Is difficult to imagine a more pressing geopolitical topic than Energy Sufficiency as the Russian-Ukrainian war approaches its 215th day with no peace agreement in sight and with European winter fast approaching. Member States, large enterprises and EU citizens are all caught in the compelling issue of rising energy prices and although the European Union is in the process of outlining common and unified responses, in the past months Member States have also been exploring bilateral agreements. To get a full understanding of the issue at stake, don’t miss this new NEU number.

Energy poverty of migrants

The more than 215-day-long war in Ukraine has created tectonic shifts in the energy supply sector, raising prices and raising concerns about what will transpire in the EU member states this winter in this regard. The agreed definition of energy poverty is that it occurs when there are insufficient opportunities for a home to provide the essential amount of energy for a healthy and dignified life without endangering other fundamental needs of the household or the larger society.

EU cutting ties with Russia on energy

The European Union is moving ahead with plans to diversify away from its dependence on Russian oil and gas. “At the beginning of the war, Europe was heavily dependent on Russian fossil fuels: coal, oil, gas. 60% of the Russian budgets' revenues at that time was from fossil fuels”, recently said Eu Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at Princeton University. Von der Leyen highlighted on the other hand that the war in Ukraine was a turning point, “because we have decided” that “we will end our reliance on Russian fossil fuels”.

Winter is coming: the energy security of the European Union and its Member States

By bringing the war back to Europe, the Russian invasion of Ukraine highlighted the need for energy security and the continent's reliance on Russian fossil fuels. In response to the United States' ban on Russian oil imports on March 8 and the European Commission's presentation of a plan to reduce the European Union's dependency on Russian fossil fuels in the coming years, oil and gas prices reached multi-year highs in 2022. This article presents how some of the EU Member States are responding to crisis and what are the prospects for this winter’s season.

2022 CEF Transport Call

On 13 September, 9 calls for proposals were launched for a total of 41 topics for projects aimed at supporting new enhanced and improved European transport infrastructure under the Connecting Europe Facility – Transport sector, which supports projects improving multimodality and infrastructure and promoting innovation and new technologies.
