Market of the Month, Australia

Australia’s aerospace and defense industries include niche manufacturing sectors augmented by a much larger service sector engaged in passenger and cargo transportation, national security, search and rescue, industry-based aviation, infrastructure, maintenance, repair and overhaul. However the national economy is of a First World, affluent nature with commensurate expectations and so Australia is a substantial importer of both civil and defense systems. It is a top 4 importer of defense systems/arms and a top 20 importer of civil aircraft, with national policy initiatives in play to grow both the local defense industry – notably in terms of naval shipbuilding and weapons manufacture – and its space industry.

Estimates vary, especially as civil aerospace recovers from the decline in commercial aviation 2019-2021, but civil aerospace had an estimated annual revenue of close to USD 20 Billion in 2019-2020; defense spending was of the order of USD 32 Billion in 2021, including USD 20 Billion almost evenly split between acquisition and sustainment. The space industry had an estimated turnover of about USD 2.5 Billion. Exports are comparatively small but targeted for substantial growth.

The U.S. has a long history of trade, investment and defense cooperation with Australia; the ANZUS Treaty dating from 1951; a Free Trade Treaty (AUSFTA) dating from 2005; and a substantial trade and investment partnership ranking it as Australia’s major economic partner.

  • Defense
Australia spends a little over 2 per cent of its GDP on defense, equating to approx. USD 32 Billion in 2021, ranking 11th (IISS) or 12th (SIPRI) worldwide ie approx. the same as Italy. It is a major importer with the U.S. by far its largest supplier.

  • Space
As of 2017 the Australian space industry was estimated to employ around 10,000 FTE (full time equivalents) and generate USD 2-3 Billion in annual revenue. The ASA was expected to help facilitate a tripling of the Australian space economy and creation of a further 20,000 new jobs by 2030.

  • Civil Aviation
Australia’s civil aviation industry is one of the world’s oldest, with national carrier QANTAS celebrating its 100th birthday in 2021. Together with Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex and various smaller regional airlines, Australia had over 550 aircraft being flown by commercial airlines prior to covid-19 disruption to air travel in 2020. More...
  • Business Aviation
Australia also has the 2nd largest business aviation fleet in Asia (China 340, Australia 209). Textron Aviation, Gulfstream Aerospace and Bombardier are forecast to deliver most future aircraft into the Asia region, with deliveries worth an estimated $18.3 billion at list prices over the next decade.

  • Civil (turbine) Helicopters
Australia also has the largest civil (turbine) helicopter fleet in Asia (Australia 908, China 766) and recorded the greatest net growth (32). McDermott Aviation is the largest operator (39) followed by Babcock (33) and Heli West (26).

Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF)

The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) was launched in May 2022, with a dozen partners, including Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Together these partners represent 40 percent of the world’s GDP.

IPEF will enable the United States and our allies to decide on rules of the road that ensure American workers, small businesses, and ranchers can compete in the Indo-Pacific. In addition, the framework will help lower costs by making our supply chains more resilient in the long term, protecting us against costly disruptions that lead to higher prices for consumers.

In July, over 100 delegates and 65 virtual delegates met in Singapore for the first meeting of IPEF Senior Officials and experts to discuss the four pillars of IPEF: Connected Economy, Resilient Economy, Clean Economy, and Fair Economy. These four pillars will establish high-standard commitments that will deepen our economic engagement in the region.

For more information see the White House Fact Sheet on IPEF.

Executive-Led Aerospace & Defense Trade Mission to the Middle East
Israel, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain

November 6-11, 2022

The United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration (ITA), is organizing an Aerospace and Defense Trade Mission to the Middle East on November 6-11, 2022. This mission will be led by Arun Venkataraman, Assistant Secretary for Global Markets. The purpose of the mission is to introduce U.S. companies to the aerospace and defense ecosystem in key Middle Eastern countries, and assist delegate companies with finding business partners and exporting their products and services to the region.

Mission delegates will have access to business development opportunities across Israel, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Participating firms will gain market insight, make industry contacts, solidify business strategies, and advance specific projects, with the goal of increasing U.S. exports of products and services in the aerospace and defense sectors. The subsectors will depend on the nature of the market, potential demand, prospective government procurements, and other factors closer to the start of recruitment.

The mission will include customized one-on-one business appointments with pre-screened potential buyers, agents, distributors, and joint venture partners. It will also include meetings with central, state, and local government officials and industry leaders, as well as networking events.
