Female Agri-Tech and Ed-Tech Entrepreneurs Won the 2021 APEC Best Award

The annual APEC Business Efficiency and Success Target Award, known as the APEC BEST Award, announced its 2021 winners from a diverse group of effective entrepreneurs and innovators around the APEC region.

Mijin Gwon from Korea won the grand prize with her green biotechnology company, Ag-Uni, of which she is founder and chief executive officer. Her company developed a precision agriculture solution that helps minimize the variability of resources’ quality and yield by analyzing and monitoring the root and soil environment, formulating the best farming system to produce high quality products by leveraging the data.

“Agriculture is no longer just about food. It supports livelihoods and economic growth and touches many different aspects of our life including health, beauty and many others,” explained Gwon. “Our company aims to support the green biotechnology sector to be more sustainable by cultivating crop data to achieve the best agriculture system that can be widely used in rural and urban areas.”

Meanwhile, Kendall Flutey from New Zealand, founder and chief executive officer of financial education platform Banqer, was awarded the Best Top Manager. Her company provides an online tool for primary and intermediate schools to teach financial literacy to students.

“The idea is to empower children and provide them with education about finance, including debt, investments, even managing risks, as early as possible so that they can make the right financial decisions in future,” said Flutey. “The goal is to be in every classroom across New Zealand and foster further community economic development through informed decision-making.”

Sarah Delotaraya of SPD Jobs from the Philippines and Alice Ai of Shenzhen Qianyu Technology from China won the second and third place of the Top Managers category, respectively.

“Women workers and women-led businesses play an important role to support a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable recovery,” said Renee Graham, Chair of the APEC Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy. “Innovation, commitment and resiliency shown by women entrepreneurs through the APEC BEST Award reflect their vital role in achieving better economic recovery for all.”

The contest is an initiative of Russia, with Chile; China, Mexico; New Zealand; and the Philippines as co-sponsors of this year’s awards. This year’s contest featured 16 nominees from nine APEC economies, competing under the theme of “Women’s Business: Driver of Inclusive Recovery.”

“Women-owned and women-managed businesses have shown great flexibility in adapting to the challenges brought by the pandemic, and even saw opportunities for development,” said Natalia Strigunova of Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development. “What we found fascinating is that environmental, social and governance themes were featured prominently in this year’s contest.”

“The 2021 nominees presented some innovative projects in green technologies, shared best practice in family businesses and corporate social responsibility, and showed commitments to environment protection and green workplaces,” she explained,

Besides the 2021 APEC BEST Award grand prize and the award in the Best Top Managers category, the contest also awarded five winners in the following categories:

Main Results

The 53rd session of the EEA Council assessed the overall functioning of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA Agreement). The EEA Council also held a policy debate on the New Industrial Policy.

In the margins of the meeting, ministers held an informal exchange of views on China, Belarus and the Strategic Compass.

The meeting was chaired by Ms Anniken Huitfeldt, the Norwegian Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr Zdravko Počivalšek, the Minister for Economic Development and Technology (Slovenia), co-chaired the session, on behalf of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. On the EEA EFTA side, Ms Dominique Hasler, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport (Liechtenstein) was also present.

