AHEPA Attends Events during UN General Assembly Week

The AHEPA family's national leadership participated at events held on the sidelines of the 77th United National General Assembly last week in New York City.


AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope were represented at a luncheon held in honor of Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Mrs. Mareva Grabowski Mitsotaki, on Sept. 21.



Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas, DOP Grand President Georgette Boulegeris, Board of Trustees Chairman Nicholas Karacostas, PSP; Board of Trustees Vice Chair George Horiates, PSP; Supreme Governor Region 3 Theodore Stamas, Executive Director Basil Mossaidis and DOP Executive Director Elena Saviolakis attended the luncheon.


In addition, AHEPA family officers attended the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations' annual dinner held Sept. 23. President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades addressed the audience.

Ohio Ahepans Honor Governor DeWine

Buckeye District 11 Ahepans, led by Past Supreme President Carl Hollister, honored Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) with the district's Cleisthenes Award, Sept. 21, 2022. 


Hollister and District 11 Governor John Karipides presented the award, which is bestowed to an Ahepan for a lifetime of work in service and leadership.  Governor DeWine is a member Chapter 139, Columbus, Ohio.


Cleisthenes, an Athenian statesman, is regarded as the founder of Athenian democracy.

A bust of Cleisthenes is found in the Ohio House and Senate chambers thanks to the work of Ohio Ahepans, such as Brother Aristotle Hutras.

Former NJ Governor, U.S. Rep. Ahepan Florio Passes Away

AHEPA is saddened with news of the passing of former New Jersey Governor and former U.S. Representative James Florio (D). He passed away Sept. 25, 2022.


Florio held membership in AHEPA Camden Chapter 69, Cherry Hill, N.J. 


Florio served four years as governor of New Jersey and 15 years as a U.S. representative. In 1985, as chair of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Trade and

Tourism, he traveled on a mission to Greece and Cyprus, accompanied by Ahepans. He also championed Greece and Cyprus in his congressional actions and speeches.


As governor, Florio annually invited the AHEPA District 5 Lodge to the State Capitol for Greek Independence Day.
