An Open-Source Approach to Cloud-Based Science Workflows NASA Openscapes supports scientists moving their scientific workflows to the cloud. After working with NASA mentors to become familiar with the cloud, Openscapes participants use this knowledge to set up their own cloud-based workflows.           Open Release of Prithvi-Weather-Climate Foundation Model NASA’s Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team (IMPACT) and IBM Research openly released a new foundation model for weather and climate on Hugging Face. Prithvi is the Sanskrit name of Earth and joins other foundation models developed through the IMPACT/IBM Research collaboration.           ICESat-2 Braves a Solar Storm An intense geomagnetic storm blasted Earth in May 2024 and (briefly) disrupted operations for several Earth observation platforms. Read how scientists and engineers worked to restore data from NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2).           The Data Behind Debby (and Other Rainfall and Temperature Events) The August surface temperature and precipitation data summary shows heavy rainfall from Hurricane Debby along the U.S. East Coast, while portions of the Sahara Desert experienced wetter-than-normal conditions. Using Commercial Small Satellite (SmallSat) Data from Planet Recorded September 25, 2024           Data acquired by constellations of SmallSats operated by commercial vendor Planet have been purchased by NASA for use by approved researchers. This webinar provides information about Planet data and resources available through NASA’s Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition (CSDA) program.                     Analyzing Earth Science Datasets in Three Dimensions October 16, 2024 The Field Campaign Explorer (FCX) is a cloud-based visualization and analysis system that enables users to display multiple datasets at the same time in three dimensions. Read summaries of the latest data products, services, and tools released over the past month.           Illustrating Hydrologic Processes Using Panoply and Giovanni Hydrology data are highlighted in this fourth article describing how to combine Giovanni data maps with data line plots created using NASA Panoply. Use cases include examining differences in soil moisture in the U.S. state of Texas in May 2024.                   OpenScience                 Earn Your Open Science Digital Badge Open Science 101 is a free self-paced public training to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to navigate the principles and practices of open science. Scheduled instructor-led virtual training is available, including training in Spanish.                   Worldview Images of the Week           Intense Hurricanes Hit Mexico and Florida Hurricanes struck western Mexico (Hurricane John) and western Florida (Hurricane Helene) in late-September. This false-color image shows the powerful storms on September 26 just before each made landfall.           Three Major Fires Near Los Angeles The Bridge, Line, and Airport Fires were all burning within 50 miles of each other east of Los Angeles in early September. Dense smoke from these fires impacted visibility and air quality throughout the region.           Fires in Northern Portugal While central Europe was dealing with flooding, hot and dry conditions led to more than 100 wildfires in northern Portugal. More than 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) burned and a combined 13 kilometers (8 miles) of fire fronts were detected, according to the European Copernicus satellite service.                 NASA's Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program oversees the life cycle of NASA’s Earth science data and seeks to maximize the scientific return from missions and experiments.
