Secretary General: “Luxembourg is at the forefront of NATO’s innovation agenda”

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Prime Minister Xavier Bettel to NATO Headquarters on 27 April 2023, praising Luxembourg for its role “at the forefront of NATO’s innovation agenda, leading our work on space surveillance and investing in critical satellite capabilities.” Mr Stoltenberg also thanked the Prime Minister for Luxembourg’s contribution to NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Romania, and for the country’s strong support to the Alliance’s climate change and security agenda.

France wraps up its biggest exercise in decades alongside NATO Allies

France has just concluded its biggest military exercise in decades. The fourth phase of Exercise Orion 23 involved 12,000 personnel and assets from several NATO Allies, including Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. 

The exercise, conducted over several months, concluded its fourth and last phase on 5 May 2023. The drills focused on improving NATO forces’ readiness through joint training on land and in the skies. Troops from Allied countries exercised different scenarios, including simulated urban combat, operational planning, logistical support, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) defence capabilities, medical evacuation and air mobility.

Back to the future: innovating in times of uncertainty and disruption

How do innovators get better at anticipating and preparing for problems in the future? Most innovation efforts focus on problems in the present — ones that are easy to identify and thus to justify investing in (e.g. how do we make an airplane fly higher, or faster, or with fewer carbon emissions?) But focusing on the present can leave us unprepared for problems that may come in the future. It is equally valuable for innovation efforts to look beyond the present and to prepare for disruptions yet to come.
