Sweden gives SEK 15 million to help developing economies deepen their trade know-how

Sweden is contributing SEK 15 million (about CHF 1.2 million) in 2023 to finance the participation of government officials from developing and least-developed economies (LDCs) in training and other trade capacity-building activities delivered by the WTO. This donation to the WTO’s Global Trust Fund will help these countries broaden their expertise in WTO matters as well as their ability to negotiate trade rules.

Goods barometer signals upturn in trade backed by strong auto demand

Global goods trade showed signs of a turnaround in the second quarter of 2023, driven by strong automobile production and sales, but further upward momentum in Q3 and beyond may be limited as long as export orders remain weak, according to the latest WTO Goods Trade Barometer issued on 24 August.

Hong Kong, China formally accepts Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies
Hong Kong, China deposited its instrument of acceptance of the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies on 21 August. Ms Drew Lai, Acting Permanent Representative, presented Hong Kong, China’s instrument of acceptance to Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Ukraine formally accepts Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies
Ukraine formally deposited its instrument of acceptance for the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies on 17 August. Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, WTO Director-General, received Ukraine’s instrument during her visit to Kyiv from the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Indonesia initiates WTO dispute complaint regarding EU duties on biodiesel imports
Indonesia has requested WTO dispute consultations with the European Union regarding the EU’s imposition of countervailing duties on imports of biodiesel from Indonesia. The request was circulated to WTO members on 15 August.
