Foreword |
 | | Dear readers, | The heart of the summer is here. As temperatures rise and many make the most of the season by flocking down to the shores, we take a look at marine heatwaves. With the last episode of the Ocean Calls podcast, learn all about the phenomenon, and complete it with our map of the month from the European Atlas of the Sea. On the innovation and entrepreneurship front, great news, with a very successful second edition of BlueInvest Africa, and the announcement that the European Commission will invest €126.9 million in 26 new projects to contribute to the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’. Warm regards,
Kestutis SADAUSKAS, Deputy Director-General Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries

Map of the month |
 | Global sea surface temperature regional trend | Jellyfish numbers are increasing worldwide for several reasons. These include overfishing of their predators, declining populations of other fish that compete with jellyfish for food, warmer ocean temperatures that help jellyfish thrive, and pollution from fertilizers that boost plankton growth, a key part of jellyfish diets. Check out the map to see how sea surface temperatures have changed globally over 25 years (data provided by the Copernicus Marine Service). | |

 | Ocean Calls Podcast – Season 3 Ep. 8: What are the long-term impacts of marine heatwaves? | As the world heats up, the oceans do, too. In this episode of Ocean Calls, we are looking at the damaging, long-term effects of marine heatwaves. We delve into their impacts on corals and fish, and discuss what can be done to help ecosystems to better weather the storm. | |
