Keeping Canadians safe from wildfires

May 10, 2024
West Kelowna, British Columbia

Last year, Canada’s wildfire season was the most destructive on record. Communities across the country were devastated, with thousands of Canadians being forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind. But first responders answered the call. They selflessly risked their lives to save others, and thousands of volunteers across Canada stepped up to provide help to their neighbours and communities in need.

Budget 2024 is about restoring fairness for every generation. That means taking climate action, protecting our communities, supporting our brave firefighters, and ensuring future generations don’t foot the bill for the costs of inaction.

Today, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, highlighted measures included in Budget 2024 to support volunteer firefighters, bolster Canada’s wildfire preparedness, and help Indigenous communities respond to emergencies.

Here’s what we’re doing:

  • Doubling the Volunteer Firefighter and Search and Rescue Volunteer Tax Credits, which will increase from $3,000 to $6,000 for 2024, saving volunteer firefighters up to an additional $450 per year.
  • Investing $800,000 more to expand firefighting capacity. This funding will help the International Association of Fire Fighters expand their training program for structural firefighters to respond to wildfires that impact urban areas. This builds on existing funding to support the federal government’s commitment to train 1,000 wildland firefighters.

Indigenous communities are often located in remote areas, where there is a higher risk of natural disasters. Budget 2024 announces investments in partnership with Indigenous Peoples to save lives and better protect communities against wildfires. We are:

Statement by the Prime Minister on Yom HaShoah

May 5, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will mark Yom HaShoah.

“On this day, we solemnly remember the six million Jews who were systematically and senselessly murdered during the Holocaust.

“As one of the darkest chapters in history, the unimaginable loss and inhumanity faced during the Holocaust will never fade. We can never bring back the lives lost. We can never finish the stories left incomplete. Many of those who survived and their descendants continue to live with the trauma of what occurred. It’s why remembering the past – however painful – also reminds us of our eternal obligation to stop this from ever happening again.

“This year, Yom HaShoah, and its message, comes as Jewish communities are still reeling from the events of October 7, 2023. Hamas’ brutal terrorist attacks against Israel were the deadliest attacks on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Canada unequivocally condemns the attacks and anyone who glorifies Hamas’ indefensible actions. Hamas are not freedom fighters; they are not a resistance; they are terrorists.

“Since October 7, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world have experienced a disturbing rise in antisemitism. That is unacceptable and must not continue. Whether it’s at a synagogue or a Jewish business or school; whether it’s wearing the Star of David or a Kippah – Jewish Canadians deserve to feel safe, supported, and welcomed. They deserve to live openly and proudly Jewish lives, without intimidation or fear.

“To Jewish Canadians, know that we stand with you. Our solidarity is steadfast. And our commitment to your safety is ironclad. We will continue to take action to keep you safe and raise awareness about antisemitism. Budget 2024 announced the creation of a new permanent national Holocaust remembrance program, with a $5 million investment. This will support initiatives to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and help more Canadians learn about the atrocities and the antisemitism that led to them. Budget 2024 also invests over $273 million over six years to implement Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, including over $29 million ongoing to combat hate crimes and enhance community security. And we’re renewing Canada’s National Holocaust Monument, increasing its visibility and engagement so its lessons reach even more communities across the country.

Advancing reconciliation with a new Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation

May 2, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

Canada’s relationship with Indigenous Peoples is our most important one. As partners with the original inhabitants and stewards of Canada’s lands and waters, we know that we need to make good on our commitments and responsibilities. This starts with trust, transparency, and accountability.

As part of Canada’s constitutional framework, Modern Treaties have been fundamental to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples for almost half a century. They promote strong and sustainable Indigenous communities, while affirming Indigenous rights over lands, waters, and resources. For over 20 years, Indigenous Modern Treaty Partners have been calling for improved independent oversight so that the federal government is held accountable for its obligations under Modern Treaties.

Today, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was joined by Indigenous Modern Treaty Partners and Self-Governing Indigenous Governments at the second Intergovernmental Leaders’ Forum, to announce the creation of an independent oversight body headed by a new Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation.

