Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the results of the Australian general election

May 18, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the result of the Australian general election:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the Liberal Party’s leader, Scott Morrison, on his electoral victory. He is now entrusted with the important task of forming the next government of Australia.
“I look forward to working closely with Mr. Morrison to address issues of importance to Canadians and Australians, including promoting free and open global trade, fighting climate change, and eliminating violent extremism.
“Canada and Australia enjoy a lasting friendship built on historic ties and shared values. We are close partners in the Asia-Pacific region, and were among the first countries to adopt the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership—an agreement that is creating good, middle class jobs and new opportunities for people in both our countries.
“Our two countries collaborate closely through organizations like the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the G20, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. We stand united in defense of global institutions, standards, and rules. We are also steadfast partners in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, and in the promotion of greater peace and stability around the world.
“Together, we will make our relationship even stronger, and continue to create new opportunities for Australians and Canadians alike.”

May 19, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Vesak:
“Today, we join Buddhists in Canada and around the world to celebrate Vesak.

“Vesak is an important reminder that we can all put these teachings into practice in our daily lives, and help build a better, more open and inclusive world.
“Today, I invite all Canadians to honour Buddhist communities and their important contributions to our country. On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish a peaceful and happy Vesak to all those observing this sacred day.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on the 10th anniversary of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka

May 18, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the anniversary of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka:
“Today marks the 10th anniversary of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. Over 26 years of war, including during the last phase of the war in Mullivaikal in 2009, tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands more displaced and disappeared, leaving lasting wounds in communities across the country.
“Over the past decade, I have met many Tamil-Canadians personally affected by the war. Their stories – of incalculable loss, tremendous adversity, and continued resilience – serve as a stark reminder of the long road ahead to peace and reconciliation.
“I reiterate my call to the Government of Sri Lanka to fulfill its international and domestic commitments to establish a meaningful accountability process that has the trust and confidence of the survivors. Canada continues to offer its full support to the Government of Sri Lanka and all those working toward accountability, justice, peace, and reconciliation on the island.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my deepest sympathies to Tamil-Canadians, and to all those who suffered and lost loved ones during the war. We also pause to remember the many people in Sri Lanka and around the world affected by the devastating terrorist attacks on hotels and churches on Easter Sunday. We will always stand against such acts of hate, and work to make sure everyone can practice their faith in freedom.
“Today, I invite all Canadians to recognize the many contributions that Tamil-Canadians have made to our country and the adversity they have overcome.”

Statement by the Prime Minister welcoming the decision by the United States to remove tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum

May 17, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to welcome the decision by the United States to remove tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum:
“Today’s decision by the United States to remove tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum is terrific news for Canadian steel and aluminum workers, their families, and many communities across the country.
“Over the last several months, I have met with Canadian steel and aluminum workers, including in Regina, Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, and the Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean region of Québec. They are at the heart of Canada’s world-class steel and aluminum industry, which creates thousands of good, middle class jobs and supports tens of thousands of families.
“When the U.S. imposed tariffs, we stood up for Canada’s economy and our steel and aluminum workers and their families. We immediately retaliated dollar-for-dollar – the strongest retaliation in the world. We stood firm and would not back down until we achieved today’s outcome. As a result of today’s decision by the United States, Canada will lift its retaliatory tariffs.
“This decision reflects what is known to be true by friends on both sides of the border: Canada has been America’s most steadfast ally for more than a hundred years, and our long-standing partnership and closely linked economies make us more competitive around the world and improve our combined security.
“The commercial and people-to-people ties we enjoy – combined with our shared values, geography, and common interests – are of vital importance, especially in an evolving global economy. With this decision, Canadian and American businesses can get back to what they do best – working constructively together to the benefit of our economies, our people, and our communities.
“I thank Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and the entire Canadian negotiating team who have been working extremely hard over the last year to reach this desired result.
“To the workers and businesses at the heart of Canada’s world-class steel and aluminum industries: We will always stand up for you and your families. Every day, you contribute to the well-being and prosperity of communities across the country. What matters most is that you are able to keep our economy growing, and create the good, middle class jobs we need now and in the future.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia

