Francophone countries reflect strategically on their trade priorities
Representatives from French-speaking African and Indian Ocean WTO Members met for a regional consultation in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 28 to 30 April, with the aim of defining their trade priorities one year ahead of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), which is also scheduled to be held in Yaoundé in March 2026. “MC14 must serve as a launch pad for a better future,” said Cameroon's Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, host of MC14, during the opening ceremony.

Agriculture Chair urges innovative approaches to move talks forward
Members should strive to avoid repeating previous mistakes and explore innovative approaches on agriculture leading up to the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) in March 2026, said the newly appointed Chair of the agriculture negotiations, Ambassador Ali Sarfraz Hussain of Pakistan. At a meeting of the Committee on Agriculture on 30 April, members noted that agriculture remains a priority and stressed that MC14 should play a pivotal role in advancing the negotiations.

Steering Committee of Partenariat pour le Coton addresses priorities for cotton sector
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) hosted a Steering Committee meeting of the Partenariat pour le Coton initiative at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on 28-29 April. Building on a series of national consultations held last year in the Cotton 4+ countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire), the meeting marked a significant step towards consolidating investment priorities and developing ten-year national and regional strategies to strengthen cotton value chains.