The creation of this new role is a major milestone and transformative shift in the Crown-Indigenous Modern Treaty relationship. The Commissioner will work to hold the Government of Canada accountable for its Modern Treaty obligations and advance key priorities. Additionally, the Commissioner will help ensure the federal government is held accountable for living up to the commitments in Modern Treaties and, more importantly, the nation-to-nation, Inuit-Crown, and government relationships they embody. Budget 2024 will be providing $10.6 million over four years to support the functions of the Commissioner and to stand up the office.

Statement by the Prime Minister on the National Day of Mourning

April 28, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the National Day of Mourning:

“Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we come together to honour the Canadians who have been injured, killed, or sick because of workplace incidents. We remember those who left us too soon, and we support all those who still live with the unimaginable loss.

“Since 1991, the National Day of Mourning has been observed across Canada. To pay tribute to those whose lives were tragically lost, many Canadians perform acts of remembrance, such as lighting candles, laying wreaths, observing moments of silence, and wearing commemorative pins, ribbons or black armbands. Monuments have also been created as tributes to the victims, like the LifeQuilt – a memorial honouring young workers between the ages of 14 and 24 who have been killed or injured on the job.

“The federal government is working with employees and employers to make sure workers are taken care of, including by strengthening the Canada Labour Code. As part of these efforts, through Bill C-65, we are fighting harassment and violence, including sexual and domestic violence, to ensure workers have the support they need – whenever they need it.

“Through the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, we’re providing up-to-date resources and services to raise awareness on worker safety, particularly for new and young Canadian workers starting their careers. I encourage employers, employees, and students to make use of the Centre’s resources – because safer workplaces will mean a safer, better Canada.

“As we mark the National Day of Mourning, let us take a moment to honour those who have lost their lives or were injured at work. I invite Canadians to join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #DayOfMourning to raise awareness and tell their stories.”

Honda to build Canada’s first comprehensive electric vehicle supply chain, creating thousands of new jobs in Ontario

April 25, 2024
Alliston, Ontario

From mining critical minerals to building cars and batteries, Canadian businesses and workers are attracting historic investments to help secure and create jobs, grow our economy, and keep our air clean. In the last four years, automotive and battery makers have announced more than $31 billion in investments in electric vehicle manufacturing across Canada. They want a reliable partner with world-class talent, and this is exactly what we have to offer.

And the world is taking notice.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, today welcomed Honda Canada’s milestone investment of approximately $15 billion to create Canada’s first comprehensive electric vehicle supply chain, located in Ontario.

This large-scale project will see four new manufacturing plants in Ontario. Honda will build an innovative and world-class electric vehicle assembly plant – the first of its kind for Honda Motor Co., Ltd. – as well as a new stand-alone battery manufacturing plant at Honda’s facilities in Alliston, Ontario. To complete the supply chain, Honda will also build a cathode active material and precursor (CAM/pCAM) processing plant through a joint venture partnership with POSCO Future M Co., Ltd. and a separator plant through a joint venture partnership with Asahi Kasei Corporation. Once fully operational in 2028, the new assembly plant will produce up to 240,000 vehicles per year.

Statement by the Prime Minister on Ridván

April 20, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Ridván:

“Today at sunset, Bahá’í communities in Canada and around the world will observe the first day of Ridván. A 12-day festival, Ridván commemorates the declaration of Bahá’u’lláh – the founder and prophet of the Bahá’í faith – as a Manifestation of God in the Garden of Ridván.

“During this time of joy and renewal, Bahá’ís will come together to celebrate life’s blessings, reflect on their spirituality, and elect faith leaders that unite communities around the goal of building a more peaceful, tolerant world. The first, ninth, and twelfth days of Ridván hold a particular importance, with many Bahá’ís taking this time to rest, participate in cultural activities, and spend time with their loved ones.

“Unfortunately, many Bahá’í communities face persecution around the world. In Iran, Bahá’ís experience discrimination and concerns for their safety. Many have fled Iran and found refuge right here in Canada. The Government of Canada stands with Bahá’ís – and all persecuted religious and belief communities under threat around the world – and we will continue to be a strong voice for the Bahá’í community’s right to practise their faith without fear.

“Today, about 35,000 Canadians follow Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings. They are our family members, our friends, and invaluable members of our communities. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish a peaceful and happy Ridván to everyone celebrating.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on the 42nd anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

April 17, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the 42nd anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

“The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is one of our country’s greatest accomplishments. Central to who we are as Canadians, the Charter represents freedom, democracy, and the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Forty-two years ago today, the Charter was adopted, and every year, we reaffirm its principles.

