Presidency press release - Informal meeting of competitiveness ministers in Prague (Czech Republic), 19-20 July 2022
An informal meeting of European competitiveness ministers (internal market and industry) was hosted by the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU on 19 and 20 July in Prague. Ministers discussed increasing the added value, innovation and competitiveness of the entire EU across regions.
Ministers for the Internal Market and Industry met in Prague
An informal meeting of EU competitiveness ministers (internal market and industry) chaired by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Jozef Síkela took place in Prague on 19-20 July 2022.
An informal meeting of EU competitiveness (internal market and industry) ministers chaired by the Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela took place in Prague. The main topic was increasing the added value, innovation and competitiveness of the entire EU across regions. The main emphasis was placed especially on regions that, according to the Regional Innovation Score, lag behind the best, which are often rural regions or geographically remote regions.
„We discussed how to use the ongoing transformation of industry to help lagging regions in development, i.e. in particular in attracting industry with a higher added value” says Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela, adding: „This is in line with our presidential priority to strengthen the strategic resilience of the EU economy.”
Delegates from the countries of the EU, the European Economic Area, together with representatives of the European Commission also addressed ongoing transformations in the EU economy. The processes of decarbonisation, digitalisation, building resilience and open strategic autonomy lead Europe to reflect on how it is linked to global value chains and to the effort to reduce its strategic dependencies. For regions still lagging behind, this is an opportunity to join emerging value chains for strategic products (hydrogen, batteries, chips, etc.) at more lucrative levels of the value chain, such as research, development or marketing.
For part of the meeting, the ministers were divided into three workshops, where they discussed the internal market as an opportunity for the regions, the digitalization and decarbonization of lagging regions, as well as the resilience of the internal market in the context of the war in Ukraine. The workshops were also attended by guests from business and academia.
