The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, will welcome the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the members of the College of Commissioners in Paris this Thursday and Friday, 6 and 7 January 2022. The Commission will also meet with the Presidents of the French Senate and the National Assembly.
An important moment at the onset of a presidency of the Council, this visit will take place during the first week of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a few days after the publication on 1 January of the Presidency’s programme. The visit will prepare the legislative deadlines with the European Commission for the first half of 2022, in particular concerning texts that have been announced as priority texts by the French President.
This two-day visit will allow for discussions between President von der Leyen and President Macron, as well as between the members of the French Government and the Commissioners.
On this occasion, President Macron will receive President von der Leyen and the members of the European Commission for a working dinner at the Élysée Palace on Thursday, 6 January 2022. The French Prime Minister, representatives of the Senate and National Assembly, and several French ministers will also attend the dinner.
The Commissioners and French ministers will meet for working sessions held the next day, which will notably address the following topics: the environment and fight against climate change (the Fit for 55 package, combatting imported deforestation); the development of a new European model (discussions on a new budgetary and financial framework, EU industrial and digital policies, trade policy); European defence and relations with Africa, the Western Balkans and the Indo-Pacific region; European social affairs and public health (directive on minimum wages, gender equality, the establishment of the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA)); European universities and research, and the establishment of a European civic service. These discussions will close with a working lunch presided over by the Prime Minister at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
At the same time, the French President will receive the President of the Commission. This meeting will be followed by a joint press conference.
The President of the European Commission and the European Commissioners will next visit the National Assembly and the Senate to meet with the Presidents and parliamentary group presidents.
In addition to these institutional aspects, a tribute will be paid to the founding figures of the European Union. President von der Leyen and President Macron will lay wreaths before the graves of Jean Monnet and Simone Veil at the Panthéon.
