In the face of increasing global uncertainty, particularly in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, we continue to work closely with our allies and friends to defend democracy, protect human rights, and uphold the rule of law.
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced he will travel to New York City, United States of America, on July 21 to participate in the World Law Congress, where he will emphasize the importance of continued collaboration to uphold the rule of law and build a more peaceful world for everyone. At the Congress, he will present the World Peace & Liberty Award to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is accepting on behalf of the European Commission, for its commitment to the promotion of peace through law.
While in New York City, the Prime Minister will meet with President von der Leyen and United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres. He will also meet with JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Dimon, to highlight Canada as an ideal investment destination and promote Canada’s positive economic outlook, important work in developing the North American electric vehicle supply chain, and role as a reliable energy supplier and partner.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co., Jamie Dimon, on the margins of the World Law Congress in New York City, United States of America.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Mr. Dimon discussed a variety of geopolitical and economic issues, including trade, sustainable economic growth, and carbon pollution pricing.
The Prime Minister highlighted Canada’s commitment to ensuring stability in the banking system, and the reputation of Canada and its industries as an investment destination amid global uncertainty and risk.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Mr. Dimon discussed the importance of the close relationship between Canada and the United States, and the opportunities this relationship provides for investments in key sectors that contribute to strengthening our bilateral supply chains, such as critical minerals.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced changes to the Ministry. The new Ministry, adding to a strong core economic team, is ready to deliver on what matters most to Canadians: making life more affordable for the middle class, growing the economy, and building a strong future for people from coast to coast to coast.
Building on the work done since 2015 to invest in Canadians and to strengthen the middle class and those working hard to join it, the team will continue to move forward on housing and putting more money back in families’ pockets. To deliver a better future for everyone, the team will also continue to fight climate change and walk the shared path of reconciliation.
The changes to the Ministry are as follows:
- Anita Anand becomes President of the Treasury Board
- Marie-Claude Bibeau becomes Minister of National Revenue
- Bill Blair becomes Minister of National Defence
- Randy Boissonnault becomes Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages
- Jean-Yves Duclos becomes Minister of Public Services and Procurement
- Sean Fraser becomes Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
- Karina Gould becomes Leader of the Government in the House of Commons

In light of Minister Gould’s recent news about an upcoming parental leave starting this winter, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Chief Government Whip, will serve as Leader of the Government in the House of Commons until her return. During this time, Deputy Government Whip Ruby Sahota will serve as Chief Government Whip.

- Since 2015, the Ministry has made real progress for the middle class and those working hard to join it – from lifting almost half a million children out of poverty with the Canada Child Benefit to delivering on our promise of $10-a-day child care.
- With the changes announced today, the Ministry retains a total of 38 ministers, in addition to the Prime Minister. In keeping with the precedent set in 2015, there is an equal number of women and men.
- The Cabinet is the central decision-making forum in government, responsible for its administration and the establishment of its policy. Its members are each responsible for individual portfolios or departments.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, on the margins of the World Law Congress in New York City, United States of America.
The two leaders discussed shared priorities for the upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA). The Prime Minister highlighted the need for continued international collaboration to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discussed the need for a reform of international financial institutions to improve access to climate, biodiversity, and development finance. The Prime Minister looked forward to continued dialogue with the SDG Advocates group, which he co-chairs along with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley.
The leaders spoke about the Secretary-General’s recent visit to Haiti in July and expressed their concern over the political, security, and humanitarian crises in the country. Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated his support for a Haitian-led solution, and highlighted Canada’s efforts to support the Haitian National Police, including through Canada’s leadership on enhanced international assistance coordination.
Both leaders expressed concern over Russia’s decision to terminate the Black Sea Grain Initiative and its potential impacts on global food security, most notably amongst vulnerable populations. The Prime Minister condemned Russia’s illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine and highlighted the global impacts of the conflict.
They agreed to stay in close contact on areas of shared importance leading up to the UNGA and the 2023 UN SDG Summit in New York this September.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the margins of the World Law Congress in New York City, United States of America.
Prime Minister Trudeau attended the event in New York City to honour President von der Leyen, who received the World Peace and Liberty Award on behalf of the European Commission, for its work to defend democracy and the rule of law.
The leaders reaffirmed their continued and long-term commitment to Ukraine as it resists Russia’s unjustifiable aggression, and discussed next steps as agreed at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Summit in Vilnius last week. They also condemned Russia’s decision to withdraw participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, noting the impact this will have on global food security, driving up prices and furthering inflation.
The leaders further discussed climate and the environment, energy security, and critical minerals. They underscored the importance of building resilient supply chains on the principles of transparency, diversification, security, and sustainability to support good jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President von der Leyen welcomed continued opportunities for Canada and the European Union to work together on these and other shared priorities, including accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, in the lead up to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week, G20 Summit, and COP28.
The two leaders highlighted the value of ongoing collaboration and agreed to remain in close contact.
