want to or not? Protecting individual rights is essential. This is an absolute priority for any legal system.

This vision is set out in the Russian Constitution, which marks its 25^thanniversary in 2018. This celebration coincides with another anniversary: 20 years ago, Russia ratified the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. These two instruments have become part of our legal system, our legislative and judicial practice, ultimately changing the lives of so many people.

Tomorrow a conference will open in Denmark where a declaration on the long-term vision for the European Convention is expected to be adopted. Together with 46 countries of the Council of Europe, Russia took an active part in drafting this instrument. We support it, as we support the subsidiary nature of the ECHR with respect to the legal systems of member states. We share the view that the European Court of Human Rights must take into consideration the general provisions of international public law.

The very purpose of law enforcement agencies and the state in general is to protect human rights to enhance legal protections in Russia. To this effect, the Ministry of Justice drafted a concept for regulating professional legal assistance. It includes, among other things, a proposal to compel all legal experts to abide by professional standards and assume responsibility for their actions.

«Η γενοκτονία των Ποντίων, δεν είναι µόνο θέμα ελληνικό, είναι Ευρωπαϊκό και Παγκόσμιο»,τόνισε ο Βουλευτής Αττικής κ. Γιάννης Δέδες, ως ειδικός αγορητής από το ΣΥΡΙΖΑ στην ειδική συνεδρίαση της ολομέλειας της Βουλής για την Ημέρα Μνήμης της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων του Πόντου, σχολιάζοντας ταυτόχρονα, πως«η τουρκική διπλωματία οφείλει να ξαναδιαβάσει με έναν πανανθρώπινο ορθολογισμό τις πηγές της ιστορίας του τουρκικού έθνους, να επισημάνει ιστορικές αλήθειες σχετικά µε το Ελληνικό έθνος, δίνοντας έτσι κατά τον 21ο αιώνα, χώρο σε μια εξομολογητικήσυγγνώμη για τις άδικες πράξεις σε βάρος των Ελλήνων του Πόντου».

Ο κ. Δέδες εξήγησε ότι, από την ιδεολογική μονομέρεια, όπως εκείνη των φονταμενταλιστών Μουσουλμάνων της εποχής ή των σύγχρονωνπαραδειγμάτων τουΝαζισμού και του Φασισμού υπέφερε -επανειληµµένως- η ανθρωπότητα, εξηγώντας παράλληλαπως η σημερινή μονομέρεια, αλλά και η αδιαλλαξία του συμπεριφερόμενου ως ΣουλτάνουΕρντογάν στις σχέσεις του με την Ελλάδα, την Κύπρο και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο δηλητηριάζουν την καλή γειτονία και την ευρύτερη συνύπαρξη.

Αναφερόμενος στη στάση της ελληνικής Πολιτείας, ο κ. Δέδες ερμήνευσετη γνώση ως θεμέλιο και κινητήριο δύναμη που αποτυπώνεταιστην ανάγκη διδασκαλίας της ιστορίας του Πόντου στα Ελληνόπουλα και η οποία μπορεί να αποτελέσει τη βάση συνεννόησης με την Τουρκική ηγεσία για εκείνη τη δημόσια συγνώμη που δεν θα ταπεινώνει το Τουρκικό έθνος, αλλά θα δικαιώνει ηθικά τις εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες ελληνικές ψυχές.

Κλείνοντας, την ομιλία του ο κ. Δέδες επεσήμανε τη σπουδαιότητα της διασφάλισης της συμπόρευσης των δύο λαών -εν ειρήνη- με πίστη στο δρόμο δόμησης ενός καλύτερου μέλλοντος για τις επερχόμενες γενιές,  αφήνοντας τη βία και το μίσος για τον «άλλο», το «διαφορετικό» να κατοικούν πλέον, μόνο στις μαύρες σελίδες των βιβλίων της Ιστορίας.

