In each of Dave's works, I see a recurring tension between our own ambitions and our duties to our families and societies. It's a tension that anyone who is working for change knows well. But the reason I wanted to speak to Dave isn't just because I like his books; it's because of his example. After finding literary success, he did something bigger than write his next book. He founded a literary journal to lift up the voices of other talented authors. He began a tutoring academy, 826 Valencia, that has helped underprivileged children across the country discover their own love of the written word. And just this year, he hosted the International Congress of Youth Voices, bringing young writers from around the world together to learn from accomplished writers and elected officials. Plus, he's a Bulls fan.