May 17, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia:
“Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, we come together to call for a world where we can all live with respect, safety, and freedom – no matter who we love or how we identify.
“This year’s national theme is, ‘Online violence has real consequences.’ For many LGBTQ2 people, online platforms provide supportive and inclusive spaces where everyone is free to be who they are and express themselves. But these online spaces are often targets for bullying and harassment. Online services providers are taking action, but we must do more to stop the spread of online violence and hate.
“We all have a role to play to make sure LGBTQ2 people feel safe and can participate fully in Canadian society. The Government of Canada is working with LGBTQ2 communities and organizations in Canada and around the world to break down barriers and make equality a reality.
“Every day, advocates and organizations – like Fondation Émergence, which created the first day against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia in 2003 – bring Canadians together in the fight against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia. To help address the unique needs of LGBTQ2 Canadians, and the persisting disparities they face, Budget 2019 committed additional support for the community-level organizations leading the work to bring about change.
“Beyond our borders, we are helping to fund and support Canadian organizations that are advancing human rights and improving the quality of life for LGBTQ2 people in developing countries. Canada will continue to advocate for LGBTQ2 rights, including through our leadership as the current co-chair of the Equal Rights Coalition. These measures are important steps toward eliminating the barriers faced by LGBTQ2 communities around the world.
“This year, we mark 50 years since the partial decriminalization of homosexuality, one step in the ongoing battle for equality for LGBTQ2 communities in Canada. To commemorate the milestone anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint launched a new $1 ‘Equality’ coin. The coin recognizes the progress we have made to recognize and protect the rights of LGBTQ2 Canadians, and values of diversity, inclusion, and equality that continue to drive this work and define our country.
“Today, and every day, I encourage Canadians to strive for a future where everyone – regardless of their gender expression, gender identity, or sexual orientation – can live in equality and freedom.”

Canada joins Christchurch Call to Action to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online

May 15, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario
The internet bridges divides and helps us build a more open, inclusive world. But it has also increasingly become a tool for terrorism and violent extremism. The March 2019 terror attack in Christchurch was a harrowing reminder that we need to take coordinated action to prevent social media and other online platforms from being used as a tool to incite, publish and promote terrorism, violence, and hatred.
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, President of France Emmanuel Macron, other government leaders, and industry leaders to adopt the Christchurch Call to Action – a global pledge to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.
Through the Christchurch Call, governments and online services providers are making voluntary, collective commitments to prevent people from abusing the internet to promote and sensationalize acts of terrorism. These commitments include:
  • Building more inclusive, resilient communities to counter violent radicalization
  • Enforcing laws that stop the production and dissemination of terrorist and extremist content online
  • Encouraging media to apply ethical rules when reporting on terrorist events to avoid amplifying terrorist and violent extremist content
Many of the Christchurch commitments match the priorities of the National Strategy on Countering Radicalization to Violence, which the Government of Canada launched in December 2018. Through the National Strategy and the Christchurch Call, the Government of Canada will continue to provide international leadership on countering radicalization to violence and eliminating terrorist and violent extremist content online.

Quote

“Terrorist and extremist content online continues to spill out into the real world with deadly consequences. Today, we are stepping up to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online. Together, we can create a world where all people – no matter their faith, where they live, or where they are from – are safe and secure both on and offline.”
The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Quick Facts

  • The Canada Centre for Community Engagement and Prevention of Violence leads the Government of Canada’s efforts to counter radicalization to violence, and works with all levels of government, not-for-profit organizations, communities, youth, frontline practitioners, academia, law enforcement, and international organizations.
  • Radicalization to violence happens when a person or group takes on extremist beliefs that lead them to promote violence and, possibly, taking part in terrorist activity.

Prime Minister announces advisory board to select the next Supreme Court justice

May 15, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario

The Government of Canada is committed to appointing Supreme Court of Canada Justices in a way that is transparent, inclusive, and accountable to Canadians.
That is why, in 2016, the Government of Canada launched a new process that tasked an independent and non-partisan Advisory Board with identifying suitable candidates who are jurists of the highest caliber, functionally bilingual, and representative of the diversity of Canada.
Under Canada’s Constitution, at least three of the Supreme Court judges are to be appointed from among the judges of the Quebec Court of Appeal or Superior Court, or among advocates of the province. As such, the Government of Canada indicated at the time of launching the new process in 2016 that the composition of the Advisory Board would be adapted in filling these three seats to take into account the province’s civil law tradition.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec have now agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding that creates an Advisory Board for Quebec that reflects its unique legal tradition and ensures greater participation by its government in the selection process of judges from the province.
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, also announced the members of the Advisory Board for Quebec, who will recommend candidates to fill the vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of Justice Clément Gascon.
The Advisory Board for Quebec will review applications and submit a shortlist of highly qualified candidates for consideration by the Prime Minister.

Quote

“The Supreme Court of Canada is recognized internationally as a strong, independent judicial institution. I am confident that the Advisory Board will recommend only the most exceptional individuals – who reflect Quebec’s historic representation on the court and its civil law tradition – to hold the honour of being named to Canada’s top court.”
