On 27 May, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold an online hearing "Collective security in the GULF". The recent tensions in the Middle East, as well as frequent attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia or series of oil tankers detentions in the Strait of Hormuz, have contributed to a worsening of security situation in the region.
While de-escalation is key, the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council have significant influence on the stability of the region, where 20% of the global oil supply flows transit. The hearing will aim at evaluating the security situation in the Gulf region while analysing the possibilty of setting up a regional security mechanism
Highlights - Public hearing on the EU long-term strategy towards Russia - Committee on Foreign Affairs01/06/2021
On 10 May, the Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold an online hearing " EU long-term strategy towards Russia ". Amid the recent expulsions of diplomats and blacklisting of prominent EU officials as well as Russia's continued crackdown on the opposition, the Foreign Affairs Committee will take stock of the achievements and the shortcomings of the current EU strategy vis à vis Russia.
Members and experts will discuss how to rethink and update the EU's strategy towards Russia for the years to come. The elements put forward will feed into the forthcoming EP recommendations on Russia.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021 the FEMM and LIBE Committees considered the draft report with recommendations to the Commission on identifying gender-based violence as a new area of crime listed in Article 83(1) TFEU.
This legislative initiative requests the Commission to propose a Council decision to consider gender-based violence as an area of crime that meets the criteria established under Article 83(1) TFEU.
During this meeting, LIBE and FEMM committees also held an exchange of views with several experts in the field of gender-based violence and EU Law. The event fed into the abovementioned legislative initiative.

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.
The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.
The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

In the context of the exponential growth of COVID-19, the EP President has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.
The current precautionary measures adopted by the EP to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that EP's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

On Wednesday 2 June 1(6.30-18.00) AIDA and IMCO members will hold a joint exchange of views with Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, notably on the recent Commission proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, the "AI Act". The proposal suggests new rules and actions aiming to turn the European single market into a global hub for trustworthy AI.
This combination of the first-ever legal framework on AI and a new Coordinated Plan with Member States aims to guarantee the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses, while strengthening AI uptake in the single market, investment and innovation across the EU.
