In response to the challenges faced by the European footwear industry, the European Commission ran study of the situation and prospects for future development.

The study includes reports on restructuring, research and innovation, education and training as well as an analysis of the competitive position of the sector and policy recommendations

The European footwear industry has been subject to a long period of transition since the early 1990s. EU manufacturers have maintained their competitiveness by offshoring the most costly production processes from their home countries to cheaper locations, and introducing cost cutting measures, which have included a reduction in employment within the sector.

In response to these challenges, the European Commission undertook a study on the industry that combined research, a survey of key stakeholders in the sector and case studies in nine different footwear-producing regions in seven EU countries.

The study highlighted that the EU footwear industry will continue to face a series of barriers in the coming years and identified ways in which the various stakeholders could assist the industry to address these barriers.

The study is in seven parts: a survey, five reports on specific areas of competitiveness and a synthesis report.

The Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and New Zealand, signed in Brussels on 9 July 2023, will enter into force on 1 May 2024.

Highlights

The current (2022) EU bilateral trade with New Zealand already totals €7.8 billion a year for goods and €3.7 billion for services. The EU exports to New Zealand goods worth €5.5 billion a year and imports New Zealand products of €2.3 billion resulting in a trade surplus for the EU of €3.2 billion.

Report highlights – December 2024

Agricultural productivity growth is challenged by climate change and its impacts on key natural resources. The EU improves self-sufficiency for main commodities and remains a net agri-food exporter, with a shift towards higher-value products. Consumer preferences are shifting towards proteins such as poultry and pulses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and reduced wine consumption. EU agriculture improves its environmental and climate performance, with reductions in greenhouse gases, ammonia emissions, and nitrogen surplus.   Please visit the Medium-term outlook webpage to download the report and data file.

Data crunch

Production: +1% annual increase in value of agricultural production in nominal terms.   Food security: Above 100% self-sufficiency levels for soft wheat, barley, meat, and dairy products.   Environment: 4% reduction in Nitrous oxide and 8% reduction in methane emissions between 2017 and 2035.
