The following GAIN reports were released on July 7, 2023. _______ Chile: Retail Foods In 2022, the Chilean retail food industry witnessed a robust recovery, with total sales reaching approximately $29.5 billion, a 20.9 percent over 2021. Supermarkets and grocery stores remained the primary retail channels for food products, accounting for around 55.5 percent of the market share. Chile has one of Latin America's highest incomes per capita, at $28,887 PPP. There is good sales potential in the Chilean market for U.S. exports of craft beer, distilled spirits, beef cuts, poultry, pork, dairy products (cheeses and ice creams), sauces/mixes/condiments and seasonings, prepared food and frozen meals, snacks foods, and healthy food products. Singapore: Retail Foods Singapore’s food retail sector is highly developed and competitive. Eleven New Agricultural Officers Sworn into Foreign Service Contact: press-fas@usda.gov WASHINGTON, July 10, 2023 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Alexis M. Taylor administered the oath of office today to 11 employees of USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service who will serve American agriculture internationally as members of the Foreign Service. At U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions on five continents, diplomats begin their careers as agricultural attachés, where they will track and report on global agricultural production and commerce, find export opportunities, improve food security, and support U.S. foreign policy goals. "I am extremely proud of this diverse group of diplomats who completed their rigorous training and will now serve on the frontlines of agricultural diplomacy,” Taylor said. “These talented officers will strengthen our Foreign Service as they begin their work protecting and advancing the interests of U.S. agriculture, which today is more crucial than ever as the world's agricultural trade grows more competitive and dynamic.” The officers sworn in today are: Craig Elliot from Petaluma, Calif., assigned to the OAA in Tokyo, Japan. Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, to discuss shared priorities.

The Prime Minister noted the devastating wildfire season in the province and underscored the need to work together to keep people safe and address the effects of climate change.

The Prime Minister and the Premier agreed to work together on making life more affordable for Canadians, creating good middle-class jobs, fostering economic growth, and advancing reconciliation. They discussed their desire to collaborate to reduce emissions across sectors and respond to the growing global demand for lower and net-zero emissions energy, including liquefied natural gas, with the objective of achieving carbon neutrality in Alberta and Canada by 2050 while growing the economy. They also reiterated their commitment to establishing a bilateral working group between Canada and Alberta to advance top economic priorities in the energy and resource sectors.

NSF invests $162 million in research centers to accelerate materials science from lab to factory

NSF backs nine Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers to create novel materials that can solve big challenges and enable the industries of tomorrow.

A $162 million investment from the U.S. National Science Foundation will drive the creation of advanced materials capable of remarkable things — from being tough enough to withstand the heat of a fusion reactor to processing information at the quantum level. Nine Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) will each receive $18 million over six years. The centers aim to transform fundamental scientific breakthroughs into tangible benefits for multiple sectors of the U.S. economy and innovations that can be produced on tomorrow's factory floors.

"NSF's Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers will help us seize new opportunities in semiconductors, biotech, quantum information and more, addressing the needs of our society and advancing critical emerging technologies," said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. "They will do so by expanding and enriching the ecosystem of innovation across our country."

The agreement creates a long-lasting legal framework that regulates the terms and conditions for New Zealand’s participation in European programmes, including its involvement in the governance structures and its financial contribution. The agreement opens the doors to New Zealand’s participation in the framework programme for research and innovation Horizon Europe (2021-2027). "New Zealand and the European Union have a long history of cooperation in the field of research. With this agreement we want to make a step forward to support our research and innovation communities and our respective economic sectors, but also to contribute to science progress in areas that matter to the whole planet." Diana Morant Ripoll, Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation New Zealand and the EU will cooperate in research projects related to climate change and carbon-neutrality but also in other areas such as big data, precision agriculture, sustainable energy, earthquake research and industrial innovation. The agreement is expected to boost bilateral cooperation in research and innovation. The EU is New Zealand’s most significant regional science and innovation partner, with more than half of New Zealand’s researchers regularly engaged in active collaborations with EU partners. Around 4 000 businesses in New Zealand perform research and development activities, with many more engaging in innovation. New Zealand has 8 Universities, 7 Crown Research Institutes, and several independent research organisations.