Council of the European Union      16/5/2018 Declaration by the High Representative, Federica Mogherini on behalf of the EU on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, 17 May 2018 On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to combat all forms of discrimination and hate crime, on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics, and to continue to actively promote and protect the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons. Inside and outside the European Union, LGBTI persons are too often targets of violence and hate crime. They are still the frequent subject of discrimination and maltreatment on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or sex characteristics. In many countries having a partner of the same sex remains a crime. People are arrested, imprisoned, and in some cases executed, just because of the relationship they are in. Even in countries with legal protection of sexual orientation, stigmatisation due tohomophobia, transphobia and biphobia remains high, leading to social exclusion with economic and health-related costs on societies. 2018 is an important year for human rights, as we mark the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its first article reads "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights". LGBTI persons are no exception, and the EU will therefore continue to fight for "equal rights for all" regardless of sexual orientation. Through a combination of political and human rights dialogues, awareness-raising activities, financial assistance and specific policy tools such as the "European Commission's List of actions to advance LGBTI equality" and the EU "Guidelines to promote and protect the enjoyment of all human rights by LGBTI persons" the European Union will continue to address discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and show the European Union's commitment to advance LGBTI equality in the European Union and beyond. The European Union pays tribute today to all those working to promote and protect the human rights of LGBTI persons. Allow us to reiterate that "Human rights Defenders, you are not alone and the European Union will always be with you". European Council      15/5/2018 Letter from President Donald Tusk to the members of the European Council ahead of their informal dinner and the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia Following Prime Minister Borissov's kind invitation, we will meet in Sofia tomorrow for an informal working dinner ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit. As planned, our discussion will focus on innovation and the digital economy – two themes of strategic reflections under the Leaders' Agenda. The enclosed Note outlines the main issues at stake to guide our discussion. You will be invited to reflect on two questions: What should be done at the EU level to support and boost breakthrough and disruptive innovation? How can the EU become a major player in the field of big data? This will be an open debate, without written conclusions at this stage. However, as always, it will help to steer the European Council decisions in June. During our meeting, we will also reflect on recent global developments, in particular following President Trump's announcements on Iran and trade as well as the latest, dramatic events in Gaza. As regards the US decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, I will ask the three leaders who are signatories to the agreement, that is Prime Minister May, Chancellor Merkel and President Macron, to present their assessment of the situation following the US withdrawal. I would like our debate to reconfirm without any doubt that as long as Iran respects the provisions of the deal, the EU will also respect it. This is the line already discussed by our foreign ministers and presented by the United Kingdom, Germany and France, who are working hard to sustain the deal. We should also get an update from High Representative Mogherini, while President Juncker will share his thoughts on how the interests of the European companies engaged in economic cooperation with Iran can be best preserved. When it comes to the US trade measures, President Juncker will debrief us on the state of play. As we know, the US tariffs on steel and aluminium cannot be justified on the grounds of national security. This is why we agreed in March to call for the permanent exemption of the EU from these tariffs and strongly supported the steps taken by the European Commission to ensure that the interests of the EU are fully protected. This includes the possibility to respond to the US measures as appropriate and in a proportionate manner, in compliance with the World Trade Organisation rules. While recalling the European commitment to strong transatlantic relations as a cornerstone of the security and prosperity of both the United States and the European Union, we also underlined our support for dialogue on trade issues of common concern. Tomorrow night I will propose we stick to our guns. Our renewed and full support for the European Commission will strengthen its position in the negotiations with the US. This is the only way to protect European interests. It is clear that it is not the EU that is putting transatlantic trade relations at risk. But we need to be sure that we have done everything in our power, and within the limits of the international trade rules, to avoid a negative scenario. The following day, we will meet our Western Balkan partners collectively for the first time in 15 years. After my recent trip to the region, I am convinced that the EU is the only partner that cares genuinely about the stability of the entire region and a prosperous future for its peoples – as opposed to treating it as a geopolitical game of chess, in which the people are pawns. The European perspective for the Western Balkans should remain a firm commitment on both sides. But apart from the political declarations about the future, we must demonstrate that we care about the economic development of the Western Balkans here and now. Investing in infrastructural and human connections with and within the Western Balkans region is in the EU's best interest. And the objective of our summit is to prove it.
