The Prime Minister announces the appointment of two Senators

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the Governor General appointed Flordeliz (Gigi) Osler and Ian Shugart as independent Senators to fill vacancies for Manitoba and Ontario.

Flordeliz (Gigi) Osler is an internationally renowned surgeon who operates in Winnipeg, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, and a dedicated advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion. She was the first woman surgeon and the first racialized woman elected President of the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Osler is known for her active involvement within and dedication to the medical community in Canada and abroad. She is also the recipient of numerous honours and awards.

Ian Shugart devoted his life to public service and held increasingly senior leadership positions within the federal public service, most recently as the 24th Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet. He served as the principal link between the Prime Minister and the public service of Canada, including by delivering critical and timely support to Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout his career, Mr. Shugart also shaped the modernization of public health, provided leadership on international climate change negotiations, and managed sensitive national security issues and key international relationships.

Dr. Osler and Mr. Shugart were recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and chosen using a merit-based process open to all Canadians. This process ensures Senators are independent, reflect Canada’s diversity, and are able to tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing the country.

Βραβείο στην Περιφέρεια Κρήτης από την Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία της Κίνας για την καλή συνεργασία και τον απεγκλωβισμό χιλιάδων κινέζων από την εμπόλεμη Λιβύη

Η Περιφέρεια Κρήτης βραβεύτηκε με τιμητική διάκριση από την Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία της Κίνας για την καλή συνεργασία και για την συμβολή της στο απεγκλωβισμό χιλιάδων Κινέζων πολιτών από την εμπόλεμη Λιβύη τον Φεβρουάριο του 2011. Η εκδήλωση με τίτλο «Τελετή βραβείων εξαιρετικής συνεισφοράς» έγινε στο κτίριο της Κινεζικής Πρεσβείας στην Αθήνα με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση 50 χρόνων από τη σύναψη διπλωματικών σχέσεων μεταξύ της Κίνας και της Ελλάδας.

Στην εκδήλωση για την Εθνική Ημέρα της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας της Κίνας, παράλληλα με την Περιφέρεια Κρήτης βραβεύτηκαν 37 διακεκριμένοι Έλληνες από τους χώρους της πολιτικής, της επιστήμης, του αθλητισμού κ.α, για την συνεισφορά τους στην ενίσχυση της Ελληνοκινεζικής φιλίας.

Το Τιμητικό Βραβείο της Περιφέρειας Κρήτης με αποδέκτη τον Περιφερειάρχη Κρήτης Σταύρο Αρναουτάκη, παρέλαβε ο εκπρόσωπος του, ο Εντεταλμένος σύμβουλος Πολιτισμού και Απόδημου Ελληνισμού Κώστας Φασουλάκης. Ο εκπρόσωπος του Περιφερειάρχη κ. Φασουλάκης μετέφερε στον Πρέσβη που απένειμε το βραβείο, και στα στελέχη της Πρεσβείας, τον χαιρετισμό και τις ευχαριστίες του κ. Αρναουτάκη, ενώ σε δήλωση του, ανέφερε:

«Με πολύ χαρά παρέλαβα εκπροσωπώντας τον Περιφερειάρχη Κρήτης την τιμητική διάκριση που απένειμε η Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία της Κίνας στη Περιφέρεια Κρήτης και προσωπικά στον κ. Αρναουτάκη, για την συνεργασία που υπάρχει και για την αποτελεσματική συμβολή της Περιφέρειας Κρήτης στον απεγκλωβισμό χιλιάδων Κινέζων πολιτών από την εμπόλεμη ζώνη της Λιβύης το 2011. Η Περιφέρεια Κρήτης στοχεύει περεταίρω στην ενίσχυση της συνεργασίας με την Κίνα προς το κοινό όφελος, ενώ παράλληλα υπάρχει παραδοσιακά πολύχρονη φιλία».

Ο Υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου, κ. Νότης Μηταράκης, παραχώρησε συνέντευξη Τύπου στους διαπιστευμένους δημοσιογράφους και τους ανταποκριτές ξένου Τύπου



Συνέντευξη Τύπου έδωσε την Δευτέρα 26 Σεπτεμβρίου ο Υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου, κ. Νότης Μηταράκης προς τους διαπιστευμένους συντάκτες και τους ανταποκριτές ξένου Τύπου.

Ο κ. Μηταράκης αναφέρθηκε στις δράσεις του υπουργείου, την θωράκιση των συνόρων καθώς και τη συνεργασία με την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση σε θέματα μετανάστευσης επισημαίνοντας πως πέρσι καταγράφηκαν στη χώρα οι χαμηλότερες ροές της δεκαετίας και πως φέτος αναμένεται να είναι η δεύτερη καλύτερη χρονιά.

