Invitation Ensuring Roma political participation at local, national and European level: identifying obstacles, solutions and good practices 14/03/2024 | 09:30 – 13:00 | Hybrid public hearing | EESC

The EESC's Permanent Group on Inclusion of the Roma is organising a hybrid public hearing on "Ensuring Roma political participation at local, national and European level: identifying obstacles, solutions and good practices" on 14 March 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Encouraging the Roma community's participation in political life at local, national and European level is one of the objectives of the EU Roma strategic framework 2020-2030. At an estimated 10-12 million, the Roma community constitutes the largest minority in Europe. Yet, in many countries the Roma are not part of the decision-making process, finding themselves in some cases deliberately excluded, intimidated or prevented from representing their rights and needs. Lack of information on the electoral processes itself, together with the vulnerability and difficulties presented by their segregated and poor living conditions, can also impact their possibilities for proper participation in the political scenario. The hearing will explore further the reasons behind the Roma's lack of participation in the political sphere, look into best practices and discuss possible actions that can help increase their participation. Le groupe permanent du CESE sur l'intégration des Roms organise une audition publique hybride sur le thème "Assurer la participation politique des Roms au niveau local, national et européen: identifier les obstacles, les solutions et les bonnes pratiques" le 14 mars 2024 de 9h30 à 13h00. Encourager la participation de la communauté rom à la vie politique aux niveaux local, national et européen est l'un des objectifs du cadre stratégique de l'UE pour les Roms 2020-2030. Avec environ 10 à 12 millions de personnes, la communauté rom constitue la plus grande minorité d'Europe. Pourtant, dans de nombreux pays, les Roms ne participent pas au processus de prise de décision et se retrouvent dans certains cas délibérément exclus, intimidés ou empêchés de défendre leurs droits et leurs besoins. Le manque d’informations sur les processus électoraux, ainsi que la vulnérabilité et les difficultés que présentent leurs conditions de vie ségréguées et médiocres, peuvent également avoir un impact sur leurs possibilités de participation adéquate à la scène politique. L'audition explorera davantage les raisons qui expliquent le manque de participation des Roms à la sphère politique, examinera les meilleures pratiques et discutera des actions possibles qui peuvent contribuer à accroître leur participation.
