The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to welcome the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my congratulations to the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.
“Canada’s partnership with the United Kingdom, one of the strongest relationships between any two countries in the world, is defined by our rich shared history, our close friendship, and an unwavering commitment to human rights, democracy, and the rules-based international order. This includes our close partnership through the United Nations, international financial institutions, and other multilateral organizations. We are the only two countries to be members of the Commonwealth, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, G7, and G20.
“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Sunak to strengthen this relationship as we continue to address ongoing global concerns, including Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, economic uncertainty, and climate change. I also look forward to collaborating with Prime Minister Sunak to bolster our important economic relationship as we negotiate a comprehensive, ambitious, and inclusive Canada-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement, as well the U.K.’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Together, we will remain focused on creating good middle-class jobs and opportunities for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, while driving economic growth that benefits everyone.
“I wish Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss all the best in her future endeavours.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Diwali:
“Today, we join millions of people of South Asian descent in Canada and around the world to celebrate Diwali.
“A celebration of lights, Diwali is an occasion to honour the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and right over wrong. As people around the world gather with family and friends to light diyas, decorate homes, offer prayers, or exchange gifts and food, we are reminded to look to the year ahead with optimism and hope.
“In Canada, Diwali is an occasion for us to recognize the contributions of Canadians of South Asian descent, including Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities, to our country’s fabric. Diwali also invites us to celebrate the diversity that makes Canada strong.
“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating a very happy Diwali.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on United Nations Day:
“On October 24, 1945, in the wake of the Second World War, the United Nations (UN) was founded. Canada and the other founding members shared a vision of peace and security in a world that protects human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the international order. Today, we mark United Nations Day by joining with our international partners to reaffirm our commitment to this vision and to the mission of the UN.
“Since its founding, the UN has helped improve the lives of millions of people worldwide. With the combined strength of its 193 member states, it engages in peacekeeping operations around the world, delivers essential humanitarian assistance, and ensures a coordinated global approach to tackling ongoing and emerging crises and global challenges.
“The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all member states, represent the kind of powerful consensus the UN can achieve in pursuit of a better future for all that leaves no one behind. The Government of Canada’s 2030 Agenda National Strategy and Feminist Foreign Policy have guided our implementation of the SDGs and, as co-Chair of the SDG Advocates Group, I am driving progress toward these goals through partnership.
“The UN has come together in the face of intensifying challenges including the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and more recently Russia’s unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. The UN facilitates critical international cooperation, encourages unified decision-making, and provides humanitarian aid where it’s needed most.
“Russia’s brutal, illegal, and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine demonstrates a blatant disregard for international law, democracy, and human life. A historic vote earlier this month demonstrated UN members’ collective determination to uphold the principles of the UN Charter when they overwhelmingly condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine and called Moscow's move illegal. Along with providing important humanitarian and financial aid, the solidarity and cooperation of UN member states is critical in standing against Russia and in supporting Ukraine.
“Canada helped draft the UN Charter and, 77 years on, we remain deeply committed to its mission. For decades, Canada has partnered with its allies to address the most complex challenges of our time and today, we reaffirm our commitment to this crucial partnership. When we are united, we can build a stronger, safer, and fairer world.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Today, we join Sikh communities in Canada and around the world to celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas.
"On this holiday, Sikhs commemorate the story of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who was imprisoned in 1619 at Gwalior Fort. When given the chance to be liberated from prison, the Guru refused to be released without the 52 innocent kings who were imprisoned alongside him. Ultimately, he succeeded at freeing himself and the kings.
“Today, families and friends will gather to pray, feast, and light candles at their homes and Gurdwaras as symbols of hope, guidance, and freedom. On Bandi Chhor Divas, we reflect on the importance of standing in solidarity with those around us facing injustice, and the importance of serving those in need.
“This celebration is also an opportunity to recognize the important contributions that Canadians of the Sikh faith have made – and continue to make – to building a stronger Canada.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish a happy Bandi Chhor Divas to all those celebrating.”
