Eurogroup     25/9/2019  Statement by the Eurogroup President on the candidates for the post of ECB executive board member At the 13 September Eurogroup, I asked euro area members to put forward candidates to succeed European Central Bank Executive Board member Benoit Coeuré, whose term ends on 31 December 2019. The call for candidates closed today. I have received one name. Italy proposed Fabio Panetta, senior deputy governor of the Bank of Italy. I look forward to our discussion at the next Eurogroup on 9 October, which will pave the way for a Council recommendation to the European Council. In line with the selection process established in the EU Treaty, the ECB and the European Parliament will be consulted before a final decision is taken by the European Council. Background on process The Eurogroup meeting of 9 October will consider and discuss the application. On the following day, the Ecofin Council is expected to adopt a recommendation to the European Council by reinforced qualified majority voting of the euro area member states. Such majority requires 72% of euro area member states in favour (i.e., at least 14 out of the 19), representing at least 65% of the population of the euro area. The European Council is expected to take a final decision, after having consulted the ECB and European Parliament by the end of the year. Council of the European Union     25/9/2019  EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta: new Operation Commander appointed Today, Major General Antonio Planells Palau was appointed Operation Commander of EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta, starting on 1 October 2019. He takes command from Vice Admiral Antonio Martorell Lacave. Major General Antonio Planells Palau is currently Commandant General of the Spanish Marine Corps and has been serving in the Spanish Navy for more than 41 years. EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta contributes to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast. The operation is part of the EU's comprehensive approach for a peaceful, stable and democratic Somalia. The operation also protects vessels of the World Food Programme and other vulnerable shipping, monitors fishing activities off the coast of Somalia and supports other EU missions and programmes in the region.

State assistance for Condor

Condor can continue flying

       

Condor Flugdienst GmbH, with registered offices in the German state of Hesse, is to be granted a KfW loan of

380 million euros that is 100% guaranteed by the federal government. The decision has now been taken by the

German government, saving 5,000 jobs.

       

"Condor has a future," declared Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier on Tuesday evening in

Berlin. Many of the company’s almost 5,000 jobs will be saved. And there are very good chances that

tax-payers will get their money back, he added.

Prospects for the workforce

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of

Transport, the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Chancellery were

involved in the decision to grant Condor Flugdienst GmbH support totalling 380 million euros.

On 20 September Condor Flugdienst GmbH requested support in the wake of the insolvency of the parent

company, Thomas Cook.

EU must approve loan

The bridging loan is still subject to the approval of the EU. The German government is in talks with the

European Commission in this regard. And the company must be extricated from the joint liability scheme of the

Thomas Cook group.

The bridging loan will give the company a chance to keep operating and flying and also offers staff

prospects of retaining their jobs. More than 200,000 German tourists are currently abroad, having flown out

with Condor. The federal state of Hesse is to shoulder 50 per cent of the risk of the federal government.

The deal “will allow the United States to start setting its own postal fees in July and allow other countries that receive more than 75,000 metric tons of mail a year to start phasing in higher rates in January 2021.” White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro called the decision a “huge victory for millions of American workers and businesses,” saving the United States between $300 million and $500 million a year.
