The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to mark the New Year:

“Tonight, Canadians across the country and around the world will come together to reflect on the past year and look to the year ahead.

“This year, Canadians stood strong through some difficult times. Despite geopolitical instability, global inflation, and Canada’s worst wildfire season on record, Canadians didn’t give up. We rolled up our sleeves, looked out for our neighbours, and were there for each other.

“The Government of Canada provided targeted inflation relief to the families who needed it most. We delivered $10-a-day child care in over half the provinces and territories. We introduced dental care that will benefit millions of Canadians, including seniors. We attracted investments from around the world to our communities, creating jobs our workers can count on. And we worked together to build more homes, faster – from coast to coast to coast.

“There is so much more to do. Over the next year, we will keep supporting the middle class – creating good jobs, building more homes, and keeping the air clean.

“As we ring in a new year, let’s recommit to the values of unity, inclusivity, and diversity that define us as Canadians. Canada is the best country in the world. Let’s keep making it even better.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Minister Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s War Cabinet.

Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law, including international humanitarian law. He unequivocally condemned Hamas, its brutal terrorist attacks against Israel, and its unacceptable treatment of hostages. He called for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages.

Prime Minister Trudeau stressed the importance of the protection of civilians and ensuring safe and unimpeded access to life-saving humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza. The Prime Minister called for continued, significant humanitarian pauses and expressed support for urgent international efforts toward a sustainable ceasefire, underscoring that this cannot be one-sided. Hamas must stop using civilians as human shields, lay down its arms, and can play no role in the future governance of Gaza.

The Prime Minister and the Minister discussed the Middle East peace process and the importance of continuing to work toward a lasting peace in the region. They reaffirmed the strong bond between Israel and Canada and agreed to remain in contact as the situation continues to evolve.

That’s why the federal government is working with municipalities to break down barriers and build more homes, faster so Canadians – from young families, to seniors, to newcomers – can find a place to call home, at a price they can afford.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the federal government has reached an agreement with the City of Toronto, Ontario, to fast-track nearly 12,000 new housing units over the next three years. Right now, in communities across the country, building the housing we need, especially affordable housing, is too hard. That’s why the federal government is working with municipalities to break down barriers and build more homes, faster so Canadians – from young families, to seniors, to newcomers – can find a place to call home, at a price they can afford.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the federal government has reached an agreement with the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, to fast-track over 3,200 new housing units over the next three years. This work will help spur the construction of more than 40,000 homes over the next decade and help meet the demand in Vancouver.

Under the Housing Accelerator Fund, this agreement will provide almost $115 million to eliminate barriers to build the housing we need, faster. It will allow for high density development including multiplexes and apartment buildings, help fast-track development processes, and build housing near public transit. As part of the agreement, Vancouver will work to streamline re-zoning laws, expand affordable rental programs, cut red tape, and unlock non-market housing. These initiatives are going to significantly improve the way housing is built in one of Canada’s largest cities.

The Housing Accelerator Fund is helping cut red tape and fast track the construction of over 250,000 new homes for people in towns, cities, and Indigenous communities across Canada. It asks for innovative action plans from local governments, and once approved, provides upfront funding to ensure the timely building of new homes, as well as additional funds upon delivering results. Local governments are encouraged to think big and be bold in their approaches, which could include accelerating project timelines, allowing increased housing density, and encouraging affordable housing units.

The Government of Canada is supporting the middle class – and housing is key to that work. Our plan to double the rate of housing construction over the next decade will help build the housing supply we need. We will continue to work with provincial, territorial, and municipal governments, as well as Indigenous partners, to keep building more homes for Canadians, faster, and make life better for everyone.

“Today, we join Ukrainian communities in Canada and around the world to mark 90 years since the Holodomor and to honour the millions of innocent victims who suffered or lost their lives.

“In 1932 and 1933, Joseph Stalin’s Soviet regime inflicted a deliberate famine across Ukraine. The Holodomor – ‘death by hunger’ – was a genocide that resulted in the starvation of millions of innocent Ukrainians, including children. The Soviet regime also arrested, deported, and executed Ukrainians. Stalin perpetrated the Holodomor in an attempt to repress the will of the Ukrainian people, erase their identity, and destroy their aspirations for a free and independent Ukraine.

“In the face of violent, systemic oppression, the Ukrainian people stayed resilient, and nearly six decades later, in 1991, Ukraine declared its independence as a free and sovereign nation. Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukraine, and to this day, we remain steadfast partners and friends.

“The Soviet regime attempted to cover up the evidence of the Holodomor, and Russia still denies it was a genocide. Today, as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia’s brutal war of aggression, Ukrainians are again demonstrating their unbreakable, unwavering spirit. Ukraine will remain free; Ukraine will remain independent; and Canada will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of Switzerland, Alain Berset.

The leaders discussed pressing geopolitical issues. They unequivocally condemned the brutal terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas against Israel and expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law, including international humanitarian law. The leaders expressed concern over escalation in the region and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. They agreed on the need for urgent and unimpeded access to life-saving humanitarian aid for civilians. The leaders called for the humane treatment and immediate release of all hostages being held by Hamas. They also discussed the importance of continuing to support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion, including through sanctions.

