PRESS RELEASE Catalonia recommended for the title of World Region of Gastronomy 2025 12 May 2023 An international jury comprising of four international experts, accompanied by IGCAT’s President, Diane Dodd PhD considered the application of Catalonia for the title World Region of Gastronomy 2025. After reviewing the bid book submitted on 31st January 2023, the jury visited the region, 8-12 May 2023. The aim of the visit was to assess the region’s appropriateness and readiness to host the title in 2025. The jury will prepare a comprehensive report with recommendations to support the region’s journey, and this will be delivered to IGCAT so that IGCAT Board can make the final decision.

Planting Hope: U.S.-Ukraine Memorial Tree Dedication Inspires Solidarity and Partnership In a touching display of unity, remembrance, and resilience, the U.S.-Ukraine Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony took place May 10, 2023, at the prestigious U.S. National Arboretum. The planting not only commemorated the strong strategic partnership between the United States and Ukraine, but also celebrated the ongoing commitment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to share expertise and information to enhance productivity, increase the use of new technologies, and grow bilateral trade and assistance with Ukraine. The event was organized and championed by Olena Gnes and Serhii Haranskyi, a remarkable couple who have dedicated their lives to shedding light on the daily struggles faced in their homeland of Ukraine. AHEPA and DOP play BINGO for a cause!

Hi there, Earlier this week, I was honored to join President Obama in Chicago to introduce the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance’s MBK Model Communities initiative.

Let me explain what that means: Over the past year, our team visited dozens of MBK communities across the country to learn more about the outcomes and successes they’ve achieved within our six MBK milestones. We’ve searched the nation for real, measurable impact. That means communities that demonstrated significant milestone progress at a population level, communities that have passionate buy-in from government leaders who have created and enacted action plans, and communities that will be dynamic members of this cohort. With all that in mind, I’m honored to announce the four communities that comprise our cohort of MBK Model Communities:  MBK Newark MBK Newark is led by the Newark Opportunity Network, and in collaboration with the leadership of the Mayor’s office, Newark has reduced homicides by 55 percent. MBK Omaha MBK Omaha is led by the African-American Empowerment Network. Through their wraparound approach, they have reduced homicides by 30 percent. MBK Yonkers MBK Yonkers is led by the Yonkers Independent School District. The city has the highest graduation rate in the state of New York for students of color at 91 percent. MBK Tulsa MBK Tulsa is led by ImpactTulsa. Tulsa has ensured all elementary schools have an early learning pre-K. ImpactTulsa increased attendance for students of color by 33 percent. I hope you’ll take a moment to learn more about these communities and their work here.

We were honored to be joined virtually by the Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko. We reaffirmed our strong commitment to our united response to Russia´s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is also an attack on the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter, and to our unwavering support for Ukraine for as long as it takes. In the face of multiple and complex global challenges, we renewed our commitment to upholding the free, fair and rules-based multilateral system and elevated our engagement with international partners to new heights through an extensive dialogue to advance international cooperation and deliver prosperity for all. We highly valued the productive dialogue with the Finance Ministers of Brazil, Comoros, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore. Barack Obama:Here’s what I was up to in Chicago

Hi there, Earlier this week, I made a trip home to Chicago to hear firsthand from some of the inspiring young people and leaders who are a part of Obama Foundation programming.  From meeting in a church I first visited as a young man, to joining the MBK Alliance for a timely conversation, check out this recap video of my visit.

On Wednesday, I was proud to help the MBK Alliance celebrate four communities that are doing extraordinary work to address the persistent opportunity gaps young boys and men of color face with real, measurable impact.  The cities of Newark, Omaha, Tulsa, and Yonkers, in partnership with organizations on the ground, are making strides to reduce violence, raise graduation rates, and increase school attendance for students of all ages.  With access to education and mentorship in environments free from violence, these young people are getting a fair shot to live up to their fullest potential. This work is urgent and these communities are setting an example for cities across the country.

I also stopped by Lilydale First Baptist Church on the South Side—where my organizing career began—to meet with Pastor Alvin Love, as well as Obama Foundation Scholars ahead of their graduation.  Pastor Love and I shared some advice with these leaders, who are graduating from the University of Chicago and Columbia University, as they prepare to put the knowledge they’ve gained to work in their own communities.
