E-commerce negotiations maintain positive momentum, focus on key issues
Participants in the negotiations on e-commerce discussed key issues such as data flow, data localisation and development at their 22-25 May meetings. The co-convenors (Australia, Japan and Singapore) urged members to step up the work of the small groups between now and the summer break in order to achieve as much convergence as possible.

Germany commits EUR 150,000 to boost safe food exports from developing countries
Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture is contributing EUR 150,000 (approximately CHF 146,000) to the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) to help developing and least developed countries (LDCs) meet international food safety, animal and plant health standards for trade. The contribution was confirmed on 23 May at a signing ceremony attended by Ambassador Bettina Waldmann of Germany and the WTO’s Director of Administration and General Services, Nthisana Phillips.

Media are welcome to join the WTO Trade Dialogue on Food titled “The Black Sea Grain Initiative”, which will be livestreamed on the WTO YouTube channel on 1 June, 14:00-15:30 (CET)The event will feature Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and distinguished speakers from the United Nations and other international organizations, discussing the latest developments of the Black Sea Grain Deal and the issue of food security.

The UN-brokered Black Sea Grain Initiative was established in July 2022 and was recently renewed in mid-May. In its first two terms, this initiative facilitated the transportation of approximately 25 million metric tonnes of grain and food products from Russia and Ukraine to 45 countries, bringing down global food prices and stabilizing the markets. What lies ahead for the future of this deal?

International organizations launch platform to promote access to subsidy information
The heads of the IMF, OECD, World Bank and the WTO today (25 May) announced the launch of a Joint Subsidy Platform (JSP) at www.subsidydata.org to enhance transparency on the use of subsidies. The JSP is intended to facilitate access to information on the nature, size and economic impact of subsidies, with a view to facilitating dialogue on their appropriate use and design.

Argentina initiates WTO dispute complaint regarding US measures on certain tubular goods
Argentina has requested WTO dispute consultations with the United States regarding certain US anti-dumping measures on oil country tubular goods (OCTG) from Argentina as well as Section 771(7)(G) of the US Tariff Act of 1930. The request was circulated to WTO members on 25 May.

DDG Ellard highlights importance of Fisheries Subsidies Agreement at workshop in Malaysia
At the WTO regional workshop on fisheries subsidies held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 23-25 May, Deputy Director-General Angela Ellard underlined the importance of the new WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement for Asia. She urged governments in the region to secure acceptance of the Agreement as soon as possible so that it can contribute to a healthy ocean ecosystem.

DG Okonjo-Iweala praises Viet Nam for using trade to drive growth and reduce poverty
Viet Nam is an example of how global trade can be used to drive economic development and expand opportunities for people, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stated in an address to the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi on 18 May. The Director-General also encouraged the Vietnamese government to ratify the WTO’s Fisheries Subsidies Agreement as soon as possible to accelerate its entry into force and to support ocean sustainability. During her visit to Hanoi, she also met with Viet Nam’s Prime Minister, Minh Chinh, and other senior officials.
