WEB SURVEY

2024 European Web Survey on Drugs

Do you use drugs? How many? Why? These are among the questions posed in the latest EMCDDA European Web Survey on Drugs, launched on 21 May. Targeted at people, aged 18 and over who have used drugs, the survey aims to improve understanding of patterns of drug use in Europe and help shape future drug policies and interventions. This year, the survey will run in 36 countries in around 30 languages. As in previous years, it will be promoted nationally by the Reitox national focal points and their partners, as well as through targeted social media advertisements.

EUROPEAN DRUG REPORT 2024

Save the date: 11 June

How is Europe's opioid market evolving? What substances are causing the most concern today? How are countries responding to cannabis use? Find out more when the EMCDDA launches its European Drug Report 2024: Trends and Developments in a live online press conference on 11 June. Based on data from 29 countries (EU-27, Türkiye and Norway), the report delivers the latest overview of the drug situation in Europe, exploring long-term trends and emerging threats. The comprehensive analysis covers drug use and supply as well as drug-related harms and responses to them.

GOVERNANCE

General Report of Activities 2023

This month, the EMCDDA published its General Report of Activities 2023  Key achievements and governance: a year in review. 'No previous year has bridged the future and the past more significantly than 2023 has done', states the report. In February, the EMCDDA commemorated 30 years since its creation. In July, new legislation entered into force, setting the agency on a one-year transition course to becoming the new European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) on 2 July 2024. Overall, the EMCDDA's activities in 2023 demonstrated its commitment to providing valuable information, analysis and training in the field of drugs and drug addiction and to contributing to drug policy and practice across Europe and beyond.

New report unveils dynamics of illicit drug market

In a new report out on 30 May, EU Drug Market: Drivers and facilitators, the EMCDDA and Europol provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of drug production, trafficking and distribution. The report is a key element in the EU Drug Markets: In-depth analysis from the two agencies, their fourth comprehensive overview of illicit drug markets in the EU. The analysis focuses on three market drivers: globalisation, technology and innovation, and criminal tools.

Upcoming webinar on healthy nightlife

Music festivals are common in Europe over the summer months and attract high numbers of participants, especially young people. With summer just around the corner, the next EMCDDA webinar will focus on safe festivals and healthy nightlife. Professionals from different festivals/countries across Europe will discuss their experiences, challenges and strategies to reduce risks and improve safety at these events. The EMCDDA’s approach to fostering safe festivals and healthy nightlife is to prevent risky behaviours by raising awareness on harm-reduction interventions.

INTERNATIONAL 

Working Arrangement with Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law

This month, EMCDDA Director Alexis Goosdeel made an official visit to Colombia to sign the agency's Working Arrangement with the Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law. The bilateral agreement reflects the willingness and commitment from both sides to join forces for mutual benefit. During the visit, the EMCDDA delegation met representatives from the Ministry, along with Colombian authorities and other key stakeholders, to further discuss areas for strengthening dialogue and cooperation. The new accord will provide both parties with valuable new insights into current and future drug problems and will contribute to ongoing strategic goals.

Bursaries for international cooperation partners

The EMCDDA is offering bursaries for Lisbon Addictions 2024 via its EU-funded international cooperation projects. Professionals, academics and experts from the Candidate and Potential candidates to the EU, European Neighbourhood Policy area beneficiaries, Latin America and the Caribbean are eligible to apply. The bursaries will cover the registration fee to the conference, a round trip to Lisbon and pre-paid accommodation.

EUPC training courses

This month, the EMCDDA held a European Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) training course in Tunis, Tunisia, financed under the EU4Monitoring Drugs II project (EU4MD II). The course was delivered in cooperation with the National Narcotics Office at the Ministry of Public Health and the Tunisian National Institute of Public Health. Read more >>

Also this month, the EMCDDA delivered the very first EUPC training course in Switzerland. The course, held in Bern, was organised in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Health (BAG) and the Swiss Tobacco Prevention Fund. The 15 participants were German-speaking cantonal and federal representatives. Read more >>

More of our European miniguides on responding to drug problems have now been translated. Three are now available in Bulgarian, German, Spanish and French.

Seconded national expert on law enforcement

📢 We are looking for a seconded national expert on law enforcement to work in the area of drug supply and drug supply reduction. 

The successful candidate will have expert knowledge on drug markets, an awareness of data-collection methods, as well as knowledge of international drug issues and the functioning of the EU institutions.

Have you registered? 

The next European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (Lisbon Addictions 2024) will take place in Lisbon from 23–25 October 2024. The conference, now in its 5th edition, is intended to inform policy development and practice through a better understanding of contemporary issues in addiction science. The overarching theme of the event is 'Empowering the workforce of the future'.
