This weekend at the BSM

Celebrate Halloween weekend on October 28 and 29 at the BSM. There will be trick-or-treating stations throughout the museum, and hands-on crafts for the whole family! Our ever-popular iSpy game cards and try-on station will also be available to add to the family-friendly fun.

OPENING NOVEMBER 1

We're taking a trip back to the 80s for our next exhibition, Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s. The decade known for its bold fashions: bright colours, sharp silhouettes, cone heels, and high-status sneakers, this exhibition highlights the joyful nostalgia of the times, while exploring the rise of conservative politics, globalization, and technological innovation that influenced our consumer habits of today. Dressed to Impress opens on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Book your tickets now.

A Night of Music at the BSM

We're excited to partner with The Music Gallery as part of their annual X AVANT XVIII festival for a musical takeover of the Bata Shoe Museum. Flowers on footwear and flowers in gardens! Inspired by our current exhibit In Bloom, we've partnered with the Toronto Botanical Garden for an exciting panel discussion on the cultural meaning and signification of the botanical choices we make in textile adornment, garden design, and shoemaking.

This event will take place at the Toronto Botanical Garden.

BSM x HOT DOCS
Friday, October 20 at 7:30 pm

Join us for a live episode as Avery Trufelman teams up with influential designer and activist Aurora James and our very own Director and Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack as they discuss the world of shoes as part of the Hot Docs Podcast Festival. Starting October 20, you can also see a pair of shoes designed by Aurora James in our Behind the Scenes gallery.

Botanical Inspiration & Footwear

$20 per person, Free for Friends of the BSM

Wednesday, October 11 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Inspired by our current exhibit In Bloom: Flowers & Footwear, we are excited to partner with the Toronto Botanical Garden for a panel discussion with TBG’s Director of Horticulture, Roger Gettig, sustainable footwear designer Nelson Silva, and Director and Senior Curator of the BSM, Elizabeth Semmelhack. The discussion will explore the cultural meaning and signification of the floral choices we make in textile adornment, garden design, and shoemaking.

This event will take place at the Toronto Botanical Garden.

Join us for our next workshop hosted by Nigel John from Legin Knits on September 2 or September 9 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm to learn how to crochet your own shoelaces using a 3-step customization process. This workshop is for all ages and for any skill level.

Celebrating Women of Colour in Sneaker Culture & Basketball

Friday, August 11 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
FREE Admission, Registration Required

We've teamed up with Full Court 21 Canada to present a dynamic panel discussion about the role and impact of black women in contemporary sneaker culture and basketball. Moderated by Black In Sports Business’ Marsha-Gaye Knight, Ladies First will address the changes, challenges, and triumphs within these disciplines. The conversation will feature high-ranking and influential Black women in basketball and sneaker culture, including Katherine Allen, Nadine Brown, Savanna Hamilton, Dinara Horsford, and Marsha-Gaye Knight.