In the context of the current geopolitical climate, the Prime Minister and the President discussed the importance of protecting democracy and emphasized the need to uphold and respect the rule of law.

The leaders highlighted shared priorities, such as strengthening local content in their countries’ respective broadcasting systems, including through regulations for online platforms.

The prime ministers underscored the launch of the Canada-CARICOM Strategic Partnership and how it will help build on the already strong, longstanding relationship between Canada and CARICOM members. Prime Minister Mottley thanked Prime Minister Trudeau for his commitment toward regional collaboration and for Canada’s hosting of CARICOM leaders.

Statement by the Prime Minister on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip

“Canada is deeply concerned by the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. We are working closely with allies and partners in the region to do everything we can to support affected Canadian citizens, including assistance departing from Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel as quickly and safely as possible.

“The rapid and unimpeded access of relief via a humanitarian corridor is essential to address the urgent needs of civilians in Gaza. International law, including humanitarian and human rights law, must be respected and civilians, journalists, humanitarian workers, and medical personnel must be protected. The loss of civilian life is deeply disturbing, and our heartfelt condolences are with all those whose families and communities have been affected. Canadians and people around the world must be steadfast in our support for the protection of civilians, both Israeli and Palestinian. 

“Canada will continue to support civilians of Gaza facing urgent humanitarian needs. “Today, as we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, we confront the lasting impacts of the residential school system for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in Canada. We come together to remember the children who were stolen from their communities, and those whose lives were stolen from them at these so-called schools. We honour the Survivors, many of whom suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. We listen to their truths, and we reiterate our commitment to building a better future for Indigenous Peoples and for everyone in Canada.

“Between 1867 and 1998, over 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend residential schools, where they were banned from speaking their languages and practising their cultures and traditions. Right now, in communities across the country, including London, Ontario, it is too hard to build the housing we need, especially affordable housing. That’s why the federal government is working together with municipalities to break down barriers and build more homes, more quickly, to help people – from young families, to seniors, to newcomers – find a good, affordable place to call home.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the federal government has reached an agreement with the City of London, Ontario, to fast-track the creation of over 2,000 additional housing units over the next three years alone, and build thousands more in the years to come. This is the first agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund, which was launched earlier this year to cut red tape, fix outdated local policies like zoning, and build more homes, faster.

This agreement will provide $74 million to increase the housing supply in London. With this new funding, London will allow for high-density development without the need for re-zoning – eliminating a major barrier to creating the types of homes we need. London will also move to allow up to four units to be built on a single property in low-density neighbourhoods, dispose of city-owned land for more development, and create partnerships with non-profit housing providers to build more affordable homes. Overall, this plan means more homes close to public transit, more rental units for students, and more housing, ranging from duplexes and triplexes to small apartment buildings.

The Housing Accelerator Fund helps cut red tape and fast track at least 100,000 new homes for people in towns, cities, and Indigenous communities across the country. It asks for innovative action plans from local governments, and once approved, provides upfront funding to ensure the timely building of new homes, as well as additional funds upon delivering results. Every agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund will require municipalities to end exclusionary zoning and encourage apartment building around public transit in order to help seniors, students, and families. Local governments are encouraged to think big and be bold in their approaches, which could include accelerating project timelines, allowing increased housing density, and encouraging affordable housing units.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani, on the margins of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India.

Prime Minister Trudeau extended his condolences to the people of Morocco, an African Union member state, following the recent earthquake, and conveyed Canada’s readiness to provide support.

Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s support for AU membership in the G20. The Prime Minister also highlighted Canada’s commitment to the African Union, as reflected by the recent establishment of a fully dedicated mission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Canada’s role as a permanent observer to the AU.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Mayor of Edmonton, Amarjeet Sohi, to discuss shared priorities.

The Prime Minister and the Mayor discussed the importance of Indigenous-led housing in Edmonton, and how the city could best direct funding from the $4 billion that will be made available through the upcoming Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy. They also discussed affordable housing and Edmonton’s broader housing needs, and talked about how federal funding can help bridge the housing gap for people in the city, the province, and across the country.

The two leaders agreed that all orders of government must work together on reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, public transit, net-zero emissions, homelessness, substance abuse, and supporting mental health.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Black Ribbon Day, the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communism and Nazism in Europe:

“On Black Ribbon Day, we remember the millions of men, women, and children who suffered and lost their lives at the hands of the Soviet and Nazi regimes in Europe.

“On this day in 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, allowing them to invade sovereign nations in Central and Eastern Europe. This agreement set the scene for the deadliest conflict in human history – the Second World War. Millions of people suffered, including Jewish, Romani, Slavic, disability, and LGBTQ2 communities, millions died, and survivors and their families continue to live with the trauma of the war today. After the war, many survivors moved to Canada in hopes of building a better future for their families and themselves. Their contributions have left a lasting mark on our country and helped build the strong and diverse Canada we know today.

“Every day, we are reminded of our collective responsibility to ensure that the atrocities endured by victims of the Second World War are never relived. Today, in response to global conflicts, Canada continues to step up to provide a safe haven for many who are forced to flee their homes because of persecution, war, and terrorism, and we continue to stand with the Ukrainian people in their fight against authoritarian aggression. Beyond our borders, we are committed to working with our international partners to defend democracy, promote peace, and safeguard human rights.
