Swedish Gripen jets practise landing on highways Swedish Air Force Gripen fighters practised the delicate art of landing on civilian highways during an exercise near Gothenburg, Sweden on 21 May 2024. Swedish fighter pilots learn how to land on civilian roads to give them extra flexibility in the event of a crisis. If airbases, airports or auxiliary landing strips are damaged or otherwise unavailable, the JAS 39 Gripen fighters can land on roads that have been deliberately engineered to accommodate landings by fighter jets. Once on the ground, the Gripens make use of a mobile forward arming and refuelling point (FARP), gassing up in a matter of minutes before taking off again. The Gripen is Sweden’s premier multirole fighter, with a reinforced landing gear that props the plane high enough above the asphalt to prevent debris from getting sucked down the jet intake. More than 100 advocates from coast-to-coast participated in another successful annual AHEPA Family Capitol Hill Day, May 23, 2024, announced Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos. The AHEPA family advocates walked the halls of Congress and met or engaged with an estimated 80 congressional offices to discuss the foreign and domestic policy priorities that are vital to the AHEPA family’s mission. These include: strong U.S. relations with Greece and Cyprus, holding Turkey accountable for its illegal and provocative actions that are not in the U.S. interests, and strong investment for affordable housing for older adults and programs that provides lifesaving services to survivors of domestic violence and their families. The top objectives of the day, however, was working to grow the Congressional Hellenic Caucus and garnering support for legislation to strengthen the U.S.-Cyprus strategic partnership in this, the year the community marks the 50th dark anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion and ongoing occupation of the Republic of Cyprus. The day began with the traditional taking of the group photo on the steps of the U.S. Capitol followed by a Kick-Off orientation reception and briefing that included remarks delivered by members of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues: Co-Chair Chris Pappas (D-NH) and Vice-Chairs Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) and Dina Titus (D-NV), and Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-NY). “On behalf of the AHEPA family, I want to sincerely thank the advocates who took the time out of their business and personal schedules to walk the halls of Congress, knock on doors, and deliver a strong message to policymakers that the American Hellenic community is active and engaged in the policies, foreign and domestic, that matter most to our mission and our community,” Tsivicos said. Since its establishment in 1922, AHEPA has actively promoted good citizenship and community service initiatives, both within the United States and later on, internationally. Since its inception in 1927, the banquet has honored those who dedicate themselves to the promotion of good citizenship, a basic tenant of the Ancient Hellenic ideals. The Supreme President of the Order of AHEPA, Savas C. Tsivicos, expressed his elation in addressing the assembled crowd, stating, “AHEPA is here not only to honor our award recipients but also to pay tribute to the legacy of our forefathers. Their vision and dedication built AHEPA and established this extraordinary event, which we have proudly hosted for nearly 100 years since its inception in 1927. We thank our honorees for their dedication and service to America and the world.” The Order of AHEPA presented their highest and most coveted award, the 2024 AHEPA Socrates Award to Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD), an award which his late father U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes received in 1997. This marked the first time a father and son (both members of AHEPA) received the same award. Photos by Bill Petros The organization also honored Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), as well as U.S. Representatives Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH) and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) with the 2024 AHEPA Pericles Award. The Pericles award is presented to individuals in the government for their undying commitment to serving the public and to our nation and communities. Members of AHEPA from the United States, Canada, and Europe as well as the families of the evening’s honorees filled the ballroom to capacity. Additionally, AHEPA was honored to have over 28 distinguished members of Congress who serve on the 94-member strong Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Affairs visit the VIP reception prior to the banquet.  The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was FOX News Chief Washington Correspondent and AHEPA member Mike Emanuel.  Presenters included AHEPA life member, philanthropist George M. Marcus, Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), who is also an active member of the organization, and Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV) a member of the AHEPA family. The event commenced with a moving presentation of the national colors by the U.S. Marine Honor guard and the National Anthems of the U.S. and Greece by the U.S. Army ensemble band. In a surprise moment, AHEPA bestowed the first ever Presidential Volunteer Service Award to George M. Marcus for a lifetime of service to the Greek and American Communities across the United States. This award is a distinguished national honor recognizing exceptional volunteer service. Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, in Philadelphia, to discuss shared priorities, including labour rights, economic prosperity, and climate action.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Governor Shapiro underscored the deep economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties that unite Canada and Pennsylvania. In 2023, two-way trade between our country and the state exceeded US$27 billion, and Canadian-owned companies employed over 30,300 workers in Pennsylvania. Today, Pennsylvania sells more goods to Canada than to its next four largest foreign markets combined.

The Prime Minister and the Governor emphasized the urgent need for accelerating climate action and transitioning to clean energy sources. They agreed on the importance of investing in green infrastructure, promoting renewable energy development, and creating good-paying jobs in the emerging clean economy.

The two leaders welcomed opportunities for continued collaboration between the Government of Canada and Pennsylvania to further their shared goals of economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social progress for all.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Governor Shapiro agreed to remain in close contact.
