Sweden’s impact on NATO

In March 2024, Sweden ended 200 years of military neutrality when it joined the NATO alliance. But in what ways does this Nordic country add to NATO’s strength? Hint: there are many!

As the nation with the longest Baltic Sea coastline and strategic proximity to the Arctic, Sweden’s geography alone makes it a key contributor to Euro-Atlantic security. But its contributions go beyond location. With a highly advanced military, a strong defence industry and a history of cooperation with NATO forces, Sweden brings valuable knowledge, innovation and experience to the Alliance.

US Air Force bombers train over Europe during Bomber Task Force rotation

German Eurofighters patrol the Baltic skies from Latvia

Four B-52 Stratofortress bombers assigned to Bomber Task Force Europe - a rotating deployment of heavy bombers from the US to Europe - have been flying training missions from RAF Fairford in England.

During these training missions, the bombers practice actual missions they might be called upon to perform in a crisis situation – like working with Allied Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) to provide Close Air Support for friendly troops in combat. As they fly over Europe, the B-52s are escorted by Allied fighters, giving them a chance to practice flying alongside the bombers.

Bomber Task Force Europe rotations began in 2018 to provide bomber crews invaluable opportunities to train with air and ground forces from other NATO countries. Rotations can deploy to air bases in several Allied countries, including Norway, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom.

For this rotation, bombers from the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, based at Minot Air Force Base in the US, deployed to RAF Fairford in the UK.

Britain's only woman Royal Navy Commando

Royal Navy Commandos are among the toughest soldiers, sailors and marines in the United Kingdom, having earned their badges only after completing an arduous qualification course. It takes physical endurancemental toughness and no shortage of courage to qualify, and don the famous green beret of the UK Commandos.

Meet Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, the only woman currently serving as a Commando in the Royal Navy.

While training to be a pilot in the Commando Helicopter Force, Fisher completed the 16-week All Arms Commando Course (AACC), which culminated in a 30-foot rope climb and 30-mile run. She’s one of only seven women in the history of the United Kingdom’s armed forces to earn the badge.
