Rain on the range – Getting muddy with NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Romania

Earlier this year, Allies agreed to enhance NATO’s presence in the east of the Alliance by establishing four new multinational battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia (in addition to the existing battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, which have been in place since 2017). Now, Allied troops are training together in these new battlegroups, demonstrating their ability and commitment to working together – come rain or come shine.

Romania’s Special Operations Forces in action

While few in numbers, these commandos are capable of carrying out raids by air, land and sea, using their skills and stealth to take their adversaries by surprise. The Romanian Special Operations Forces have been working with NATO since 2003, already before Romania joined the Alliance in March 2004. Over the years, the Romanian elite forces’ unit has been deployed to NATO missions in Afghanistan and in Kosovo alongside Allies and partner countries.

More recently, the Romanian operators are busy keeping themselves on the bleeding edge of tactical proficiency. They frequently participate in exercises with their NATO Allies, allowing them to exchange tactics with their counterparts from different countries. In this video, we see Romanian commandos in action. Should NATO call upon them, Romania’s elite forces will be ready to perform any high-risk mission.

B-52 bombers conclude month-long deployment

US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers recently concluded a month-long deployment to the United Kingdom as part of Bomber Task Force Europe.

The bombers, part of the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, left their forward deployed base at Royal Air Force Fairford and returned to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota on 21 September. They were the second Task Force of B-52s to visit Europe in 2022, following an earlier deployment that ended in April.

Bomber Task Force Europe is a standing mission intended to help US Air Force pilots and crews familiarise themselves with European airspace and Allies. Flying from Fairford but conducting missions all over the continent, the B-52s are able to fly long-endurance missions and carry a wide spectrum of precision ordnance, both conventional and strategic, making them a powerful long-range deterrent.

Statement by the North Atlantic Council on the so-called “referenda” in parts of Ukraine

Issued on 22 September 2022

  1. We condemn in the strongest possible terms the plan to hold so-called “referenda” on joining the Russian Federation in the Ukrainian regions partly controlled by the Russian military. As the UN General Assembly reaffirmed in its resolution “Aggression against Ukraine” adopted on 2 March 2022, no territorial acquisition resulting from the threat or use of force shall be recognized as legal. Allies do not and will never recognize Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea.  Sham referenda in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions of Ukraine have no legitimacy and will be a blatant violation of the UN Charter.  NATO Allies will not recognize their illegal and illegitimate annexation.  These lands are Ukraine.  We call on all states to reject Russia’s blatant attempts at territorial conquest.

  2. These Russian decisions, including on a partial military mobilisation, are a further escalation in Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine. We continue to reject Russia’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. Russia bears full responsibility for the war, the immense suffering its aggression is bringing upon the Ukrainian people, as well as the cost of its war including for the Russian people now being mobilised. Russia has it in its hands to end the conflict. Russia must immediately stop this war and withdraw from Ukraine.

  3. We reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, and for Ukraine’s inherent right to self-defence. NATO Allies remain resolute in providing political and practical support to Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s aggression.

  4. NATO is a defensive Alliance and will continue to strive for peace, security, and stability in the whole of the Euro-Atlantic area. We stand united to defend and protect every inch of Allied territory.
