Report highlights – December 2024

  • Agricultural productivity growth is challenged by climate change and its impacts on key natural resources.
  • The EU improves self-sufficiency for main commodities and remains a net agri-food exporter, with a shift towards higher-value products.
  • Consumer preferences are shifting towards proteins such as poultry and pulses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and reduced wine consumption.
  • EU agriculture improves its environmental and climate performance, with reductions in greenhouse gases, ammonia emissions, and nitrogen surplus.

Production:
+1% annual increase in value of agricultural production in nominal terms.
 Food security:
Above 100% self-sufficiency levels for soft wheat, barley, meat, and dairy products.
 Environment:
4% reduction in Nitrous oxide and 8% reduction in methane emissions between 2017 and 2035.
