● Eurogroup   12/10/2023 19:46 | Press release | G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Statement   We, the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, met in Marrakech, joined by the Heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank Group (WBG), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Financial Stability Board (FSB). We were honored to be joined by the Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko. We express our deepest condolences to the victims and their families affected by the earthquakes in Morocco and Afghanistan as well as the floods in Libya. We are committed to providing necessary assistance. We hope that the successful World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Marrakech will accelerate Morocco’s strong recovery from the disaster. We unequivocally condemn the recent terror attacks by Hamas on the State of Israel and express our solidarity with the Israeli people.

Weather Ballooning from Space Like weather balloons, radio occultation data from navigation satellites provide valuable information about temperature, pressure, and other constituents in the atmosphere. A NASA-funded project is creating an open repository of these data.           Applying AI to Weather and Climate Data A collaborative effort involving NASA’s Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team (IMPACT) is applying AI to weather and climate data to create an AI Foundation Model.           Visualize and Explore Surface Elevation Data with OpenAltimetry OpenAltimetry provides cloud-based access for searching for and working with data from NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2). Data from ICESat are scheduled to be added in November.

The latest from the United Nations The escalating conflict in the Middle East dominated the headlines and the work of the United Nations over the past week.  Throughout the crisis, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly spoken out about the need to protect all civilians and minimize the loss of life. On Friday, he shared his perspective on the devastating events unfolding, in an opinion essay. We have approached a moment of calamitous escalation, and find ourselves at a critical crossroads. It is imperative that all parties — and those with influence over them — do everything possible to avoid fresh violence or spillover of the conflict to the West Bank and the wider region. Clearly, the grievances felt by the Palestinian people do not justify the terror that was unleashed against civilians in Israel. I once again utterly condemn the abhorrent attacks by Hamas and others that terrorized Israel. And clearly, the horrific acts by Hamas do not justify responding with collective punishment of the Palestinian people. But any solution to this tragic, decades-long ordeal of death and destruction requires full recognition of the circumstances of both Israelis and Palestinians, of both their realities and both their perspectives. We cannot ignore the power and the pull of collective memory; the circumstances that shape and define our identity and our very essence.  This horrifying cycle of ever-escalating violence and bloodshed must end. It is clear that the two sides in this conflict cannot achieve a solution without concerted action and strong support from us, the international community. That is the only way to save any chance of security and opportunity for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets – autumn 2023 Dear Madam, dear Sir, The Directorate-General of Agriculture and Rural Development has published the autumn 2023 edition of the short-term EU agricultural outlook. This edition of the report presents the latest changes in overall market fundamentals and their impacts on main EU agricultural markets. It also includes updated balance sheets for all of them. Presented prospects take into account the latest available information on the weather developments until mid-September, availability and affordability of inputs (e.g. energy, fertilisers, feed), producer prices, consumer price developments, such as food inflation. There have been signs of positive market prospects, as input costs continued declining (e.g. energy, fertilisers and feed) and the food inflation has continued being stable although at a high level. Impacts of adverse weather conditions and uncertainty of developments in Ukraine could, however, still present upside risks for agricultural production as well as commodity and agricultural prices. Sector specific highlights In more details, the short-term prospects for arable crops (including sugar), specialised crops (olive oil, wine, apples and oranges), milk and dairy, and meat sectors as outlined in the report can be found here: Arable crops Specialised crops Milk and dairy Meat All EU balance sheets are available in the Agri-food data portal only, in the form of both tables and graphs.

In addition, did you know that… … France was the largest EU cereal producer in 2021/22 (more than 67 million t)? … the sunflower seed yield varied in Romania from 0.7 t/ha to 3.0 t/ha between 2007-2018? … that in 2021/22 the largest average apparent use of wine per capita was in Spain and Italy (around 50 l)? … that in 2021, 70% of EU dairy milk production was concentrated in 6 EU countries? … that the two largest EU pigmeat producing countries are Germany and Spain? This, and more could be found in detailed Member State data accessible and visualised on the JRC Data-Modelling platform of resource economics, under EU estimated agricultural balance sheets.

IGCAT Newsletter Third Quarter 2023 IGCAT VOICE

Art, love and creativity are powerful tools and when transmitted through well-directed audio-visual material the message can reach and capture many hearts. For this reason IGCAT has cleverly developed the annual Food Film Menu competition, to select each year the very best short food films that carry strong messages about the importance to safeguard and promote cultural and food diversity. The beautiful thing is when communities see themselves reflected and recognised for their uniqueness: this is a great source of local pride. Often, the protagonists who are local people were unaware that they have something special until they were filmed.

Watching the Food Film Menu evolve over the past 4 years, I have seen the level of the competition consistently rise, with over 50 films for the international jury to select from this year. It was not an easy task to pick 11 to form this year's menu, yet the jury hope the ones we chose for you show many aspects and equally important messages on food and sustainability. The 12 piece film sequence (including the newly launched introductory video about IGCAT's World Region of Gastronomy programme) is a 40-minute journey across our shared planet and is available to Film Festivals across the globe. Screening the Food Film Menu and bringing it to a broader audience has been extremely valuable for the FoodFilmFestival in Aarhus. Therefore, I warmly invite more and more festivals to join the IGCAT's network. The films are also available on IGCAT's website where you are invited to watch and vote for your favourite. Food Film Menu 2023: category winners announced!

An online vote to select the Public's Favourite Film among the category winners of IGCAT's International Food Film Menu 2023 is open until 17 October 2023. The Public’s Favourite Film of the Food Film Menu 2023 will be announced together with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Prize at the 35th Girona Film Festival on 11 November 2023.
