NATO’s Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) and US Army Europe and Africa (USAEURAF) recently demonstrated a low-cost counter-UAS (Unmanned Aircraft system) system procured by Poland and Romania to defend their airspace.
Polish, Romanian, and US forces demonstrated the system, called Merops. Launched from the back of a pickup truck, the drone can seek out targets autonomously using radio frequency, radar guidance or thermal signatures.
USAEURAF loaned dozens of Merops interceptors and ground control stations to Poland and Romania as part of Eastern Sentry, a defensive activity declared by Allies following the 9 September violation of Poland's airspace by more than 20 drones.
