The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence:
“Two hundred years ago today, Brazil gained its independence. Today, we join Brazilian communities in Canada and around the globe in celebrating this important milestone and recognizing the many contributions Brazilian people have made around the world.
“Relations between Canada and Brazil can be traced to 1866, before Confederation, when the first Canadian trade office opened in Brazil. Our diplomatic ties were officially established with the opening of the Brazilian embassy in Ottawa in 1941 and our embassy in Brazil three years later. During the Second World War, Canadian and Brazilian soldiers fought as partners to help liberate Europe from Nazi Germany, creating strong bonds between our two countries that endure to this day.
“Over the years, the bonds between Canada and Brazil have been further strengthened through partnership in regional and multilateral institutions such as the G20, the Organization of American States, and the United Nations. We also collaborate on a range of issues, including supporting refugees and migrants to promote peace and stability throughout the Americas, expanding trade and investment to foster economic growth and benefit everyone, and promoting agricultural innovation to support food security globally.
“Our two countries are united by strong people-to-people ties, with more than 120,000 people of Brazilian descent living in Canada today. Their many contributions to our social, cultural, and economic fabric help make Canada stronger, more diverse, and more inclusive. Canada is also proud to be one of the top destinations for young Brazilians choosing to study abroad, and we are committed to further strengthening academic and scientific exchanges between our two countries.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating Brazil’s Independence Day.
“Feliz Dia da Independência!”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada’s longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“For most Canadians, we have known no other Sovereign. Queen Elizabeth II was a constant presence in our lives. Time and again, Her Majesty marked Canada’s modern history. Over the course of 70 years and twenty-three Royal Tours, Queen Elizabeth II saw this country from coast to coast to coast and was there for our major, historical milestones.
“She would proclaim ‘it was good to be home’ when returning to her beloved Canada. She was indeed at home here, and Canadians never ceased to return her affection.
“Her Majesty vowed to devote her life to the service of the Commonwealth and its people. On behalf of all Canadians, I thank Queen Elizabeth II for honouring this vow and for a lifetime of service.
“Her Majesty’s reign spanned so many decades – a period when we came into our own as a confident, diverse, and forward-looking country. It is her wisdom, compassion, and warmth that we will always remember and cherish.
“Today, a page has not only been turned, but a chapter in our shared history has drawn to a close. I know Her Majesty’s service to Canada and Canadians will forever remain an important part of our country’s history. The coming days will be a period of mourning for Canadians, as it will be for all Commonwealth citizens, ending with a national day of mourning when a commemorative service will be held to mark the passing of our Sovereign.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I express our heartfelt condolences to members of the Royal Family during this most difficult time.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on International Literacy Day:
“Today, on International Literacy Day, we raise awareness of the importance of being able to read and write, and we recognize all those who work tirelessly to make sure education is accessible for everyone, both at home and abroad.
“This year’s theme, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’, invites us to ensure people around the world can access quality, equitable, and inclusive education. Literacy provides a foundation for lifelong success. By embracing a variety of learning spaces – including digital learning spaces – we can reduce barriers to learning, encourage ongoing education, and ensure no one is left behind.
“Last year, the Government of Canada introduced the Skills for Success program, which helps adult Canadians improve their literacy, numeracy, and digital skills so they can succeed in today’s and tomorrow’s economy. As we recover from the COVID‑19 pandemic, we will continue to create new training opportunities for Canadians and build a stronger workforce from coast to coast to coast.
“As Co-Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocates Group, I am working to advance quality education and gender equality at home and abroad. As a result of the pandemic, nearly 24 million learners worldwide might never return to formal education, including 11 million young women and girls. To promote access to quality education and lifelong learning for children and youth who are refugees, experience other forms of displacement, or are living in host communities, the Government of Canada launched the Together for Learning campaign in 2021. Our efforts are helping address the gender gap in literacy and achieving increases in literacy rates where they are most needed.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I thank all those who work to promote and improve access to quality education, here in Canada and around the world. Literacy is a fundamental human right, and we will continue to work to close the gaps in access to education and build a better, fairer, and more prosperous future for everyone.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Nayrouz
September 11, 2022
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Nayrouz:
“Today, Coptic Orthodox Christians in Canada and around the world will celebrate the Feast of Nayrouz – also known as the Feast of Rivers – and welcome the Coptic New Year.
“Nayrouz marks the beginning of Thout, the first month of the Coptic calendar. On this day, many Coptic communities will come together to pray, exchange gifts, reflect, and celebrate the year to come.
“Ancient Egyptians saw Nayrouz as a day of thanksgiving to welcome the rising waters of the Nile, which provided essential irrigation for crops. Nowadays, Nayrouz serves as a reminder of the persecution Copts endured under Roman rule. In the face of oppression, Coptic communities showed resilience and dedication to their faith. Today, they continue to serve as an example to Coptic Christians and many others around the world.
“This year, the celebrations are marked with sadness and remembrance, following the tragic fire that occurred at the Coptic Abu Sifin church in Giza, Egypt, on August 14, which took the life of dozens of worshippers, including children.
“On this day, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the long and rich history of Coptic Christians and to recognize the many contributions they have made, and continue to make, to Canada. Today, we recommit ourselves to the values of peace, safety, and freedom of expression and religion or belief we share, which keep our country strong, open, and inclusive.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating Nayrouz.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the National Day of Service:
“Twenty-one years ago today, the world witnessed the deadliest terrorist attacks in the history of the United States of America, our closest neighbour and ally.
“Today, we pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of this tragedy from more than 50 countries, including 24 Canadians, and the thousands more who were injured. We offer our condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones. Our thoughts are also with all those who continue to live with the pain and trauma caused by these horrific events.
“That day and in the days that followed, firefighters, paramedics, police officers, military personnel, and ordinary people risked their lives to save others. Amidst the attacks and destruction, these heroes demonstrated countless acts of service, bravery, and resilience. Today, we thank them and the many first responders who put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep Canadians safe.
“On this National Day of Service, we are reminded of the generosity shown in the face of tragedy. We think about people and communities across Canada, like Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, where residents provided stranded airline passengers with warm meals, clean bedding, and hot showers, and converted schools, churches, and community halls into temporary homes. Their hospitality showed the world what it means to be Canadian and reminds us that, when we come together, we get through the darkest of times.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage Canadians to take part in acts of service today to honour those who bravely and selflessly helped others on 9/11. We will never forget.”
