SAR Data Help Keep Alaskans Safe

As winter ice in Alaska breaks up, areas of open water can be difficult to see—but not to synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Fresh Eyes on Ice, a NASA-funded project, uses SAR data and citizen scientists to assess ice cover and increase community awareness of hazardous conditions.

The upcoming NASA/ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) SAR (NISAR) mission
will generate more data than any previous NASA Earth observation mission.

image of eclipse over the USTotal Solar Eclipse over North America

A rare total solar eclipse passed over a large swath of the U.S. on April 8—and the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) aboard the GOES-East satellite was 22,236 miles above Earth’s equator to record the event. NASA sounding rockets and airborne instruments collected additional data during the eclipse.
