THE NEXT NORMAL FOR THE AEROSPACE SPECIAL PROCESS SUPPLY CHAIN By Paul Fisher, President – International Surface Finishing Academy The unfortunate truth is that recent events have been highly disruptive on aerospace supply chains around the country. The Special Process segment, which is one of the most difficult disciplines in this industry, is not immune. Some level of attrition across the supply chain is unavoidable. However on the bright side, and what the industry is beginning to plan for, is that experts expect that aerospace parts manufacturing demand will equal the past year’s Q4 output levels by the end of 2020, and by 2021 the sector is expected to reach an estimated value-added output of USD $448 billion - which would be a 5% increase over 2019. A highly skilled and robust aerospace supply chain is essential to national security and economic prosperity of the country. Yet today the industry faces impending shortage of quality suppliers, and because of this buyers, designers and program managers from key industry players are proactively engaging with existing and other capable suppliers that will become the next generation of this elite group of suppliers. During this turbulent and rapidly changing “Next Normal” we are preparing for, the Special Process segment of the Aerospace supply chain must be considered with special care as these process disciplines are exceptionally challenging, and not just any company can execute these services to Aerospace standards. These specialized services required highly skilled, certified, and very specialized companies who have the highest levels of quality built into their DNA. By definition Special Processes include “any process that could change or alter a part material or physical integrity by introducing stresses with mechanical, thermal, or chemical operations.” Some examples of these processes include anodizing, electroplating, heat treatment, materials testing, other types of surface enhancements as well as other material modifying processes such as welding and machining. Competent suppliers require very specialized skills, knowledge, experience, and the ability to adhere to the highest of quality standards as demanded by the Aerospace industry. More importantly, the most experienced existing special process suppliers should maintain their visibility and commercial continuity by staying engaged with the key buyers and supply chain managers of the industry. They should be leading the way forward with future changes in procedures and demands. Now is the time for those who have made it thus far to enhance their visibility by industry buyers with this being the perfect moment to remind them of your capabilities, capacities and new process developments. The inaugural Aerospace Special Process Supplier Summit on October 12-14, 2021, known as ASPSS, will be hosted by BCI Aerospace, the matchmaking specialist behind Aerospace & Defense Supplier Summit Seattle. The event, jointly organized by the State of Missouri, will feature pre-arranged meetings between buyers, engineers from Primes such as the Boeing Company and sub-suppliers showing adequate capabilities and services. The International Surface Finishing Academy will be offering a two day "Anodizing for Aerospace" workshop taught by the renowned Anodizing Expert William Corcoran, a highly respected consultant to the special process suppliers of North America.