Αναφορικά με το περιστατικό στον Έβρο και τους 38 μετανάστες ο κ. Μηταράκης παρουσίασε φωτογραφίες από την τουρκική νησίδα στις οποίες φαινόταν πόσο κοντά ήταν αυτή και πόσο ρηχή ήταν η στάθμη του ποταμού.

Ο Υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου αναφέρθηκε, επίσης και στην θωράκιση των συνόρων και τις διασώσεις που έχει κάνει το Λιμενικό Σώμα, οι οποίες ανέρχονται τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2022 σε 1.361. Αναφορικά με τον Έβρο ο Υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου επεσήμανε πως θωρακίζεται με την επέκταση του φράχτη, ενώ αναβαθμίζονται και τα συστήματα παρακολούθησης και επιτήρησης.

Τη δυνατότητα στους κατοίκους ορεινών περιοχών της χώρας να προβούν, είτε οργανωμένα ως κοινότητα είτε ατομικά, στην υλοτόμηση ξυλείας, υπό την εποπτεία των οικείων δασικών υπηρεσιών, για να καλύψουν τις ανάγκες για τη χειμερινή περίοδο δίνει το Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, με σχετική εγκύκλιο που υπέγραψε ο Υφυπουργός Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, Γιώργος Αμυράς.

Υπενθυμίζεται ότι, ήδη, διατίθενται δωρεάν ή με συμβολικό αντίτιμο, καυσόξυλα από τους Δασικούς Συνεταιρισμούς Εργασίας (ΔΑΣΕ) προς τους κατοίκους σε όλη την Ελλάδα.

Φέτος, το Υπουργείο διέθεσε 4.500.000 ευρώ, που αποτελεί την υψηλότερη πίστωση της τελευταίας δεκαετίας, προς τις υπηρεσίες Επιθεώρησης Εφαρμογής Δασικής Πολιτικής: Μακεδονίας-Θράκης, Ηπείρου-Δυτικής Μακεδονίας, Θεσσαλίας-Στερεάς Ελλάδας, Πελοποννήσου-Δυτικής Ελλάδας και Ιονίου, για κάλυψη των ατομικών αναγκών των κατοίκων στις ορεινές περιοχές της χώρας.

Αναλυτικότερα, τα ποσά χρηματοδοτήσεων κατ’ έτος έχουν ως εξής:

2022: 4.500.000 €

2021: 3.500.000 €

2020: 3.000.000 €

2019: 680.000 €

2018: 480.000 €

2017: 457.000 €

2016: 907.500 €

2015: 1.100.000 €

2014: 90.000 €



Παράλληλα, το ΥΠΕΝ κατανοώντας ότι οι τρέχουσες συνθήκες δημιουργούν ανάγκη αναπροσαρμογής των τιμών υλοτομικών και λοιπών εργασιών προχωρά στις απαραίτητες ενέργειες για την αύξησή τους από το επόμενο διαχειριστικό έτος.

Ο Υφυπουργός Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας, Γιώργος Αμυράς, δήλωσε: «Η ενεργειακή κρίση που βιώνει η Ευρώπη και η Ελλάδα είναι πρωτοφανής, γι’ αυτό αυξήσαμε τη χρηματοδότηση την υλοτόμηση ξυλείας. Προχωρά η δωρεάν διάθεση καυσόξυλων στα ορεινά και παραδασόβια χωριά, ενώ τώρα δίνουμε τη δυνατότητα στους κατοίκους να υλοτομήσουν και οι ίδιοι ξυλεία για να ζεστάνουν τα σπίτια τους».

Redesignation Allows Additional Eligible Burmese Nationals to Apply for TPS and Employment Authorization Documents WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today announced an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Burma for an additional 18 months, from Nov. 26, 2022, through May 25, 2024, due to extraordinary and temporary conditions in Burma that prevent individuals from safely returning. In addition, DHS announced a redesignation of Burma for TPS for the same reason, allowing Burmese nationals (and individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Burma) residing in the United States as of Sept. 25, 2022, to be eligible for TPS.

CDFI Fund Announces FY 2022 CDFI Program and NACA Program Technical Assistance Awards September 26, 2022 Washington - Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) announced that 218 organizations received $27.57 million in Technical Assistance awards to build their capacity to provide services to low-income and underserved people and communities across America. The awards were made through the fiscal year (FY) 2022 funding round of the Community Development Financial Institutions Program (CDFI Program) and Native American CDFI Assistance Program (NACA Program). “I am pleased to announce the largest number of Technical Assistance awards in the history of the CDFI Program and NACA Program,” said CDFI Fund Director Jodie Harris. “The continuing high demand for funding for technical assistance reflects the urgent need that CDFIs are facing in their communities today. For this discussion they were joined by Mykola Solsky, Ukrainian Minister for Agrarian Policy and Food. Ministers moreover exchanged views on fishing opportunities for next year, including on fish stocks shared with the United Kingdom and EU-Norway annual consultations for 2023.
