Agenda highlights - Economic and Financial Affairs Council, 18 February 2025

 

Ministers will hold a policy debate on competitiveness and regulatory burden reduction and the Commission will present the Competitiveness Compass initiative. Ministers will take note of the state of play of the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The Council aims to approve its guidelines for the EU’s annual budget for 2026. It aims to adopt conclusions on the Alert Mechanism Report 2025 and agree on the 2025 recommendation on the economic policy of the euro area. The Council is expected to adopt recommendations regarding medium-term fiscal-structural plans and on correcting excessive deficit situations in member states. The Council is expected to approve modified recovery and resilience plans, submitted by some member states. The Council aims to adopt a revised EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions in the field of taxation.

Media advisory – ConSIMium: Council simulation organised by the GSC for students in higher education, 20 February 2025

 

ConSIMium is a Council simulation organised by the GSC for students in higher education.

The third edition of ConSIMium will take place in the Council premises on 20-21 February 2025.

It will host teams of six students, selected at national level and accompanied by a national coordinator, from all 27 member states, for a total of 189 participants.

The students will simulate a sequence of five meetings (European Council, two parallel working parties, COREPER and Council).

Read-out of the meeting between the President of the European Council António Costa, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of Ukraine Volodymir Zelenskyy

 

On Friday 14 February, in Munich, the President of the European Council António Costa and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen had a meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymir Zelenskyy.

President Costa and President von der Leyen to a continued and stable support to Ukraine until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached.

They underlined that only such a peace would lead to a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine and guarantee Ukraine's and Europe's security.

They expressed the willingness to put Ukraine in a position of strength ahead of any future negotiations and that Ukraine is provided with strong security guarantees.

They stressed the need for Europeans to increase their defence spending and strengthen their defence capabilities  and help reinforce the Ukrainian armed forces.

Finally, President Costa and President von der Leyen stressed their willingness to step up the work to accelerate the accession process of Ukraine to the European Union.