“The Charter guarantees our fundamental rights, affirming equality for all Canadians, regardless of race, age, or ability. The Charter protects rights relating to our use of both official languages. It ensures that we can express our thoughts or practise our religion in our own way. It preserves the right of everyone to be treated with respect and dignity – something that every Canadian deserves.

“On this occasion, we also celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which recognizes and affirms Indigenous and Treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in Canada. Section 35 serves as the foundation of our ongoing efforts to advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, notably through the 2023-2028 Action Plan – our evergreen roadmap to achieving the objectives laid out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Together, we will continue to walk the path of reconciliation and work toward building a renewed and meaningful relationship with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

Our North, Strong and Free: A Renewed Vision for Canada’s Defence

April 8, 2024
Trenton, Ontario

We live in an increasingly complex world, and the security threats faced by Canada are rapidly changing. Growing challenges to the international order that has long protected Canada’s prosperity and security, the rising impact of climate change, and the rapid pace of technological change is all affecting Canada’s national interests. These trends are also having real and tangible impacts on the daily lives of Canadians.

In response to these challenges, the service of our Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is more important than ever – from defending Canada and securing our sovereignty in the Arctic, to protecting our continent alongside the United States, to providing life-saving assistance to Canadians impacted by natural disasters, to strengthening NATO’s collective defence and providing military assistance to help Ukraine defend itself, to increasing our presence in the Indo-Pacific.

We need a robust military that can defend Canada and protect Canadians at home, including in our North, while defending North America and our national interests abroad with Allies and partners. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Minister of National Defence, Bill Blair, today released Our North, Strong and Free: A Renewed Vision for Canada’s Defence and announced a new overall investment of $8.1 billion over five years and $73 billion over 20 years in defence spending to be included in the upcoming Budget 2024. Canada’s defence spending to GDP ratio is expected to rise to 1.76 per cent by 2029-30, a major step toward reaching the NATO commitment of 2 per cent.

Since the launch in 2017 of Strong, Secure, Engaged, Canada’s comprehensive defence policy, we have already invested to strengthen the CAF, and we are on track to more than double our defence spending from 2016-17 to 2026‑27. We are acquiring new fighter jets and maritime patrol aircraft, and new built-in-Canada Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels are being delivered to Canadian sailors. In 2022, we invested around $38 billion to modernize our contribution to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Our North, Strong and Free builds on these previous commitments, providing a renewed vision for defence and investing in Canada’s capacity to respond to the significant global shifts we have witnessed since the release of Strong, Secure, Engaged.

Prime Minister concludes successful visit from Prime Minister of Greece

March 25, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Canada from March 24 to 25. The two leaders advanced co-operation in shared interests, including trade and investment, climate action, tourism, and creating good, middle-class jobs.

During the visit, the Prime Ministers agreed to strengthen bilateral co-operation in emergency management and public safety. Greece’s purchase of seven DHC-515 firefighting planes is an important step forward in joint efforts to tackle wildfires and an example of the robust partnership between Canada and Greece. The two leaders also recognized the importance of tourism and agreed to work together to develop a memorandum of understanding to create jobs and opportunity.

Prime Minister Trudeau announced a $10 million investment for the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal to build a new community centre in the heart of Chomedey, Laval. The complex will be a space for the public, including the Greek community, to celebrate culture, tradition, and heritage. It will include a theater, a sports complex, a library, offices, and other spaces to bring the community together and host commemorative events. With funding through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, it will be a modern and net-zero community complex.

The leaders emphasized the common values and close ties that unite our people. They attended a service at Evangelismos Tis Theotokou Orthodox Church, participated in the Greek Independence Day Parade, and met with the Greek-Canadian community of Montréal.

As NATO Allies and steadfast partners, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing peace, stability and prosperity worldwide, including in Ukraine and the Middle East. They also recognized the impacts of climate change and committed to deepening partnership to address this global challenge.

Quote

“Canada and Greece hold a shared commitment to building a better future. Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ visit will deepen our friendship as we create good jobs, grow trade, tackle climate change, and protect democracy. On this Greek Independence Day, we look forward to advancing this relationship – and making life better for all those who call our countries home.”

Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.."Joint statement by Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Mitsotakis"

Joint statement by Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Mitsotakis

March 24, 2024
Montréal, Quebec

We, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, met today in Montréal to celebrate Greek Independence Day. Canada is honoured to host Greece on this occasion, reaffirming the enduring friendship between our countries, as reflected in the strength and extent of our close strategic, economic, and cultural ties.

Canada and Greece have a rich history rooted in our shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. We believe in working together to address the world’s greatest challenges. Together, we stand shoulder to shoulder to advance international peace, security, development, and the promotion of human rights. Canada welcomes Greece’s recent legalization of same-sex marriages. Canada and Greece affirm their commitment to supporting LGBTQ rights at home and around the world. We are also committed to deepening our collaboration on Women, Peace, and Security initiatives.

As NATO Allies, and transatlantic partners, we reaffirm our commitment to collective security and defense, and we stand united in our pledge to promote peace, stability, and prosperity around the world, including in Ukraine and the Middle East. Climate change is impacting security dynamics around the world and we will work together as partners to address these challenges through the NATO Climate Change and Security Center of Excellence in Montréal, Canada.

We support helping countries become more resilient to global challenges, including those facing the shared crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. We have agreed to work together to find ways to deepen our partnership, with a focus on emergency management and preparedness, and adapting to the impacts of climate change in the face of increasingly frequent natural disasters, including droughts, floods, and wildfires. In this context, we were pleased to witness the signing by Greece and the Canadian Commercial Corporation for Greece to purchase and acquire seven state-of-the-art DHC-515 firefighting aircraft. These aircraft will help fight devastating forest fires that are increasingly ravaging areas of Southern Europe.

This is a sign of the dynamic trade and economic partnership that Canada and Greece enjoy. The Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) has created significant opportunity for both Greek and Canadian businesses and workers. Since its provisional application in 2017, trade between Canada and Greece has grown by 80%. Moreover, investors, in industries like health, renewable energy, infrastructure and mineral resources, have injected billions of dollars into our respective economies. The potential for further growth in trade and investment between our countries remains strong, including in sectors such as aerospace, defense and security, professional training, and tourism. This will create more jobs in Canada and Greece and create more opportunity for our workers.

Tourism is a key driver of economic growth, job creation and cultural exchange for both Canada and Greece. We look forward to strengthening our engagement and collaboration in this area, including exploring a Memorandum of Understanding in tourism promotion that looks at sharing data on how to best increase tourist flows between Canada and Greece, and collaborating on best practices to deal with the impact of natural disasters and climate change on the tourism sector.

We both take pride in the strong bonds and close cultural ties between our two countries. With nearly 300,000 Canadians of Greek origin and with many Canadians living, working, and studying in Greece, our relationship is tied together by our people. That is why Canada is investing in a brand-new Laval Community Complex alongside the Hellenic Community of Greater Montréal. The complex will be a space for the public, including the Greek community, to celebrate culture, tradition, and heritage. It will include a theater, a sports complex, a library, offices, and other spaces to bring the community together and host commemorative events. With funding through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, it will be a modern and environmentally friendly community center.

Finally, we reaffirm our support for close collaboration between our science research communities. Canada and the European Union recently concluded substantive negotiations towards Canada’s association in the EU’s flagship research and innovation program, Horizon Europe. We look forward to working with Greece, through this program, to explore new opportunities to work together on projects and initiatives in emerging technologies such as AI.

Canada and Greece have a shared commitment to building a better future. We both believe in creating good jobs, taking climate action, and standing up for democracy. Our shared values are deepened by the vibrant communities, families, and businesses across our borders. Our people make our economies stronger, our countries more prosperous, and our friendship resolute. Together, Canada and Greece will advance our work to make life better for all those who call our countries home.

Statement by the Prime Minister on World Water Day

March 22, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Water Day:

“Water is our most precious natural resource. It keeps us healthy, helps grow our food, and fuels our economy. Today, as we mark World Water Day, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving and protecting clean water for generations to come.