The proposal aims to ensure a competitive and fair digital sector with a view to promoting innovation, high-quality digital products and services, fair prices, and high quality and choice in the digital sector. "Today we reached an important milestone in the creation of a more open and a more competitive digital market. The Slovenian presidency has been working hard with member states and the European Commission to find a good compromise and to further improve the DMA’s goals: ensuring a fair and competitive digital market. We are proud that member states unanimously supported the general approach. This shows that the EU is strongly committed to ensure fair competition online. The proposed DMA shows our willingness and ambition to regulate big tech and will hopefully set a trend worldwide." Zdravko Počivalšek, Slovenian Minister for Economic Development and Technology Online platforms offering core platform services – such as search engines, social networking services and intermediation services – are playing an increasingly important role in our social and economic life. However, a few large online platforms are seen as ‘gatekeepers’ between businesses and consumers, creating bottlenecks in the economy through their market power and control over digital ecosystems. This negatively affects fair competition. With this proposal, ministers aim to create a level playing field in the digital sector, with clear rights and obligations for large online platforms. The main aim of the proposed DSA is to keep users safe from illegal goods, content or services, and to protect their fundamental rights online. It also modernises part of the e-commerce directive from 2000. "The Digital Services Act is a big and necessary step forward in the creation of a safer online environment. It provides solutions for the safety of our citizens in the 21st century, for our businesses and for our democracies. The proposal boosts trust in the digital space and allows for fully using the potential of the online platform economy in a safe way." They discussed the state of play of member states’ implementation of national recovery and resilience plans, as well as approaches to the preparation of the plans. Ministers explained the challenges they foresee in the implementation of the plans, such as the current supply shortages in the field of semiconductors and raw materials, as well as the current labour market shortage. Many member states welcomed the European Commission’s upcoming Chips Act and the proposal for a second IPCEI on microelectronics. This competition policy review was adopted by the European Commission on 18 November. Other topics on the agenda Watch the recording of the public debate Fit for 55 legislative package The Slovenian presidency provided an update on the state of play in the examination of the different elements of the Fit for 55 package of climate-related legislative proposals. The Fit for 55 package is a set of interconnected proposals adopted by the Commission on 14 July with the aim of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. The Competitiveness Council has a key role to play in making sure that the EU delivers on the agreed level of ambition that the package proposes, and could provide guidance by addressing challenges and opportunities for businesses arising from the transition towards climate neutrality. Overview of progress of the Fit for 55 Directive as regards corporate sustainability reporting The Slovenian presidency presented a progress report regarding the examination of the proposal as regards corporate sustainability reporting, which was adopted by the European Commission on 21 April 2021. The proposed directive aims to extend and strengthen existing rules on non-financial reporting, in order to ensure a consistent flow of sustainability information through the financial system and thus to facilitate the transition to a sustainable economy. The proposal is expected to be adopted in 2022. Progress report by the presidency Regulation on general products safety The Slovenian presidency provided information on the state of play in the examination of this important consumer protection file, which was adopted by the European Commission on 30 June 2021. The regulation on general products safety updates and modernises the general framework for the safety of non-food consumer products and is of major importance for the reinforcement of the single market. Progress report by the presidency Directive on consumer credit The Slovenian presidency presented a report on the progress made in relation to the proposal for a directive on consumer credit. The proposal, which was tabled by the European Commission on 30 June 2021, seeks to increase protection of financial consumers, as well as to contribute to a more harmonised EU legal framework for the provision of retail financial services in and between member states. ΙGCAT:Winner of the European Young Chef Award 2021 announced!

 

Winner of the European Young Chef Award 2021 announced! 24 November 2021 Espen Laumann, winner of the European Young Chef Award 2021 Espen Laumann from Trondheim-Trøndelag, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2022 has been announced today European Young Chef for 2021. With his dish titled From Frøya to Frosta he won the hearts of the international jury chaired by Michelin-starred chef, António Loureiro. Espen presented a recipe based on a Norwegian fishball filled with bacon and leek, potato cream with crisp, ginger-pickled rutabaga and musslesgtock buttersauce. The jury especially acknowledged the high level of sustainability and innovation of the dish, that at the same time demonstrated a strong connection to the region. The surprising taste was also decisive for the dish to be selected as the winner. António Loureiro congratulated all participants and admitted that the jury had a hard decision to take, as the level of all participants was very high. He invited the young chefs to keep cooking with passion and enjoy what they do. The competition was held at Praça, the renovated Municipal Market of Braga on 23-24 November 2021 and gathered finalists from 9 European Regions of Gastronomy including: Eric Montes from Catalonia, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2016; Pedro Cruz from Minho awarded 2016; Frida Jensen from Aarhus-Central Denmark Region awarded 2017; Andreas Dermatis from South Aegean awarded 2019; Janko Dulc from Slovenia awarded 2021; Inês Branco from Coimbra Region awarded 2021-22; Cristina Llorens from Menorca awarded 2022; and Léa Kanarski from Hauts-de-France awarded 2023. Andreas Dermatis from South Aegean won the second prize with the dish Lakani, while third prize went to Frida Jensen from Aarhus-Central Denmark Region and her dish Just Another Cabbage Head. Under the theme Innovation on Tradition, on 23 November the young chefs presented and exchanged knowledge about traditional dishes and local food products from their regions and then competed on 24 November proposing their innovative reinterpretation of the traditional recipes. The young chefs’ innovative dishes were evaluated by an international jury of chefs and experts chaired by Michelin-starred chef, António Loureiro, from restaurant a Cozinha in Guimarães (Portugal) and including: President of IGCAT, Diane Dodd, PhD; winner of the European Young Chef Award 2019 and Top Chef Greece, Eirini Giorgoudiou; IGCAT expert and President of the Cultural Association Euro East Alternative (ACEEA), Iulia Dragut, PhD; Vice-President of the Norwegian Chefs Association, Svein Magnus Gjønvik; IGCAT expert and President of the American Culinary Federation Jamaica Chapter, Randie Anderson. Besides the young chefs’ technical skills, the jury panel assessed their creativity, their ability to communicate the story of their dishes, together with their capacity to reduce food waste and single-use plastics in the kitchen, as well as ensure a balanced use of meat/fish ingredients and vegetables in their dishes. The competition was also an opportunity for finalists to learn about different food cultures from across Europe and establish a professional network, while promoting culinary innovation and sustainability using traditional cuisine and local produce. The European Young Chef Award 2021 was organised and promoted by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism (IGCAT) and hosted by the Municipality of Braga in Minho, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2016 (Portugal), in collaboration with the Consórcio Minho In. ΜΑΝΟΣ ΚΟΝΣΟΛΑΣ:  «Έξι νέα μισθολογικά, βαθμολογικά και φορολογικά κίνητρα για να έρθουν γιατροί στα νησιά»

