New report highlights positive impact of WTO technical assistance activities

The WTO Technical Assistance Annual Report, published on 2 June, outlines how the WTO Secretariat delivered training activities to developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) and observer governments in 2021 despite the constraints posed by COVID-19. Beneficiaries were able to improve their understanding of WTO activities, the report notes, and to play a more effective role in the multilateral trading system.

WTO-World Bank publication stresses key role of trade in responding to health crises

Trade plays a critical role in ensuring access to medical goods and services during global health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the key findings from a new WTO-World Bank publication launched by the WTO Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the World Bank Managing Director Mari Pangestu at an online event on 3 June. In her opening remarks, DG Okonjo-Iweala underlined the need for greater international cooperation to improve global health security.

DG Okonjo-Iweala: Time for members to show restraint and agree on texts for MC12

At an agriculture negotiating meeting for delegation heads on 1-2 June, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the chair of the agriculture negotiations, Ambassador Gloria Abraham Peralta (Costa Rica), heard members’ feedback on three draft texts that emerged from an informal consultation process which the DG has led since early May. With the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) fast approaching, the DG urged members to restrain their comments to the extent possible so that “simple, short, beautiful and balanced” texts could be sent for ministers’ consideration.

WTO members discuss key findings of Aid for Trade Monitoring and Evaluation Exercise

WTO members and Aid for Trade partner organizations discussed at a workshop on 31 May the key findings of the Aid for Trade Monitoring and Evaluation Exercise ahead of the 2022 Aid for Trade Global Review to take place in late July. The workshop also presented the latest data on Aid-for-Trade financing.

High-level event kicks off Cameroon University’s activities under WTO Chairs Programme

At a high-level event on 25 May 2022, the Université de Yaoundé II (UDY) in Cameroon launched its activities under the WTO Chairs Programme (WCP). Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang, senior officials from the government of Cameroon, trade officials in Geneva and representatives from partner organizations attended the meeting. UDY is one of 17 academic institutions selected by Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in late 2021 to join the Chairs network.
