Statement by the Prime Minister on the results of the provincial election in New Brunswick

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the results of the provincial election in New Brunswick:
“New Brunswickers have chosen to elect a majority government led by the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Blaine Higgs on his re-election as Premier.
“I look forward to working closely with the provincial government as we recover from the global COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we will continue to safely restart the economy and lay the groundwork to keep New Brunswick communities strong and healthy. Through investments under the Safe Restart Agreement, continued partnership in the Atlantic Growth Strategy, and ongoing work on clean energy and electrification, we will build a more resilient economy in the province, and a Canada that is healthier and safer, cleaner and more competitive, and fairer and more inclusive.”

« Les Néo-Brunswickois ont choisi d’élire un gouvernement majoritaire dirigé par le Parti progressiste‑conservateur du Nouveau‑Brunswick.
« Au nom du gouvernement du Canada, je félicite Blaine Higgs pour sa réélection au poste de premier ministre.
« Je suis impatient de continuer à travailler en étroite collaboration avec le gouvernement provincial au moment où nous nous remettons de la pandémie mondiale de COVID-19. Ensemble, nous continuerons de relancer l’économie en toute sécurité et de jeter les bases qui permettront aux communautés du Nouveau-Brunswick de rester fortes et en santé. Grâce aux investissements prévus dans l'Accord sur la relance sécuritaire, du partenariat soutenu dans le cadre de la Stratégie de croissance pour l’Atlantique et des travaux en cours concernant les énergies propres et l’électrification, nous bâtirons non seulement une économie plus résiliente dans la province, mais également un Canada qui est à la fois plus sain, sécuritaire, propre et compétitif ainsi que plus juste et inclusif. »

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the passing of Aline Chrétien:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Aline Chrétien, wife of the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, former Prime Minister of Canada. On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Chrétien, their three children, France, Hubert, and Michel, as well as their extended family.
“Aline was born in Shawinigan, Quebec, and started in life with humble beginnings in a hard working family. She was a strong mother, and a devoted wife for over 60 years, who tirelessly supported one of Canada’s longest serving Prime Ministers during some of the country’s most pivotal moments.
“As one of Mr. Chrétien’s most influential advisors, Aline was known for her tenacity, sharp intellect, and acute sense of observation. The life that she and Jean shared together, including their service to Canadians, was built on a foundation of trust, hard work, and equal partnership.
“We owe a great debt to Aline, who faithfully served Quebecers and all Canadians, championed multiculturalism and bilingualism, and helped bring us closer together. Authentic and honest, she taught us the importance of persevering, even when things get tough.
“I offer my heartfelt condolences to my friend Jean, who has lost his partner and best friend, as well as all of Aline’s family and friends, and I join all Canadians in celebrating her life and mourning her passing.”

« C’est avec une grande tristesse que j’ai appris le décès d’Aline Chrétien, épouse du très honorable Jean Chrétien, ancien premier ministre du Canada. Au nom de tous les Canadiens, Sophie et moi offrons nos plus sincères condoléances à M. Chrétien, à leurs trois enfants, France, Hubert et Michel, ainsi qu’à leur famille élargie.
« Aline est née à Shawinigan, au Québec, au sein d’une famille humble et travaillante. Elle était une mère forte et, durant plus de 60 ans, elle a été une épouse dévouée. Aline a soutenu l’un des premiers ministres du Canada dont le mandat compte parmi les plus longs de notre histoire, mais aussi à travers certains des moments les plus déterminants de notre pays.
« Aline était également l’une des conseillères les plus influentes de M. Chrétien. Elle était réputée pour sa ténacité, sa grande intelligence et son sens de l’observation. La vie qu’elle a partagée avec Jean, y compris lorsqu’ils étaient au service des Canadiens, était fondée sur la confiance, le travail acharné et un véritable partenariat.
« Nous devons énormément à Aline. Elle a fidèlement servi les Québécois et tous les Canadiens, défendu le multiculturalisme et le bilinguisme et contribué à nous rapprocher les uns des autres. Authentique et honnête, elle nous a appris l’importance de persévérer, même quand la situation devient difficile.
« J’offre mes plus sincères condoléances à mon ami Jean, qui a perdu son épouse et sa meilleure amie, ainsi qu’à la famille et aux amis d’Aline. Je me joins également à tous les Canadiens pour célébrer sa vie et pleurer sa perte. »
