Goods barometer sinks below trend as global import demand weakens
Trade growth is likely to slow in the closing months of 2022 and into 2023, according to the latest WTO Goods Trade Barometer released on 28 November, as the global economy continues to be buffeted by strong headwinds. The current reading of 96.2 is below both the baseline value for the index and the previous reading of 100.0, reflecting cooling demand for traded goods.

Australia pledges AUD 2 million to WTO Fisheries Funding Mechanism
The Government of Australia has pledged AUD 2 million (approximately CHF 1.3 million) to the WTO Fisheries Funding Mechanism to help developing and least-developed countries implement the landmark Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies adopted at the 12th Ministerial Conference in June. The contribution was announced at a 22 November meeting in Canberra, Australia, between WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator the Hon Murray Watt and Assistant Minister for Trade, Senator the Hon Tim Ayres.

Goods Council discusses high number of trade concerns, MC12 implementation, LDC graduation
At a meeting of the Council for Trade in Goods on 24-25 November, WTO members addressed a record number of trade concerns touching on a wide range of trade measures and economic sectors. Members also discussed how the Council should move forward in implementing some of the outcomes of the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) and continued discussions on the Least-Developed Countries (LDC) Group’s proposal concerning countries graduating from LDC status.
