NATO Defence Ministers to advance work on deterrence and defence, support to Ukraine and global partnerships

As NATO Defence Ministers prepare to meet at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Thursday and Friday (17-18 October 2024), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte previewed the expected outcomes of the meeting in a press conference at NATO Headquarters.

NATO Secretary General welcomes Sweden’s plans to boost defence spending

On Wednesday 16 October, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to discuss the strengthening of NATO’s deterrence and defence and NATO’s increased support to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General praises Latvia for its contributions to NATO

On Wednesday 16 October 2024, at his official residence in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Prime Minister of Latvia Evika Siliņa to discuss further strengthening NATO’s defences and NATO’s continued support to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General meets the Prime Minister of Latvia

On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will receive the Prime Minister of Latvia, Ms Evika Siliņa, at his official residence in Brussels.

Media coverage

  • The event will be open solely to media representatives with annual accreditation to NATO. Those wishing to attend the event should share their interest to NatoAccreditations@hq.nato.int no later than Tuesday, 15 October 2024, at 12:00 (CEST).
  • Due to very limited space for media, the accreditation will be granted only to a small media pool, on a first come first served basis.
  • A security check will take place and all equipment and personal effects carried onto the site will be examined by security personnel and canine teams. Media representatives are therefore encouraged to arrive by 8:30 (CEST), allowing for sufficient lead time for security proceedings.
  • The event will be streamed live on X @NATOPress and on the NATO website. A transcript of the Secretary General’s remarks, as well as photographs, will be on the NATO website.

NATO Acting Deputy Secretary General to visit Latvia

On Saturday, 19 October 2024, NATO Acting Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Boris Ruge, will travel to Riga, Latvia.

Ambassador Ruge will participate in the Riga Conference, speaking on a panel entitled: “NATO’s 360-Degree Strategy and Strategic Partnerships”.

He will also meet with Latvian senior officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Baiba Braže, and the Minister of Defence, Mr Andris Sprūds.

NATO Secretary General meets the Prime Minister of Sweden

On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will receive the Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr Ulf Kristersson, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

  • Media representatives who have annual accreditation to NATO for 2024 can attend the joint press conference in person.
  • Media representatives without annual accreditation, who have successfully accredited for an event at HQ in 2024, and who are interested in covering the event should email NatoAccreditations@hq.nato.int no later than midday on Tuesday, 15 October.
  • The pool of visual media covering the official handshake will meet in front of the Press Shop at NATO HQ at 12:30.

Securing Britain’s and NATO’s digital supply chains

In his first press conference following the elections, the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stressed the UK’s “unshakable” commitment to NATO and that his government’s “first duty” must be security and defence. As part of this commitment, a significant focus should be placed on securing Britain’s and other NATO Allies’ digital supply chains against stepped up cyber attacks by threat actors determined to breach our critical national infrastructure.
