9 May is a special day in the European calendar.

It is a day for promoting solidarity and peace. A day for hope. A day when Europe sought to end the cycle of suspicion and war, and secure long-term peace on the continent. 9 May is not just any day. It is Europe day!

Europe Day commemorates the date French foreign minister and visionary Robert Schuman presented the Schuman Declaration, on 9 May 1950. This ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe laid the early foundations for what is now the European Union.

Schuman’s plan aimed to render war "not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible." It proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, whose members would pool coal and steel production.

"The pooling of coal and steel production... will change the destinies of those regions which have long been devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most constant victims."

To help you gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the Schuman Declaration, and the role of Robert Schuman, the Council Library has compiled a special library guide for the day filled with reading suggestions, books, articles, EU Publications, journals, databases and much more.

And if you would like to learn more about Europe Day, the Council has a dedicated page with lots of information.

Whether you are in the EU, or further afield, a happy Europe Day to all from the Council Library!
