FASHION SUPPLY CHAIN AND INDIA: Case Study

India alone produces 25% of the world’s cotton, sustaining the livelihoods of 5.8 million farmers, the majority of whom are small-scale farmers cultivating land less than 2 hectares in size. In India’s textile industry, nearly 60% of all raw materials are made up of cotton. The textile industry also makes up about 7% of the industrial output and contributes about 12% to the country’s export earnings (Fashion Revolution, 2023, online). Cotton, often referred to as "white gold," serves as a fundamental raw material for India's vibrant textile and garment industry.
However, growing cotton on such a large scale and for such a cheap price is bringing several challenges and negative consequences on both farmers and their environments. Many farmers find themselves trapped in a cycle of debt due to factors beyond their control such as an increase of unpredictable weather patterns. When crops fail, debts accumulate, leading to financial ruin and a sense of hopelessness. More than 250,000 cotton farmer suicides have been recorded in India over the last 16 years in the largest wave of suicides in history (Fairtrade, 2023, online). Pest infestations, particularly by the pink bollworm, pose a persistent threat to cotton crops in India. These pests damage the cotton fibres, leading to reduced yields and lower-quality cotton. Using pesticides pollutes the soil and consequently pollutes the natural water systems but also makes the soil less fertile for future cultivation . Cotton demands substantial water resources, making it vulnerable to water scarcity, a challenge amplified by erratic rainfall patterns due to climate change. Cotton farming also requires intensive manual labour, especially during critical phases like planting and harvesting. However, salaries below living minimum wage discourages the workforce, leading to reduced productivity and perpetuating economic inequalities (EMAF, 2023).