 

«Έχουν  ωριμάσει οι συνθήκες για την ανάληψη μιας νομοθετικής πρωτοβουλίας, που θα θεσπίζει νέα μισθολογικά, βαθμολογικά και φορολογικά κίνητρα για τους γιατρούς που θα επιλέξουν να  υπηρετήσουν στα νησιά.  Παρά τα θετικά βήματα που έγιναν κατά το παρελθόν, θα πρέπει να ομολογήσουμε ότι οι ρυθμίσεις που συνδέονται με τα κίνητρα σε γιατρούς και νοσηλευτές για να υπηρετήσουν σε νησιωτικές και δυσπρόσιτες περιοχές, δεν έφεραν το επιδιωκόμενο αποτέλεσμα», τόνισε ο Πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Περιφερειών της Βουλής, κ. Μάνος Κόνσολας, στη συνεδρίαση της επιτροπής που ήταν αφιερωμένη στα ζητήματα της δημόσιας υγείας στις νησιωτικές περιοχές.

Η επιτροπή θα συνεδριάσει εκ νέου το επόμενο διάστημα, προκειμένου να κάνει ανακοινώσεις ο Υπουργός Υγείας και να απαντήσει σε ζητήματα και προτάσεις που τέθηκαν.

Ο Μάνος Κόνσολας κατέθεσε έξι (6) προτάσεις που συνιστούν ουσιαστικά κίνητρα για να υπηρετήσουν γιατροί σε ακριτικά νησιά και δομές δημόσιας υγείας νησιωτικών περιοχών όπως:

1^ον: Βαθμολογικά κίνητρα για την εξέλιξη των γιατρών στο ΕΣΥ, με την προϋπηρεσία δομή δημόσιας υγείας σε νησιωτική περιοχή  να προσμετράται διπλή.

2^ον: Χορήγηση επιδόματος στέγης, που θα είναι αφορολόγητο, στους γιατρούς που  θα επιλέξουν να υπηρετήσουν σε νησιωτικές περιοχές. 

3^ον: Επιπλέον μοριοδότηση για τις προσλήψεις μέσω ΑΣΕΠ. 

4^ον: Παροχή δυνατότητας στους γιατρούς που θα υπηρετήσουν 18 μήνες σε  νησιωτικές και δυσπρόσιτες περιοχές να ξεκινήσουν την ειδικότητά τους σε νοσοκομείο,  εκτός επετηρίδας.

5^ον: Δωρεάν εισιτήρια στους γιατρούς που υπηρετούν σε νησιωτικές και δυσπρόσιτες  περιοχές.

6^ον: Να λαμβάνουν και οι ειδικευμένοι γιατροί που υπηρετούν στα νησιά το ειδικό  επίδομα που λαμβάνουν οι αγροτικοί γιατροί.

Ταυτόχρονα, ο κ. Κόνσολας αναφέρθηκε και στο πρόγραμμα πρόληψης για τον καρκίνο που ανακοίνωσε ο ίδιος ο Πρωθυπουργός, ένα φιλόδοξο πρόγραμμα που είναι αναγκαίο, όσο ποτέ, στις νησιωτικές και δυσπρόσιτες περιοχές.

Ο Βουλευτής Δωδεκανήσου τόνισε ότι η εφαρμογή του συγκεκριμένου προγράμματος προϋποθέτει:

- Ενίσχυση των υποδομών στα νοσοκομεία των νησιών, αλλά και του αναγκαίου προσωπικού προκειμένου να διεξάγονται οι εξετάσεις πρόληψης και να μην υπάρχει μεγάλη λίστα αναμονής.
