AHEPA Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos Calls for Immediate Action! |
|
Washington—AHEPA Calls for Congress to Halt Arms Sale to Turkiye, NOW! The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (Order of AHEPA) calls upon Congress to pass S.J.60 immediately, which would prohibit the proposed sale of arms to the Government of Turkiye, announced Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos.
In the Administration’s Policy Justification for the Republic of Turkiye’s “F-16 Aircraft Acquisition and Modernization,” Turkiye has requested to buy 40 new F-16 aircraft and to modernize 79 existing F-16 aircraft—a total defense packages estimated to be $23 billion.
According to the Policy Justification, “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security of the United States by improving the air capabilities and interoperability of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Ally that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe.
Congress received notification of the arms sales on February 1, 2024. U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) filed his resolution on February 5. Congress has 30 calendar days during which the arms sale may be reviewed.
“With the U.S. House set to recess for two weeks, and the Senate out next week, time is of the essence,” Tsivicos said. “Turkey is a failed NATO ally and in no way upholds the Administration’s policy justification for the arms sale, with which we take serious issue. The instability caused by Turkey to U.S. allies and strategic partners is well documented, and we strongly contend it harms U.S. foreign policy and national security.”
Tsivicos added, “We commend and sincerely thank Senator Paul for introducing the joint resolution. We urge the community to call upon their members of Congress to urge leadership to take action on the resolution and to pass it. As the largest and oldest Hellenic membership organization it is our duty to fight for justice in the region and maintain peace in the Southeastern Mediterranean. We ask all of our members to contact their Senators to support S.J.60. As we observe the 50th year of Turkish Invasion of Cyprus we must Never Forget.”

Administration's F-16s Deal for Turkey an Outrage |
|
Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos has issued the following statement: The Biden administration’s notification to Congress of its plan to sell 40 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey, following Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO, is an outrage. In addition, the swift, informal nod to the reported $23 billion deal by leaders of the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations Committees is a grave disappointment. Once again, the United States has given in to Turkey, a failed NATO member. The United States rightfully sanctioned Turkey for its violation of U.S. law when it acquired Russian missile defense systems and correctly took measures to kick Turkey out of the F-35 program. The F-16 deal conflicts with these measures and compromises U.S. interests in the region. The deal is a blow to U.S. credibility when it comes to holding violators of U.S. and international laws accountable. Moreover, Turkey fails to uphold U.S. values and international standards on human rights, religious freedom, and freedom of the press, yet continues to be rewarded. Why should Turkey change its ways? Separately, we hail the Administration’s notification to Congress that it plans to sell 40 F-35 fighter jets, as part of an $8.6 billion defense package of arms to Greece, as a strong victory in the defense relationship between the U.S. and Greece. Greece is a stanch U.S. ally and NATO partner and a vital contributor to U.S. security interests in the region. Although we laud the deal with Greece, we are dismayed that it seems to have been made so as to avoid tension between Greece and Turkey. The optics presented is that the Administration held the proposed deal with Greece hostage, or at bay, until the Administration could proceed with the F-16s deal with Turkey. In the end, Lockheed Martin is the winner.

Congressional Hellenic Caucus Initiative with POTUS on Cyprus Applauded |
|
The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (Order of AHEPA) commends the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues for its initiative to urge President Joe Biden to formally welcome President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides to the White House for a formal state visit, announced Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos. The Hellenic Caucus' bipartisan-backed letter presents a series of actions to demonstrate America’s appreciation of Cyprus as 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion. It is signed by Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Reps. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL) and Chris Pappas (D-NH), Vice-Chairs U.S. Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) and Dina Titus (D-NV), and longstanding Caucus Member U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-MD). “We sincerely thank the leadership of the Hellenic Caucus for sending its letter to President Biden and for proposing very meaningful and tangible actions that are attainable that will further strengthen U.S.-Cyprus relations,” Supreme President Tsivicos, who recently concluded a visit to Cyprus, said. “As a community, we know Cyprus is a vital contributor to U.S. interests and security in a region that is becoming increasingly volatile by the day. It is time for the world to know Cyprus’ value as a U.S. strategic partner, overcoming adversity to become one. We have appreciated President Biden’s support for Cyprus throughout his lengthy time in public service that included a landmark visit to Cyprus as Vice President. As the leader of the Free World, he has an opportunity to build on his legacy of support for Cyprus by elevating the injustice of the island’s division in this unthinkable fiftieth year of occupation while also further enhancing relations. “As the organization that led the policy fight for Greece’s inclusion into the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, we were also most pleased the Hellenic Caucus recognized the importance of the Administration’s steps to add Cyprus to the program with its inclusion in the letter. If this policy is enacted, the benefits to people-to-people ties between the two countries, as we have seen with Greece, are boundless.” Read the letter |

More students will be able to participate in AHEPA’s Journey to Greece program thanks to $70,000 raised at a fundraiser held at The Graycliff, Moonachie, N.J., Dec. 17, 2023 , announced Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos. More than 200 people attended.
According to Tsivicos, all the funds raised will go directly to the program to help defray tuition and program costs for participants thanks to event sponsor, Anthony Papamarkos, who owns The Graycliff. AHEPA Board of Trustees Vice Chairman George G. Horiates, PSP, chaired the event. |
|
“This is outstanding news as more participants will be able to experience Greece and earn valuable college credit at the same time,” Tsivicos said. “We are deeply grateful for Mr. Papamarkos’ generosity. We could not have achieved this successful level of fundraising without his charitable sponsorship. We thank the Papamarkos family and their team at The Graycliff, and Event Chairman George Horiates, for a remarkable evening.”
AHEPA’s National Educational Foundation administers the Journey to Greece program, which is held in conjunction with Webster University Athens. The event’s speaking program featured Journey to Greece alumni who shared testimonials. They thanked AHEPA and Webster University for offering an exceptional and “life-changing” program.
Educational Foundation Chairman George Vorkas announced to the audience that the Foundation’s goal is to raise $125,000, which is the amount needed to enroll 25 students in the program.
“Education is a key element of AHEPA’s mission, and we’re pleased to be fulfilling it through this unique, longstanding program,” Tsivicos said.
The fundraiser enjoyed the support of several Supreme Lodge and Board of Trustees officers in attendance. |
The AHEPA Journey to Greece program offers students the opportunity to earn six transferable college credits by studying about ancient and modern Greece. The courses incorporated visits to the archaeological sites and museums. Further, academic credit is transferred to a student’s home institution by an official transcript issued by Webster University, an accredited institution since 1925.
The 18th Annual Journey to Greece will be held June 16 to July 12, 2024.
The original Journey to Greece program began in 1968 and prospered until the early 1990s. The program relaunched in 2006. |
