Media Registration Opens for Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in Arequipa
Issued by the APEC Secretariat
Media registration is open for the 2024 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting to be hosted by Peru on 17-18 May.
The meeting includes trade ministers from 21 APEC member economies and will be chaired by Elizabeth Galdo Marín, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Arequipa, a city in the Southern Coastal region of Peru. The policy focus will be centered around accelerating APEC actions to address the informal sector within member economies and to review key areas and measures that could be integrated into a roadmap for transitioning to the formal within the global context.
Leading the forum under the 2024 theme of “Empower. Include. Grow.,” Peru is organizing APEC’s agenda this year around three policy priorities: 1) trade and investment for inclusive and interconnected growth; 2) innovation and digitalization to promote transition to the formal and global economy; and 3) sustainable growth for resilient development.
Preceding the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting will be the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Women and the Economy to be hosted by Peru’s Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations, Angela Teresa Hernández on 16 May.
Following that, a first-ever joint meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and Ministers of Women will be held, co-chaired by Minister Marín and Minister Hernández. At this meeting, ministers will develop new initiatives that further empower women in trade, including enhancing the capacity of women-led and/or women-owned small businesses.
Officials from APEC members will also convene in Arequipa from 4 to 16 May for a series of sectoral meetings, advancing the forum’s agenda to develop human resources and closing the skills gap, expand information and communication technology infrastructure and services in the region, as well as strengthen emergency preparedness to better mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and natural disaster.
