AHEPA Demands Global Release of 'Famagusta' on Netflix

Upon news of reports citing Turkish Radio and TV Supreme Council's (RTUK) announcement that popular streaming platform Netflix will no longer be broadcasting "Famagusta," outside of Greece, due to pressure applied by RTUK, Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos has taken action.

Greek-Cypriot co-production "Famagusta" recounts the story of the 1974 invasion of Cyprus, an event that still deeply affects millions of Cypriots today. However, following lobbying efforts from RTUK, Netflix has made the decision to limit the series to air only in Greece, thereby silencing this vital chapter of history for global audiences.

In a letter to Netflix CEO and Greek-American Ted Sarandos, Tsivicos expresses disappointment in Netflix cowering to RTUK's demands to prohibit "Famagusta" from being viewed by a global audience, and points out what a detriment they are doing to the remembrance of Turkey's brutal invasion of the Republic of Cyprus.

Tsivicos Makes Rounds in Greece

Supreme President Tsivicos, while visiting the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, had the opportunity to briefly meet and discuss upcoming events with Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The Order of AHEPA has been lucky to work side-by-side with the government of Greece on many issues in the past and looks forward to continuing this relationship. The Supreme President and Prime Minister visited the fair's booth being hosted by AHEPA District 25 and thanked our Brothers in attendance for their service and efforts.

Later in the week, the Supreme President visited the brothers of Peter Baltis Chapter HJ-26 in Larissa, Greece. They met at the headquarters of the First Army of Greece and met with the current General, the Mayor of Larissa, Athanasios Mamakos, and the Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas.

An AHEPA meeting followed in which the Supreme President swore in new brothers and installed Chapter officers. The day ended with a wonderful dinner with the traditional area Tsipouro hosted by the Governor of Thessaly!

The Supreme President is thankful for the opportunity to visit chapters in Greece and is looking forward to returning to the US to continue visitations stateside!

AHEPA Family Remembers 9/11

Light Towers.jpg

WASHINGTON, DC - Statement by Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos on the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks:

"On the solemn 23rd anniversary of September 11th, we remember all the people, including 39 Greek Americans, who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States. We will never forget their sacrifice and our thoughts and prayers will always be with them and their families. May their memories be eternal.

"In times of tragedy, there are always individuals, whether they are emergency first responders or ordinary, everyday civilians, who are the first to respond. We salute and are forever grateful for their brave acts of heroism on that fateful day.

"We witnessed the glorious resurrection of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center. The Shrine will be a beacon for peace and a harbor for reflection for all. The AHEPA family proudly contributed to the worthy endeavor to rebuild Saint Nicholas.

"Additionally, today is a National Day of Service and Remembrance. AHEPA encourages the community to not only remember the victims of September 11, but also to honor their memories by participating in acts of service to help strengthen our cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Service is our essence and many of our communities are in need. Together, we can all play an important role and provide a positive impact through volunteerism in support of service initiatives and in remembrance of September 11.”
