EU cutting ties with Russia on energy The European Union is moving ahead with plans to diversify away from its dependence on Russian oil and gas. “At the beginning of the war, Europe was heavily dependent on Russian fossil fuels: coal, oil, gas. 60% of the Russian budgets' revenues at that time was from fossil fuels”, recently said Eu Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at Princeton University. Von der Leyen highlighted on the other hand that the war in Ukraine was a turning point, “because we have decided” that “we will end our reliance on Russian fossil fuels”. Winter is coming: the energy security of the European Union and its Member States By bringing the war back to Europe, the Russian invasion of Ukraine highlighted the need for energy security and the continent's reliance on Russian fossil fuels. In response to the United States' ban on Russian oil imports on March 8 and the European Commission's presentation of a plan to reduce the European Union's dependency on Russian fossil fuels in the coming years, oil and gas prices reached multi-year highs in 2022.