“Canada is home to a fifth of the world’s fresh water. But as climate change increasingly threatens our waters, we need transformative action to protect them. That’s why, last year, we announced the creation of a new Canada Water Agency in Winnipeg and invested $650 million over 10 years in the Freshwater Action Plan to protect water quality and ecosystems across the country.

“In response to calls from First Nations, we introduced Bill C-61, the First Nations Clean Water Act, which aims to put in place enforceable safe drinking water protections, in line with the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We are also working to help make sure all long-term drinking water advisories are lifted. Following substantial, necessary investments into First Nations communities, we’ve supported the lifting of 144 long-term drinking water advisories and over 270 short-term advisories.

“Kim was a thoughtful and tireless advocate for Canadians. During her time in Parliament, from 2015 to 2019, she was dedicated to serving her community and rural Canadians. She advanced progress on important issues – from affordable housing to rural broadband to health care. As Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, she stood up for Canadian energy workers and helped move forward on climate action.

Statement by the Prime Minister on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on International Women’s Day:

“Women in Canada have made transformative progress in shaping our country for the better. Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of women and girls around the world and recommit ourselves to building a fairer, safer, and more inclusive future.

“This year’s theme, ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’, reminds us that advancing gender equality is about building stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous communities. When women and girls are meaningfully supported and represented, we break barriers, spur progress, and shape a better future for generations to come.

“That means giving women more choices in the work force, closing the gender wage gap, and reaffirming our collective commitment to women’s leadership – from public offices to corporate boardrooms to university and college campuses. That is why we have invested nearly $7 billion in Canada’s first Women Entrepreneurship Strategy – helping women start up, scale up, and soar, in whatever field they choose. With over half of provinces and territories now offering $10-a-day child care and the rest well on their way, we are also seeing the benefits of record-high levels of women’s participation in the workforce. Building an affordable, accessible, and high-quality child care system is good for kids, good for families, and good for the economy.

Joint Statement from Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Meloni

March 2, 2024
Toronto, Ontario

We, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and President of the Council of Ministers of Italy Giorgia Meloni, met today in Toronto, Ontario, to reaffirm the profound friendship and the shared values that bind Canada and Italy and to discuss our shared interests, including to deliver sustainable prosperity for our citizens in a complex global environment.

We believe in the need to build the resilience of countries to manage global challenges. Canada and Italy can work strategically towards this goal.

As trading nations, Canada and Italy understand the importance of an effective rules-based order, and the benefits that derive from predictable, transparent, and accessible business environments. We welcome our strong and growing economic partnership that generates sustainable economic growth, jobs, and innovation in both our countries.

Canada and Italy enjoy a strong trade and investment relationship, with economies that are complementary and that benefit from the strength of small and medium sized enterprises. Italy is Canada’s 2nd largest trading partner in the European Union, with two-way trade reaching a record high of $15.8 billion in 2023. We also acknowledge the benefits to our relationship that come from a community of 1.6 million Canadians of Italian descent, who actively contribute to each of our landscapes.

Today, we have agreed to further deepen our political, economic, and strategic ties and elevate our already excellent bilateral relationship by committing to establish the Canada-Italy Roadmap for Enhanced Cooperation. This Roadmap will set out ambitious, concrete plans to collaborate, over the next 3-5 years, in priority areas, including energy security and the shift to a sustainable energy future, climate change and biodiversity, migration, sustainable economic growth, and research and innovation, including on artificial intelligence.

Through closer ties and strategic alignment, th

Statement by the Prime Minister on the International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers

February 12, 2024
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, also known as Red Hand Day:

“Children have no place in war. Every year, thousands of children are cruelly recruited and exploited as weapons of war. Some of these children die, and those who survive may bear the trauma for the rest of their lives.

“Canada is steadfast in its commitment to protecting children from armed conflict. In 2017, we established the Vancouver Principles, which to date have been endorsed by 107 countries, emphasizing a concrete approach to ending the recruitment and use of child soldiers.

“We continue to fund international projects focused on demobilizing child soldiers in conflict zones, strengthening accountability, reintegrating former child soldiers into communities, and preventing the recruitment of new child soldiers. These projects span from Colombia to West and Central African countries. Here in Canada, the Dallaire Centre of Excellence for Peace and Security continues to help the Canadian Armed Forces prevent the recruitment and use of child soldiers around the world.
