9 Woman
When a blank sheet of paper starts its journey from an idea to a fabric and then transforms into a garment, the hand of the creator is led by a higher force. Only they know. When designing garments for women, how do designers look at who might wear them? What kind of charisma do these women have? What are they like?
We asked 9 Portuguese designers to choose 9 women. No requirements. Just women. Charismatic, strong and independent women. Ana Sofia Martins, Ana Tang, Cristina Filipe, Gaya de Medeiros, Isabel Branco, Laura Rueff, Sara Carvalho, Vera Deus and Vitória Mota were the designers chosen by Luís Carvalho, Joana Duarte (Béhen), Lidija Kolovrat, Nuno Baltazar, Luís Buchinho, Dino Alves, Davii, Arndes and Pedro Pedro. On the following pages, they are the living showcases of various garments created with love.
ÍMPAR Market: creativity and design land in Lisbon
To create a unique event that celebrates the creativity and talent of independent brands. This is the motto of Mafalda Patrício and Rita Montezuma the two influencers who are launching ÍMPAR Market this week. On the 7th and 8th of December, Lisbon’s LxFactory will host the first edition of an event that brings together more than 70 brands in the same space.
Yes She Can
As entrepreneurs, artisans and creatives, these women put everything they are into everything they do. From food to pastries to wines, they excel in their fields and outdo themselves every day, with boldness of spirit, hard work and merit, in a world that increasingly belongs to them.
Catarina Nascimento
A proud resident of Chaves and fierce defender of the Trás-os-Montes region, Catarina Nascimento, aged 40, returned to the city to open the 83 Gastrobar, a restaurant that is ‘humble and unpretentious, cosy and welcoming, with no secrets or tricks’.
Maria Aguiar
Maria Aguiar, 34, grew up in the Douro, in her grandparents’ house, the Quinta de Villa Franca, a ‘typical small wine grower’ in the region.
Verónica Dias
For Verónica Dias, 31, co-owner of Brites in Porto, bread was her launch pad into the baking and pastry business. ‘I started out in catering where everything revolved around bread: bread as a concept, as sharing, as a way of meeting’, she says.
Inês Pando
She has always loved to eat and that is half the reason she fell in love with cooking, even though she didn’t have any training in the area and was a bit too lazy to cook at home. ‘
Woman of Soul
Every magazine, every project has a page, a paragraph, a sentence, that explains who we are, what we do, what moves us, our vision of the world and where we want to go. Because we are many. We’re dozens, we’d say. In an issue dedicated to women’s power, we would like to introduce you to two women who have been involved in Portuguese Soul from the very beginning. Women who are a reference in their fields, who are part of a complex industry, and who are helping to take Soul to the next level. This is our way of openly showing how much we admire them.
Leadership in Heels
In the business world, which is mostly made up of men, being a woman entrepreneur still seems to be a major challenge. According to the November 2022 Statistical Bulletin — the latest data available — from the Portuguese Government’s Commission for Gender Equality, ‘women hold fewer senior positions than men’. It continues, ‘from 2020 to 2021 there was a significant increase of 1pp in both men and women in leadership positions. But in 2021 there was still a gap of 2.1pp in favour of men, 0.4pp less than in 2016’, the document concluded.
